The Most Important Packers: No. 9 — Jayden Reed
The Green Bay Packers went 11-6 last season, sweeping the NFC West and the AFC South along the way.
Overall, though, no one in the building was happy.
The Packers failed to build on their terrific finish to the 2023 campaign, settled for the No. 7 seed in the NFC playoffs, and lost a Wild Card game to eventual Super Bowl champion Philadelphia.
Afterwards, general manager Brian Gutekunst turned up the heat on everybody in the building.
'We need to continue to ramp up our sense of urgency,' Gutekunst said. 'I think it's time we started competing for championships.'
Those are fair expectations.
The Packers return 20 of 22 starters, and appear to have upgraded the roster via free agency and the draft. With several third and fourth year players trending upward, Green Bay should be poised to make a move.
'I think they're ready,' Gutekunst said.
Now, it's time for the Packers to prove their G.M. right.
Green Bay's first training camp practice is July 23. Between now and then I will count down the '30 Most Important Packers' heading into the 2025 campaign.
At No. 9 is wide receiver Jayden Reed.No. 9
Jayden Reed, WR
Last season
Reed led the team in receptions (55) for a second straight year and had a team-best 857 receiving yards. His six touchdown receptions ranked second.
Reed also became the only receiver in team history to post 900-plus yards from scrimmage in each of his first two seasons.
Despite being the Packers' top option in the passing game, there were seven games Reed had two catches, or fewer. And Reed's receptions and touchdowns both dipped from his 2023 numbers.
'I think that we could have done better from a staff perspective of trying to put him in some more advantageous situations where he could have produced those numbers, because he's an explosive player and he's one of those guys that you want to get the ball to, no doubt about it,' Packers coach Matt LaFleur said of Reed.
The Packers used their first round draft pick on wideout Matthew Golden and their third round pick on receiver Savion Williams. Shortly thereafter, Reed's agent — Drew Rosenhaus — met with the Packers to discuss his client's role moving forward.
'We clarified what we needed to clarify in house,' Reed said. 'We clarified what I need to get better at, what they want for (me) and I'm here to just do my job and take care of those things.'Career to date
Reed, a second round draft pick in 2023, had a tremendous rookie year.
Reed led Green Bay in catches (64), which also broke the single-season receptions record by a Packers rookie previously held by Sterling Sharpe (55). Reed also led Green Bay in receiving yards (793) and tied for the team lead with eight touchdown catches.
In addition, the Packers used Reed regularly on reverses and sweeps, and he finished the year with 119 rushing yards and two rushing TDs, despite battling a bevy of injuries.
Reed's 10 total touchdowns in 2023 rank No. 3 in franchise history among rookies behind only receiver Billy Howton (13 in 1952) and running back Eddie Lacy (11 in 2013).Outlook
Reed seems to be at an early career crossroads.
Reed's brilliant rookie season led many to predict multiple Pro Bowls could be in his future. Instead, Reed was the forgotten man far too often in 2024.
Most of the blame for Reed's disappearing act should fall on coach Matt LaFleur and his offensive staff. Reed has unique ability and should have been a focal point of the game plan every week, regardless of the opponent. Instead, LaFleur & Co. forgot about him far too often.
The Packers have more options in the passing game with the additions of Golden and Williams. But Reed should still be option No. 1.
Look for him to have him a big 2025 campaign. They Said It …
'Sometimes stats aren't always on the player. They could be on us, too, as a coaching staff. There's going to be some games where it just doesn't go that way. There's a couple injuries throughout the time that were nothing that he had to miss a lot of games, but he was banged up a little bit, too, you know? And he's the type of tough guy who's going to play through everything, you know?' — Packers wide receivers coach Jason Vrable on Reed'Yeah, it definitely started off hot. It's a long season, and there's ebbs and flows with every season. I think there was a point in time about midway through where he got a little bit banged up. Nothing serious, just the overall pounding, I would say, and I think it definitely took a little bit of a toll. But I also think that we could have done better from a staff perspective of trying to put him in some more advantageous situations where he could have produced those numbers, because he's an explosive player and he's one of those guys that you want to get the ball to, no doubt about it.' — Packers coach Matt LaFleur on Reed vanishing at times in 2024'It's hard. It's football. You gonna take hits, so whatever I gotta do to help the team win, that's my mindset, that's what I'm gonna do. So I don't really -- I don't know. I'm a player, so whatever the coaching tell me to do, that's what I'm here to do, so I don't make the rules. I don't make the plays. I'm here to just run the plays and be here for my teammates.' — Reed on running jet sweepsTHE TOP 30

Cooper Flagg's Physical Appearance is Turning Heads Before Summer League
Cooper Flagg's Physical Appearance is Turning Heads Before Summer League originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Cooper Flagg is set to appear in his first Summer League. Selected No. 1 overall by the Dallas Mavericks in the 2025 NBA Draft, expectations are high that Flagg will be able to make an immediate impact on the Mavs. Advertisement The 18-year-old forward is coming off a memorable season with the Duke Blue Devils, during which he averaged 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds and 4.2 assists, while shooting 48.1% from the field and 38.5% from deep. Prior to being drafted, he had been compared to the likes of Scottie Pippen, Kawhi Leonard, Jayson Tatum and Lamar Odom, among many others. His first opportunity to show he can be a game-changer for Dallas will come in the Summer League. The Mavs are participating in the Las Vegas Summer League, which begins Thursday. In the build-of to the tournament, however, Flagg has been making headlines for a different reason. As the Mavs continue to promote Flagg and the rest of their Summer League team, fans couldn't help but take notice of the change in the youngster's physical appearance, particularly his facial hair. Advertisement Flagg already rocked a goatee during the NBA Draft, and since then, he has grown it a little bit more. Regardless, while some like it, others aren't big fans of it. "goatee flagg," a fan noticed. Another one shared, "That goatee adds so much aura to Cooper Flagg." "Goatee Flagg may be another animal," a third supporter added. A critic remarked, "He's gotta lose the Goatee." A fifth poster echoed a similar sentiment, writing, "Goatee is not it man." "He not cutting that goatee, huh?" a social media user stated. Mavericks Rookie Cooper Flagg Admits Issue With His 31-Point Game
Mavericks Rookie Cooper Flagg Admits Issue With His 31-Point Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. After a rather underwhelming Summer League debut, Dallas Mavericks rookie Cooper Flagg bounced back against the San Antonio Spurs on Saturday. Advertisement In the battle of the two Texas teams, Flagg exploded for 31 points on 10-of-21 shooting. The No. 1 overall pick of the 2025 NBA Draft also had four rebounds and an assist, while committing just two turnovers. Flagg outshined 2025 No. 2 overall pick Dylan Harper, who had 16 points for the Spurs. Harper, however, had six rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block. While the Mavs ended up losing 76-69, it was still an overall encouraging showing for Flagg. After all, in his first game against the Los Angeles Lakers, he was 5-of-21 from the field en route to scoring just 10 points. Dallas Mavericks forward Cooper Flagg (32) scored 31 points against the San Antonio Spurs in the Summer Ward-Imagn Images After the game, Flagg talked about his play and noticeable improvement, a clear sign that he has gotten more comfortable with the level of play. Nonetheless, he acknowledged that it still wasn't a great performance, pointing out his free throw shooting as a key issue. Advertisement The 18-year-old forward was 8-of-13 from the free throw line, something that Flagg says his mom won't be happy about. "Missed a bunch of free throws, my mom probably isn't very happy with that," Flagg said while talking to the media following the game, per Joey Mistretta of ClutchPoints. There's certainly room for improvement for Cooper Flagg, but there's no denying that he showed against the Spurs the talent and skills that made him the best prospect in the class of 2025. Flagg and the Mavericks return to action on Monday against the Charlotte Hornets. It will be an interesting matchup, as Flagg faces off against his former Duke Blue Devils teammate Kon Knueppel — the No. 4 overall pick in the 2025 draft. Klay Thompson Won't Tolerate This Kobe Bryant Disrespect
Klay Thompson Won't Tolerate This Kobe Bryant Disrespect originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Dallas Mavericks star Klay Thompson won't stand for any disrespect towards NBA legend Kobe Bryant. Thompson made that abundantly clear after Bleacher Report released its latest ranking of the 100 greatest players in NBA history. On the list, the late Los Angeles Lakers legend was ranked No. 11, behind Michael Jordan, LeBron James, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, Bill Russell, Shaquille O'Neal, Tim Duncan, Larry Bird, Wilt Chamberlain and Steph Curry. Advertisement While the BR list was full of praise for Bryant, even noting that "there's a case to be made that Kobe is actually the most influential to ever set foot on the NBA's hardwood," many players and fans alike felt that the ranking doesn't reflect that sentiment. O'Neal himself called the ranking "criminal," and Thompson soon chimed in with his own critical take. Bleacher Report ranked Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant 11th on its all-time top 100 NBA players Terada-Imagn Images On his Instagram Stories, Thompson shared a quote from former NBA player Etan Thomas calling out the "disrespect" on Bryant and captioned it with, "SMH" — short for "shaking my head," a clear sign of disapproval. In another post, the Mavericks sharpshooter — who also landed on the list at No. 98 — posted a video of Bryant's highlight reels from his earlier years in the NBA, noting, "And this is just Fro-be # 8 ... [Expletive] is wrong with yall." Advertisement Klay Thompson grew up idolizing Kobe Bryant, so it's no surprise that he's disappointed with his low ranking. For Thompson and many Bryant supporters, the Black Mamba should at least be in the top 10 in the conversation for the greatest players of all time. "Ask anybody who was born around the time I was (in 1990), and he was like our Michael Jordan," Thompson said of Bryant last January, per "His style of play and his influence on the game on a global scale is something that is probably only second to Michael."
