Emergency will always be marked as black chapter in Indian democratic history: Uttarakhand CM Dhami

India Gazette4 days ago

Dehradun (Uttarakhand) [India], June 27 (ANI): Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami participated in the 'Samman Program for Democracy Fighters on completion of 50 years of Emergency' organised at the Himalayan Cultural Centre, Dehradun.
CM Dhami said that the period of Emergency will always be marked as a black chapter in Indian democratic history.
Paying tribute to the democracy fighters, CM Dhami said, 'Today we are getting the privilege of honouring the great heroes who protected democracy. The period of Emergency will always be marked as a black chapter in Indian democratic history. This decision, as always, was the result of the dogmatism and dictatorial attitude of a family that considered the country as its fiefdom.'
Union Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Bhupendra Yadav was also present on this occasion.
CM Dhami honoured 10 democracy fighters, including Narendra Kumar Mittal, Ranjit Singh Juyal.
Welcoming Union Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Bhupendra Yadav on his arrival in Uttarakhand, the Chief Minister said that with the cooperation of the Central Government, the forest-related matters of the state are being resolved promptly. Uttarakhand is getting all possible cooperation and help from the Central Government on priority.
The Chief Minister said that during the Emergency, the Indian Parliament was held hostage, censorship was imposed on the freedom of the press and the dignity of the judiciary was shredded, and the fundamental rights of crores of countrymen were trampled upon.
'In those dark days of the Emergency, the then government, intoxicated with power, ruthlessly suppressed all opposition leaders, hundreds of journalists and every voice that was being raised to protect democracy. The entire country was turned into an open prison by crushing freedom of expression,' CM Dhami said.
CM Dhami said, 'Salute to the protectors of democracy, who made the dungeons of the prison their austerity ground and did not let the lamp of democracy be extinguished. At that time, innumerable democracy fighters like Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan, revered Nanaji Deshmukh, revered Atal Bihari Vajpayee, respected LK Advani, George Fernandes and Chandrashekhar ji worked to give direction to the movement against the decision of the dictatorial government to impose the Emergency. Even while being confined in the four walls of the prison, these leaders worked to awaken the consciousness of democracy among the youth.'
'At that time, respected Atal ji worked to inspire the youth through many poems. Many social-cultural organisations, including Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad and Jan Sangh, also launched a movement to revive democracy with all their might against the oppression of the dictatorial government. This movement also received full support from the students of universities and colleges across the country, and gradually this movement turned into a nationwide people's revolution,' he further said.
The Chief Minister said that many such sons were born on the holy land of Uttarakhand, who played a leading role in that people's revolution by showing indomitable courage to protect democracy.
'Shri Chandra Singh Rathore ji of Bageshwar, while being a teacher, worked to awaken faith in democracy among the students, for which he had to face many tortures, even had to lose his job, which he could get back after 32 years of struggle. Govind Ram Dhingra of Pauri was also forcibly put in jail for being associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. There are hundreds of such examples in every district of Uttarakhand who had made their significant contribution to restore democracy,' he said.
The Chief Minister said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself was playing a leading role in the fight for democracy by staying underground during the Emergency.
'This is the reason why he started celebrating 25 June as 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas' to make the coming generations aware of the contribution of democracy fighters and the dark chapter of the Emergency. The respected Prime Minister had also written a book named 'Sangharshama Gujarat' in 1978, mentioning the events of the Emergency. Just yesterday, Home Minister Amit Shah also released a new book 'The Emergency Diaries' written by the Prime Minister on his struggle during the Emergency. I am confident that through this book and Samvidhan Hatya Diwas, the new generation of India will also be able to know how the Constitution was trampled upon during the Emergency and the soul of democracy was crushed ruthlessly,' he said.
The Chief Minister said that under the leadership and guidance of the Prime Minister, state government is working with full determination to honour the freedom fighters. 'Various exhibitions are also being organised across the state to make our young generation aware about this great movement against the Emergency,' he added. (ANI)

'Anti-National Acts Routine Due To Lenient Courts': Allahabad HC Denies Bail For Pro-Pakistan Post

Last Updated: Ansar Ahmad Siddique had shared a video on Facebook on May 3, 2025, glorifying 'Pakistan Zindabad' and appealing to others to support Pakistanis. In a strongly worded order, the Allahabad High Court on June 26, 2025, refused to grant bail to a 62-year-old man accused of sharing a Facebook video allegedly promoting anti-national sentiments, stating that courts in India have become 'liberal and tolerant towards such acts of people with anti-national bent of mind". The bench of Justice Siddharth, presiding over the bail plea of accused Ansar Ahmad Siddique in a case registered under Sections 197 and 152 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), said that the conduct of the applicant amounted to an affront to the Constitution and national integrity. The FIR, registered at Chhatari Police Station in Bulandshahar district, alleged that Siddique had shared a video on Facebook on May 3, 2025, glorifying 'Pakistan Zindabad" and appealing to others to support Pakistanis. The prosecution further argued that this post came shortly after a terror attack in Pahalgam, where 26 Hindu men were killed, implying the applicant's sympathy towards terror acts motivated by religious extremism. Court observed that such acts not only hurt national sentiments but also threatened the sovereignty and unity of the country. Quoting Article 51-A of the Constitution, Justice Siddharth said every citizen is duty-bound to uphold the nation's integrity, its flag, anthem, and constitutional values. 'Clearly the act of the applicant is disrespectful to the Constitution and its ideals and also his act amounts to challenging the sovereignty of India and adversely affecting unity and integrity of India by sharing anti-social and anti-Indian post," the judge stated. Issuing a warning on the increasing frequency of such incidents, the court remarked, 'Commission of such offences is becoming routine affair in this country because the courts are liberal and tolerant towards such acts of people with anti national bent of mind. It is not a fit case for enlarging the applicant on bail at this stage". With these observations, the high court dismissed Siddique's bail plea and directed the trial court to expedite proceedings under Section 346 of the BNSS and Section 309 of the CrPC. Italy opens 500,000 jobs for foreigners by 2028: How Indians can benefit

Fancy a job in Italy? Its cabinet on Monday approved a new migration decree allowing nearly half a million documented foreign nationals—including Indian citizens—to enter the country over the next three years. The move comes amid a growing labour shortage in the eurozone's third-largest economy. The Italian government said the decision would facilitate 'the entry into Italy of essential labour that is indispensable to the national economic and production system and otherwise unavailable domestically'. The decree sets an annual cap of 164,850 new entries in 2025, with a target of 497,550 over four years. It is the second such decision under Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who has now authorised more than 950,000 legal entries since she took office in 2022. Demand growing despite tough stance on migration The policy comes despite the ruling coalition's tough rhetoric on migration. Meloni's government has repeatedly promised tighter border control and action against undocumented arrivals, but has also admitted that Italy's ageing population and shrinking workforce require foreign labour. The latest decree will cover seasonal and non-seasonal workers, home carers, and highly skilled professionals. 'Our government—and many others in Europe—wants to ensure that migration is based on labour market needs. We do not want human traffickers determining who enters; we want democratic, fair systems that give migrants opportunities for integration and decent lives,' said Antonio Bartoli, Italian Ambassador to India. Opportunity for Indian workers Speaking at the launch of the Global Access to Talent from India (GATI) Foundation in New Delhi this May, Bartoli pointed to the demographic gap that links Italy and India. 'We (Italians) are getting older. Currently, 23% of Italy's population is over 65. By 2050, this will rise to 34%,' he said. 'At the same time, India's working-age population will grow by 63 million by 2030 and 120.8 million by 2040.' 'This ageing trend is creating labour market pressures across multiple key sectors, from healthcare to advanced manufacturing and digital services,' Bartoli said. In 2024, around 70% of Italian companies reported difficulties recruiting. The government estimates a shortage of: • 258,000 workers in services like trade, restaurants, and hotels • 45,000 doctors and 65,000 nurses in healthcare • 280,000 skilled workers in engineering and green economy sectors • Specialists in AI, cybersecurity, and data science The ambassador called this a 'natural structural synergy' between the two countries, noting that India could help meet Italy's labour demand if legal channels were strengthened. Legal migration takes priority Bartoli also flagged the importance of maintaining legal pathways and cracking down on irregular entries. 'We do not want to see migration flows controlled by traffickers or unsafe journeys,' he said. 'We want regular migration that meets our labour needs and allows for integration.' Meloni has repeated similar concerns, insisting that while Italy needs some legal migrants, it will continue cracking down on undocumented arrivals. The latest decree also includes incentives for countries that actively promote legal migration and public messaging against irregular routes. As per India's external affairs ministry, 167,333 Indians are currently residing in Italy. With the new decree, this number is expected to grow steadily as more workers enter legally through job-linked permits.
