Emergency will always be marked as black chapter in Indian democratic history: Uttarakhand CM Dhami
Dehradun (Uttarakhand) [India], June 27 (ANI): Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami participated in the 'Samman Program for Democracy Fighters on completion of 50 years of Emergency' organised at the Himalayan Cultural Centre, Dehradun. CM Dhami said that the period of Emergency will always be marked as a black chapter in Indian democratic history. Paying tribute to the democracy fighters, CM Dhami said, 'Today we are getting the privilege of honouring the great heroes who protected democracy. The period of Emergency will always be marked as a black chapter in Indian democratic history. This decision, as always, was the result of the dogmatism and dictatorial attitude of a family that considered the country as its fiefdom.' Union Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Bhupendra Yadav was also present on this occasion. CM Dhami honoured 10 democracy fighters, including Narendra Kumar Mittal, Ranjit Singh Juyal. Welcoming Union Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Bhupendra Yadav on his arrival in Uttarakhand, the Chief Minister said that with the cooperation of the Central Government, the forest-related matters of the state are being resolved promptly. Uttarakhand is getting all possible cooperation and help from the Central Government on priority. The Chief Minister said that during the Emergency, the Indian Parliament was held hostage, censorship was imposed on the freedom of the press and the dignity of the judiciary was shredded, and the fundamental rights of crores of countrymen were trampled upon. 'In those dark days of the Emergency, the then government, intoxicated with power, ruthlessly suppressed all opposition leaders, hundreds of journalists and every voice that was being raised to protect democracy. The entire country was turned into an open prison by crushing freedom of expression,' CM Dhami said. CM Dhami said, 'Salute to the protectors of democracy, who made the dungeons of the prison their austerity ground and did not let the lamp of democracy be extinguished. At that time, innumerable democracy fighters like Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan, revered Nanaji Deshmukh, revered Atal Bihari Vajpayee, respected LK Advani, George Fernandes and Chandrashekhar ji worked to give direction to the movement against the decision of the dictatorial government to impose the Emergency. Even while being confined in the four walls of the prison, these leaders worked to awaken the consciousness of democracy among the youth.' 'At that time, respected Atal ji worked to inspire the youth through many poems. Many social-cultural organisations, including Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad and Jan Sangh, also launched a movement to revive democracy with all their might against the oppression of the dictatorial government. This movement also received full support from the students of universities and colleges across the country, and gradually this movement turned into a nationwide people's revolution,' he further said. The Chief Minister said that many such sons were born on the holy land of Uttarakhand, who played a leading role in that people's revolution by showing indomitable courage to protect democracy. 'Shri Chandra Singh Rathore ji of Bageshwar, while being a teacher, worked to awaken faith in democracy among the students, for which he had to face many tortures, even had to lose his job, which he could get back after 32 years of struggle. Govind Ram Dhingra of Pauri was also forcibly put in jail for being associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. There are hundreds of such examples in every district of Uttarakhand who had made their significant contribution to restore democracy,' he said. The Chief Minister said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself was playing a leading role in the fight for democracy by staying underground during the Emergency. 'This is the reason why he started celebrating 25 June as 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas' to make the coming generations aware of the contribution of democracy fighters and the dark chapter of the Emergency. The respected Prime Minister had also written a book named 'Sangharshama Gujarat' in 1978, mentioning the events of the Emergency. Just yesterday, Home Minister Amit Shah also released a new book 'The Emergency Diaries' written by the Prime Minister on his struggle during the Emergency. I am confident that through this book and Samvidhan Hatya Diwas, the new generation of India will also be able to know how the Constitution was trampled upon during the Emergency and the soul of democracy was crushed ruthlessly,' he said. The Chief Minister said that under the leadership and guidance of the Prime Minister, state government is working with full determination to honour the freedom fighters. 'Various exhibitions are also being organised across the state to make our young generation aware about this great movement against the Emergency,' he added. (ANI)

Collective action needed to conserve and protect big cats: Bhupender Yadav
New Delhi: Union Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Bhupender Yadav on Monday emphasised the importance of collective action to advance the conservation and protection of the seven major big cat species and their natural habitats and assisting in securing the ecological future and mitigating the adverse effects of climate change. In his address at the first Assembly of the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA), envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for conservation of big cats in range countries, held here, Yadav highlighted that India has emerged as a global leader in wildlife conservation, demonstrating notable successes over the past decade, and called upon the Big Cat range countries to actively engage and collaborate in the initiatives and programmes of the grouping. The Assembly, which is the apex body of the IBCA, was attended by ministerial delegations from 9 countries - Bhutan, Cambodia, Eswatini, Guinea, India, Liberia, Suriname, Somalia and Kazakhstan. It unanimously endorsed Yadav as the President of the IBCA, while it also endorsed S.P. Yadav as the Director General of IBCA. Created by the Indian government, the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) is a coalition of 95 range countries with a mandate for the conservation of seven big cats, namely tigers, lions, leopards, snow leopards, cheetahs, jaguars, and pumas. "The Assembly endorsed the proceedings of the first International Steering Committee meeting of IBCA, which was held in April 2024, ratified the Headquarters Agreement signed by IBCA with the Republic of India, approved the Workplan, Rules of Procedure of the Assembly and the manual of Staff and financial regulations of the IBCA. These will serve as the guiding foundation for the effective governance, operations, and collaborative initiatives of the International Big Cat Alliance," the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change said in a statement. The IBCA was established by the Indian government, through the nodal organisation, the National Tiger Conservation Authority, through an order on March 12, 2024. Its primary objective is to facilitate collaboration and synergy amongst range countries and other stakeholders, consolidating successful conservation practices and expertise to achieve a common goal of conservation of big cats at a global level.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday flagged off 200 electric buses in the national capital, strengthening Delhi's public transport with a clean mobility push. The new buses are part of the Delhi Electric Vehicle Initiative (DEVI), which aims to improve last-mile connectivity and reduce vehicular emissions in congested areas of the city. World Environment Day: Delhi CM Rekha Gupta announces 280 electric buses
New Delhi [India], June 5 (ANI): On World Environment Day, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced that 280 electric buses will be added to the city's fleet by 2027 as part of a new electric vehicle (EV) policy. Speaking to ANI, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said that the Delhi government plans to add 280 electric buses by 2027. 'We have decided to give 280 electric buses to Delhi. By 2027, the whole fleet of buses provided by the Delhi government will be electric. We are also bringing in a new EV policy,' she said. CM Gupta praised the new buses, calling them a tremendous asset for Delhi and highlighting their high comfort level and security features. She said, 'These buses are a tremendous asset for Delhi. This is a highly comfortable bus. Cameras and a panic button have been installed inside the bus. The buses have a low floor and are air-conditioned.' CM Gupta criticised previous governments, saying, 'The previous governments never paid much attention to the environment. Delhi was deprived of the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign under the last government. Our target is to plant 70 lakh trees this year.' Meanwhile, Union Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Bhupender Yadav praised the central government's efforts to curb vehicular pollution through smart EV and hydrogen buses. He said, 'The Central government is regularly working on the problem of vehicular pollution... This new campaign for smart EV and hydrogen buses is a huge step in this direction.' He noted, 'Under the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign, around 109 crore people planted nearly 140 crore trees yesterday.' Yadav also highlighted PM Modi's symbolic tree plantings in recent years and called the gift of electric buses a step toward purifying Delhi's air. Regarding the tree-planting campaign, Yadav noted, 'Under the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign, around 109 crore people planted nearly 140 crore trees yesterday. This year, PM Modi planted a Banyan sapling. Last year he planted a Peepal sapling. His gift of electric buses to Delhi will surely work to purify the air in Delhi.' Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off 200 electric buses under the Delhi government's sustainable transport initiative. He also planted a tree under 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' initiative. Delhi LG VK Saxena, CM Rekha Gupta, Union Minister Bhupendra Yadav and Delhi Cabinet minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa are also present. Ramsar tag for Khichan in Phalodi, Menar in Udaipur
1 2 Jaipur/Udaipur: Two wetlands in Rajasthan—Khichan in Phalodi and Menar in Udaipur—were declared Ramsar Sites, raising India's total count to 91. With the addition of these wetlands, Rajasthan now has four Ramsar sites, including Sambhar Salt Lake and Keoladeo Ghana National Park in Bharatpur. India has the highest number of such Wetlands in Asia. The announcement came on the eve of World Environment Day 2025, reinforcing Rajasthan's commitment to preserving its natural ecosystems. Menar, often called the 'Bird Village,' is celebrated for its community-driven conservation success, while Khichan is renowned for hosting thousands of migratory Demoiselle cranes each year, attracting birdwatchers nationwide. Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the development on X, saying, "Great news! India's strides in environmental conservation are happening with great vigour and are powered by public participation." In 2023, the State Wetland Authority recommended Khichan and Menar, along with three other sites in Rajasthan, for Ramsar designation. Their inclusion reaffirms India's ongoing efforts to protect its diverse wetland ecosystems. The Ramsar Convention, adopted in 1971 in the Iranian city of Ramsar, provides a global framework for the conservation and wise use of wetlands. India became a signatory in 1982. A forest official said, "The Ramsar status not only enhances the ecological significance of these wetlands but also brings international support for their sustainable management and protection. "
