French Sharpshooter Could Shock Mavs Fans In Summer Roster Bid
As the Dallas Mavericks prepare for the 2025 Las Vegas Summer League, all eyes will naturally be on No. 1 overall pick Cooper Flagg making his professional debut. But don't sleep on another French talent who could steal some headlines: Melvin Ajinca, the Mavericks' 2024 second-round draft-and-stash prospect who spent this past season developing in Europe's top competition.

After a full campaign with LDLC ASVEL in both the French LNB Pro A and the EuroLeague, the 6-foot-8 wing returns to Vegas with newfound confidence, improved skills, and a legitimate opportunity to prove he deserves a spot on Dallas's main roster.
When the Mavericks acquired Ajinca's draft rights from the New York Knicks on June 27, 2024 — one day after his 20th birthday — they knew they were getting a developmental prospect with intriguing upside. Rather than rushing him into the NBA, Dallas wisely let him continue to grow overseas with ASVEL, one of Europe's premier basketball programs.
The decision paid off. After struggling with efficiency in his initial Summer League stint (shooting just 29.5 percent from the field), Ajinca dramatically improved overseas, playing alongside veteran guards Theo Maledon and Paris Lee. He averaged 5.4 points and 1.2 rebounds in 14.4 minutes per game across 27 EuroLeague contests — modest stats that don't reflect the strides he made.
Most notably, Ajinca transformed his three-point shooting, hitting 42.7 percent from deep in EuroLeague play — a dramatic improvement from his previous numbers. His best performance came in December when he dropped 20 points against Paris, going 8-of-12 from the field with four three-pointers. Mavericks GM Nico Harrison pointed to Ajinca's age and overseas development plan as key factors. 'The beauty of his age and the fact that he is playing in Europe is that we can kind of figure it out,' Harrison said on draft night.

That patience appears to be paying off. Several factors align to make Ajinca a prime breakout candidate this summer. For one, there's a family connection to the franchise — his cousin, Alexis Ajinca, played for Dallas during the 2010–11 season, giving Melvin familiarity with the organization and added motivation to carry on the family legacy.
More importantly, Ajinca's skill set fits today's NBA. At 6-foot-8 with above-average athleticism, he projects as a true '3-and-D' wing. According to Synergy Sports data from his pre-draft evaluations, Ajinca ranked in the 69th percentile in transition (1.20 points per possession) and shot 38.2 percent coming off screens — both elite indicators for a wing prospect.
Under assistant coach Josh Broghamer, who will lead the Mavericks' Summer League squad, Ajinca enters with realistic expectations and a clear set of goals. This time around, he brings not only confidence but a defined role. The Mavericks will look for shooting consistency, defensive versatility, and improved basketball IQ — all areas where his EuroLeague tape suggests real growth.
Ajinca's three-point efficiency will be tested against NBA-caliber athletes. At 6-foot-8, his defensive versatility is promising, and his year playing against seasoned European veterans could translate into better awareness and anticipation on both ends. He credits much of his improvement to learning alongside Maledon, who helped teach the nuances of spacing, ball movement, and quicker decision-making.

With the Mavericks holding just one remaining two-way contract slot, Ajinca will face legitimate competition in Vegas. But his unique combination of size, shooting and seasoning makes him a strong candidate for that final spot. Dallas values developmental upside, and Ajinca fits the mold.
The Mavericks open Summer League play on July 10 against the Lakers at 7 p.m. CT on ESPN, with Ajinca expected to play meaningful minutes alongside Flagg and two-way signees Ryan Nembhard and Miles Kelly.
After a year of growth in Europe's pressure-cooker environment, Ajinca returns to Las Vegas as a transformed player. With improved shooting, better decision-making, and the confidence of having contributed at the highest level overseas, he's poised to be one of the summer's biggest shocks for fans. The cousin of a former Maverick might just become the breakout story of Dallas's Summer League run.

(Photo by) Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner have won the last six Grand Slam men's singles titles, and a former world No. 2 says they are 'light years away" from the rest of the men on the ATP Tour. 'No one can be behind Jannik and Carlos,' Goran Ivanisevic, a former world No. 2 and the 1991 Wimbledon champion, said in an interview with Clay via "Only [Novak]He added: "This is tough; many train knowing they won't win a Slam. They're playing at a different level. Just look at the Roland Garros final. The others are far behind. Just see what happened in Australia. [Alexander] Zverev, number 3, was far off. The only one who can do it is Novak." No. 3 Zverev, No. 9 Daniil Medvedev (a former U.S. Open champion) and No. 24 Tsitsipas all lost in the first round at Wimbledon. Sinner won this year's Australian Open and then Alcaraz came from two sets down to beat the Italian in an epic Roland Garros final. They are the top two favorites to win Wimbledon, but Ivanisevic believes No. 6 Novak Djokovic, the 38-year-old 24-time major champ, is the favorite despite losing the last two finals to Alcaraz. 'He has beaten Sinner twice here, and in 2023, we know how close he was to winning against Carlos,' Ivanisevic said. "Last year, he had a knee problem. He is the best player on this surface. I don't see why he wouldn't play until 2028." LONDON, ENGLAND - JUNE 24: Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece speaks with his coach Goran Ivanisevic, ... (Photo by) As for Tsitsipas, the former French Open (2021) and Australian Open finalist (2023), Ivanisevic was remarkably frank in his critique of the player he has been coaching. "I already expected that Wimbledon wouldn't go well for him," he said. "He's not in shape. Plain and simple. Neither mentally nor physically. His situation is straightforward; if he makes changes, especially off the court, he can come back, but if he doesn't, no one can help him. "I can help him with tennis-related matters, but the things off the court, that's something only he can do. He needs to address those things as soon as possible. His biggest problem is his backhand, especially the slice. Technically, he needs to adjust his grip a bit more, and he also needs to work on his return. He has been changing rackets frequently; that needs to change. On his serve, he rotates his body too much and should bring his feet together a bit more. "The off-court situation is what causes him the most problems. That is what truly matters." As for his off-court situation, Tsitsipas recently broke up with former girlfriend Paula Badosa, the world No. 9 who also lost in the first round.

Transfer news, rumors: Gyokeres to Arsenal; Kudus to Chelsea, Spurs
The transfer news from around the Premier League is showing no signs of slowing down with the big boys spending plenty to strengthen their squads. Below is a look at the latest transfer news from across the Premier League, with some huge deals developing. Advertisement Viktor Gyokeres to Arsenal is in the works According to a report from Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal are in talks to sign Sporting Lisbon and Sweden striker Viktor Gyokeres. Per the report Gyokeres, 27, will not return for preseason with Sporting and Arsenal have held new talks to sign him. Romano adds: "Arsenal are now getting closer to signing Gyokeres... Arsenal are now advancing. Nothing done yet but discussions underway." Okay, so, this is getting closer and Arsenal look like they're going to have a summer transfer window for the ages. Having already signed Kepa and Martin Zubimendi, they are also going to add Christian Norgaard in midfield to add depth. The Gunners have been linked with moves for Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke too and if they can get all of these moves over the line they will be right up there with the favorites to win the Premier League and Champions League this season. As for Gyokeres specifically, it feels like he's the final piece of the jigsaw. This feels very much like Manchester City adding Erling Haaland. Arsenal create so many chances each game but have lacked that clinical finisher who makes the difference in big moments. Gyokeres is that finisher. He can hold the ball up and link up play well but the main reason Mikel Arteta needs him is to be in the box in the right places to finish off chances or use his frame to create chaos and space for others to finish. Gyokeres would give Arsenal's attack a new dimension and he is the one kind of player they've been missing in recent years. Advertisement Chelsea, Spurs working on Mohammed Kudus deal With West Ham United seemingly resigned to lose Mohammed Kudus in order to allow manager Graham Potter to have some funds to spend on new players this summer, both Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea are interested in the Ghanaian forward. According to David Ornstein Spurs have had a bid of $68 million turned down for Kudus but remain in talks with West Ham. But given Spurs' intense rivalry with West Ham, there is plenty of fan unrest over that deal happening. And according to Fabrizio Romano Chelsea are interested and have held talks with Kudus' agents. With Noni Madueke potentially leaving and Jadon Sancho heading back to Manchester United, Chelsea would technically be a winger short. Even though they have about 27 forwards... Where should Kudus go? Spurs would be a really good fit and Thomas Frank's style of play would suit him well. Would Kudus actually play at Chelsea? Even though Chelsea have added forwards Liam Delap and Joao Pedro and have young winger Estevao Willian arriving this summer too, they could still use Kudus in their rotation. This deal would also save face for West Ham as they'd rather sell Kudus to Chelsea than Spurs. But if Kudus wants to play regularly he should join Spurs.
