No matter where you're traveling on a cruise, it's essential to read up both on local laws in your cruise ports of call and your cruise line's rules and restrictions.
Even though marijuana is legal in some states and parts of the world, cruise lines sailing from the U.S. like Carnival follow U.S. federal law, which strictly prohibits possession of marijuana and other illegal substances. This means that marijuana, cannabis, and cannabis derivatives such as Cannabidiol (CBD) products used for medicinal purposes are prohibited on board cruise ships. In some ports that Carnival and other cruise lines visit, these substances are illegal, too, and attempting to bring them into certain cruise destinations can come with severe penalties.
A group of passengers who recently sailed on one Carnival Cruise Line ship are now learning exactly how harsh those penalties can be after they were found in possession of multiple packages containing drugs. Authorities believe they intended to smuggle those drugs into the cruise destination.Bermuda police arrest four Carnival cruise passengers for drugs
Four Carnival Cruise Line passengers have been arrested and detained by authorities in Bermuda after they were found in possession of illegal drugs on board a ship sailing a Bermuda cruise from the U.S. The passengers are accused of trying to smuggle drugs onto the island.
'Four U.S. cruise ship passengers were arrested upon arrival in Bermuda after Carnival Cruise Lines security detained them for possession of a significant quantity of illegal drugs and drug paraphernalia, believed intended for distribution on the island,' Bermuda Police Service said in a July 22 announcement.Items seized from the Carnival cruise passengers included:
Multiple compressed cannabis packages
One package containing carfentanyl
Vape pens
Suspected THC gummies
'Carfentanyl is about 100 times stronger than fentanyl and was originally used to sedate large animals like elephants. Even tiny amounts can be deadly. This seizure may have prevented a potential tragedy,' Acting Detective Superintendent Derricka Burns said in a statement.

Cruise passengers face harsh drug penalties in Bermuda
The Bermuda Police Service works with cruise lines and other partners to prevent illegal drugs from entering the country and enforce its strict local drug laws. The U.S. State Department cautions cruise travelers about this in the Bermuda international travel information it provides on its website.
'Bermuda Customs routinely boards visiting cruise ships with drug sniffing dogs and will arrest persons found to have any illegal drugs in their cabin. Penalties for possessing, using, or trafficking in illegal drugs in Bermuda are severe, and convicted offenders can expect jail sentences and/or heavy fines. Having a prescription for marijuana or any other drug currently illegal in Bermuda will not protect you from arrest or prosecution for possession of that illegal drug,' the State Department warns.Earlier this year, a Royal Caribbean passenger was fined $2,500 for bringing cannabis and cocaine into Bermuda. In that case, the passenger did not realize cannabis was illegal in Bermuda and mistakenly brought it in for personal use. She likely would have faced harsher penalties had she not been cooperative and immediately admitted the offense.
Along with issuing her a hefty fine, the judge delivered a stern warning to always do your research when traveling to another country.

Royal Caribbean and Carnival Cruise Line face alarming incidents

Royal Caribbean and Carnival Cruise Line face alarming incidents originally appeared on TravelHost. Although cruises are most commonly associated with carefree vacation vibes, occasionally distressing incidents happen on board ships that leave some cruisers rethinking their vacation choices. But just like a serious crime or accident can occur at any resort you choose to visit, or even in your own neighborhood, cruise ships sometimes become the setting of unfortunate and unexpected events. They are floating cities after a regular city or a floating one, when you bring all kinds of people together, and especially when you add an abundance of alcohol into the mix, you're bound to have some accidents, violence, and crime happen. It's rare, however, to have passengers and news outlets reporting almost simultaneously about serious incidents on two separate cruise ships from two different cruise lines that occurred within a day of each other. But that's exactly what happened as word came from the sea to land about a shocking man overboard incident on Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas on July 24. Not long after that news broke, it was reported that the FBI responded to an incident aboard Carnival Dream that concerned many passengers when medical calls rang out on board in the early morning hours of July 23. Doug Parker shared more details on these troubling cruise ship events, and other cruise news, on the July 28 edition of Cruise News Caribbean crew member dies after violent on board altercation Cruise News TodayTranscript: This is Cruise News Today with Doug Parker. Good morning, here's your cruise news for Monday, July 28th. The woman was sent to a hospital. The man did not survive after being Caribbean initially reported a man overboard, but later confirmed the violent altercation. In a statement, the cruise line said: 'Our crew immediately initiated a search and rescue operation, but unfortunately the crew member passed away. Incident aboard Carnival Dream cruise ship leads to FBI response In a story that is raising a lot of questions after multiple accounts on social media, an incident aboard the Texas-based Carnival Dream has prompted a federal response, but no criminal investigation has been confirmed. The FBI says it's aware of an event that happened on Carnival Dream last week and is working with the Coast Guard, Customs and Carnival. Passengers reported early morning alerts and an all call for medical help on the Serenity Deck. In a statement, the FBI local field office said: 'FBI Houston is aware of an incident that occurred on July 23, 2025 on the Carnival Dream cruise ship.' Despite what's being posted on social media and quotes given to news stations, Carnival Cruise Line denies any investigation into a suspicious death and says, quote: 'It's disappointing to learn that any guests might be spreading rumors about something they know nothing about.' It should be noted that the FBI has authority over most incidents at sea on American cruise ships, depending on location, departure points, and nationalities Beyond resumes cruises from Florida after repairs Following five days at the Grand Bahamas Shipyard in Freeport, Bahamas, the Celebrity Beyond returned to service yesterday. Propulsion issues sidelined the ship for a week, canceling the July 20th sailing of Beyond. The ship instead went to Freeport last Monday for repair, where it stayed for five days. FBI probing alleged sexual assault on Carnival cruise ship

The FBI is investigating sexual assault allegations on a Carnival cruise ship. An FBI spokesperson told KHOU 11 that the alleged sexual assault incident took place onboard the Carnival Breeze ship based out of Galveston, Texas. The incident happened on a cruise that returned to Galveston on Monday. 'FBI Houston is aware of allegations of a sexual assault that occurred on the Carnival Breeze cruise ship which docked in Galveston on 07/28/2025,' the FBI spokesperson wrote. 'As is customary with crimes aboard a cruise ship, an FBI Maritime Liaison Agent, based out of the Texas City Resident Agency, is coordinating with the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG), Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and the cruise line regarding this incident. Also keeping in line with case reviews or open investigations, the FBI will not be providing additional details or updates regarding these matters.' The Carnival Breeze cruise was 4 days and made a stop in Cozumel, Mexico. The FBI is also investigating a death aboard a different Gavelston-based cruise ship, the Carnival Dream. It does not automatically imply suspicious circumstances, and the facts of this matter do not suggest any such activity. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to our guest's family and loved ones in this difficult time,' the spokesperson added. KHOU reported that the Galveston County Medical Examiner's Office identified the person who died, 48-year-old Euvelester Villarreal Jr., passed away due to natural causes.
