BBC Strictly Come Dancing legend's heartbreaking admission after being dropped from show
Strictly Come Dancing icon Dame Arlene Phillips made a heartbreaking admission after being dropped from the hit BBC show. Arlene, 82, was cut from the show ahead of the 2009 series.
Her departure ignited a debate on ageism as she was replaced by the much younger Alesha Dixon, who was 30 at the time. Despite her extensive experience in dance and choreography, Arlene learned of her axing via the radio, reports The Mirror.
She recounted the moment as her "biggest disappointment". In an interview with The Sunday Times, she explained: "I loved my time on Strictly and it was tough when I left, but I got up and carried on with life."
Arlene also disclosed that she "kicked, screamed and sobbed" upon learning she would no longer be part of the show she had served since 2004.
At the time, it was rumoured that Arlene had been dropped from the show for being "too old". Particularly as her replacement, Alesha, had no experience judging a dancing show, but had previously lifted the Glitterball Trophy.

And Arlene says she wishes she had "asked the right questions" after BBC bosses made the decisions. She said: "I was very fragile because I had a bereavement the day before [her manager died].
She lamented not getting clear answers and being strung along with the prospect of an expanded judging panel: "I wanted to know in detail and I wanted to know the real reason at the point when they decided for me to go, yet they kept me hanging on for so long with the possibility that there would be five judges."
At the time, BBC One boss Jay Hunt refuted claims that Arlene's age played a part in her departure from the show. He remarked: "We wanted to refresh the format, it's about ensuring the show remains as compelling for viewers as it always has been. It was not an easy decision.
"We looked at the panel - Bruno is the joker, Craig is the Simon Cowell, Len is the head judge. It was obvious she was the one to change."

He further commented: "Strictly is an entertainment show. As a former champion, Alesha knows exactly what it takes to win. Her eye for great performance and her charisma and charm make Alesha a great addition to the panel."
Alesha Dixon stayed with the show for three series before she announced she would be leaving. She then became a judge on Britain's Got Talent.
In a poignant revelation to The Guardian's Cutting magazine, Arlene disclosed the most important lesson life has taught her: "Life is never fair."
Post-Strictly, Arlene led the BBC's So You Think You Can Dance?, a Pop Idol-style contest, and appeared on I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!. In 2022, she served as a guest judge on Dancing on Ice and last October, she took on the role of executive producer for Toys the Musical.

Harry Hill wants TV Burp to return - but with one major change
Harry Hill wants TV Burp to return - but with one major change The 60-year-old comedian fronted the ITV comedy clip series - which saw Harry make jokes relating to the previous week's hottest TV shows, with episodes also featuring sketches and parodied scenes - from 2001 until it ended in 2012 (Image: BBC ) Harry Hill wants TV Burp to come back – but with a new presenter. The 60-year-old comedian fronted the ITV comedy clip series - which saw Harry make jokes relating to the previous week's hottest TV shows, with episodes also featuring sketches and parodied scenes - from 2001 until it ended in 2012. And whilst Harry thinks he would not succeed in re-creating the award-winning show, the star is open for someone to replace him in reviving the programme. In an interview with the new issue of Radio Times magazine, he said: "I don't have any plans [to bring back Harry Hill's TV Burp]. "These things are best left undone. We did all the jokes. Trying to re-create that, I'd be on a hiding to nothing, but I'd love someone else to do it. "There's a space for that sort of show and I'm surprised no one's filled it." Article continues below The Knitted Character was a recurring character in many series of Harry Hill's TV Burp until it was replaced with Mr. Fluffy in series 11. And Harry said the Knitted Character does not want the "weekly stress" of the show either if it came back. Speaking about the Knitted Character - who appears in Harry's new live show New Bits and Greatest Hits - he said: "He's in my live show. He comes on at the end as part of the badger parade, riding on the back of a heron. "Blink and you'll miss him because he's only tiny, but he's still working. "Knitted Character is older and wiser now. He doesn't necessarily want the stress of a weekly show, either." The comic - who married artist Magda Archer in 1996 - binged-watched property shows, such as Homes Under the Hammer and EastEnders, for Harry Hill's TV Burp, and now he gets annoyed by them if he tries to tune in. He quipped: "I used to watch them all for TV Burp, so they're a bit triggering, which is unfortunate because they're the only shows my wife watches." Harry - whose real name is Matthew Hall - said the sketch comedy series Monty Python's Flying Circus is what inspired him as a child to become a comedian. He explained: "Brucey [Forsyth], Eric [Morecambe] and Ernie [Wise] and The Two Ronnies [Ronnie Barker and Ronnie Corbett] were big in our house, but what really got me was Monty Python's Flying Circus. Article continues below "The problem was, my dad decided what was on, and at 9pm, he wanted to watch the news on BBC One. "I wanted to watch Not the Nine O'Clock News on BBC Two. We'd sneak it on, turn the sound down and hope he wouldn't realise what the time was."

Judy Murray loves it when people say how smiley she is
Judy Murray loves it when people say how smiley she is The 65-year-old tennis coach has been photographed looking "glum" and "grimacing" in the players' boxes as she watched her sons Judy Murray (Image: Getty Images ) Judy Murray says people are surprised by how smiley she is. The 65-year-old tennis coach has been photographed looking "glum" and "grimacing" in the players' boxes as she watched her sons Andy Murray, 38, and Jamie Murray, 39, compete in Wimbledon and other tennis tournaments over the years, and Judy admitted she loves it when people get to see her joyous side. Writing in her column in the new issue of Woman's Weekly magazine, Judy said: "When the boys were emerging as top tennis players and we were launched into the limelight, I had a hard time from the media, seen as the pushy mum, overbearing and never smiling. "The photographers caught me looking glum, grimacing or pumping my fist, and I think a lot of people thought I was too serious. "The fact is, I'm not overbearing or pushy, I just get excited when I watch my kids. "Being in the Wimbledon players' box is not fun. It's really stressful and there's a reason I'm not smiling. Article continues below "When I meet people in everyday life now, they point out that I'm always smiling. "It's really nice that people see that side of me." The Strictly Come Dancing 2014 contestant struggled to keep a straight face when she did a series of sketches with comedian-and-actor Chris Forbes called The Other Murray Brother - which went viral and even became a set at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2022. She said: "It was probably five years ago when I was asked to work with a young comedian called Chris Forbes. "He came up with this fun idea of another Murray brother called Duncan - one who, unlike Andy and Jamie - was a complete disappointment to me and that's why I kept him out of the way. "It sounded funny and I like to help young people, so I agreed to do an online three-minute comedy sketch. When I met 'Duncan' for the first time, he was wearing a Heart of Midlothian football shirt. My dad played for Hibs, their rivals. Article continues below "He then started eating a packet of crisps right next to me, which is one of my pet peeves. I knew immediately that we were going to have some fun. "When he handed me the script, I said I couldn't say half the things on there as they were too mean. He convinced me it was fine and as he didn't try to push me to do anything, I went with it, and honestly, it was so funny. "I struggled to keep a straight face."
