Padres' Left Fielder Pursuit Could Lead Them to $28 Million Orioles Slugger

The San Diego Padres' search for a left fielder continues as the trade deadline gets closer.
General manager A.J. Preller isn't expected to let the deadline pass without addressing the position, and the Padres have some work to do in the National League Wild Card race. Tim Britton, Aaron Gleeman and Eno Sarris of The Athletic list the Padres as a team that needs to add hitters.
"Thanks to a deeper NL Central than anyone anticipated, the Padres have dropped out of playoff position in the last week," they wrote. "And that places a spotlight on their position of obvious, glaring need: left field. San Diego's offensive numbers in left have gotten better since it started playing Gavin Sheets out there, but that's left the defense compromised and only helps the lineup so much when Sheets' bat is replaced at DH by José Iglesias or Trenton Brooks."
The Padres know they have to find a strong bat with competent defense in left field, and Ryan O'Hearn from the Baltimore Orioles could be their match.
ARLINGTON, TEXAS - JULY 01: Ryan O'Hearn #32 of the Baltimore Orioles swings his bat during the second inning against the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field on July 01, 2025 in Arlington, Texas.
ARLINGTON, TEXAS - JULY 01: Ryan O'Hearn #32 of the Baltimore Orioles swings his bat during the second inning against the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field on July 01, 2025 in Arlington, Texas.O'Hearn entered Thursday with a slash line of .294/.381/.472 with 11 home runs and 30 RBI. The 31-year-old slugger was just named the starting designated hitter for the American League in the upcoming All-Star game.
While he has primarily played first base for the Orioles this year, he's been utilized in the outfield more than ever before as Baltimore looks to increase his trade value. The Padres know there is extra pressure to get deals done before the deadline.
"Right now eight National League teams are on pace to win 87 games, which means some good teams won't be playing into October," the trio wrote. "That puts extra emphasis on the upgrades available for the home stretch."
O'Hearn would be a strong fit for the Padres as they could greatly benefit from his offensive work. He's a league-average defender in left field over 16 innings of work this season. In right field, he's slightly below league average in 112 innings.
San Diego may not find the "perfect" solution, but O'Hearn is about as good as the Padres may be able to get. He's owed the remainder of his $8 million club option this year before hitting free agency, so San Diego would not have to cough up much to get the deal done.

College Football News writer Peter Fiutak makes a win total prediction for Clemson in 2025
Where does Clemson football land in 2026 national recruiting rankings after busy month? Under Dabo Swinney, Clemson football heads into another season with playoff hopes — but the betting line isn't quite as high as the national chatter suggests. The Tigers' win total is set at 9.5, which they've only topped once in the past three seasons after dominating that mark during their mid-2010s run. College Football News' Pete Fiutak actually places his projection a tick lower at nine wins, yet he isn't dismissing what this roster can do. 'The Tigers will know right out of the gate if they're for real,' Fiutak said, pointing to the huge early showdown with LSU. From there, he sees enough tricky matchups to test Clemson's focus but thinks this team can still reach the College Football Playoff without an ACC title if it handles its business. A major piece of the puzzle is whether the defensive front can look more like the unit that anchored Clemson's last national championship. Fiutak highlights how in 2018 'no one averaged over four yards per carry' against that front, but last season the Tigers were gashed on the ground far too often. He noted that four teams — Texas, Georgia, South Carolina and Louisville — all averaged more than six yards per carry and beat Clemson as a result. On offense, Fiutak says the line has to be the foundation. Four starters return, with Blake Miller and Walker Parks both landing in his top 10 Clemson players. 'The skill guys get all of the love and attention, but if Clemson is going to have an expected huge season offensively, it starts with the line loaded with All-ACC-caliber talents,' Fiutak said. The backfield is another question mark. Freshman Gideon Davidson is viewed as a potential difference-maker, especially if Jay Haynes can't bounce back from his knee injury. Fiutak thinks Cade Klubnik's growth as a runner helps, but Clemson will need Davidson to be ready if they want to lean on the ground game late in the year. In the bigger picture, Fiutak frames 2025 as a test for Swinney's patient, recruit-and-develop blueprint. 'Maybe this is how you're really supposed to do it… Maybe it just took a few years to get here,' he said. For a program chasing its old standard in a new era, Clemson has a chance to prove its way still works. Rangers' $14 Million Slugger Tabbed Intriguing 'Buy-Low Trade Target'
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Texas Rangers have been one of the more disappointing teams in baseball. After winning the World Series in 2023, they've fallen off a cliff. As of now, Texas looks to be sellers at the trade deadline and it could entertain the idea of trading a few valuable pieces away if the price is right. Bleacher Report's Joel Reuter recently listed Rangers outfielder Adolis García as a potential "buy low trade target" for contending teams with holes in the outfield. ARLINGTON, TEXAS - JULY 01: Adolis García #53 of the Texas Rangers hits a two RBI single during the third inning against the Baltimore Orioles at Globe Life Field on July 01, 2025 in Arlington,... ARLINGTON, TEXAS - JULY 01: Adolis García #53 of the Texas Rangers hits a two RBI single during the third inning against the Baltimore Orioles at Globe Life Field on July 01, 2025 in Arlington, Texas. More"Over his first three full seasons in the majors, he posted a 113 OPS+ while averaging 30 doubles, 32 home runs, 99 RBI and 4.0 WAR, earning All-Star selections in 2021 and 2023," Reuter wrote. "He also took home 2023 ALCS MVP honors while helping lead the Rangers to a World Series title. "He took a step backward last season with a 96 OPS+ and 0.3 WAR in 154 games, though he still tallied 25 home runs and 85 RBI. Things have continued to trend in the wrong direction this year. Despite the middling production, he still ranks among the MLB leaders in average exit velocity (93.4 mph, 94th percentile). Perhaps a change of scenery could jump-start his season." There are plenty of teams around the league who could use a slugger like García this season. The San Diego Padres, Philadelphia Phillies, Cincinnati Reds, and Kansas City Royals all come to mind. But it might not make the most sense for the Rangers to trade him now. He has a few years left of team control, and Texas is seemingly trying to put the pieces together to win. While it hasn't worked out this year, Texas is a few moves away from contending next season. More MLB: MLB Writer Suggests Massive Red Sox Trade Involving Alex Bregman, Luis Castillo
