Export restrictions on rare earth magnets impacting supply chain bottlenecks
In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasad said, however, the commerce and industry ministry has not received any specific reports regarding cost escalation or project delays due to the shortage of rare earth magnets from the companies in Maharashtra's Aurangabad-Nashik-Pune auto belt and electronics clusters in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai.
'The recent imposition of export restrictions on key rare earth magnets has resulted in supply chain bottlenecks impacting the user industries, including auto and electronics sectors," he said.
China currently dominates the global rare earth magnet supply chain, controlling over 90 per cent of global processing capacity. These magnets are essential components across sectors like automobiles, household appliances, and renewable energy.
The Chinese government has mandated, from April 4 onwards, that special export licences be required for seven rare earth elements and associated magnets. PTI RR HVA

Chinese and U.S. trade officials arrived for a second day of meetings in the Swedish capital on Tuesday (July 29, 2025) to try to break a logjam over tariffs that have skewed the pivotal commercial ties between the world's two largest economies. But the conversations are constructive and they're going in the right direction.' Many analysts expect that the Stockholm talks, at a minimum, will result in an extension of current tariff levels that are far lower than the triple-digit percentage rates as the U.S.-China tariff tiff crescendoed in April, sending world markets into a temporary tailspin. The two sides backed off the brink during bilateral talks in Geneva in May and agreed to a 90-day pause — which is set to end on Aug. 12 — of those sky-high levels. They currently stand at U.S. tariffs of 30% on Chinese goods, and China's 10% tariff on US products. Other issues on the agenda include access of American businesses to the Chinese market; Chinese investment in the U.S.; components of fentanyl made in China that reach U.S. consumers; Chinese purchases of Russian and Iranian oil; and American steps to limit exports of Western technology, like chips that help power artificial intelligence systems. Wendy Cutler, a former U.S. trade negotiator and now vice president at the Asia Society Policy Institute, said that Mr. Trump's team would face challenges from 'a large and confident partner that is more than willing to retaliate against US interests.' Rollover of tariff rates 'should be the easy part,' she said, warning that Beijing has learned lessons since the first Trump administration and 'will not buy into a one-sided deal this time around.' Andhra CM seeks AI Singapores cooperation to establish innovation centres
Amaravati, Jul 29 (PTI) Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Tuesday sought cooperation from AI Singapore to set up Artificial Intelligence research and innovation centres in the state. As part of an endeavour to develop the southern state as an emerging AI hub, the chief minister met professor Mohan Kankanahalli, deputy executive chairman, AI Singapore. "Naidu, committed to developing Andhra Pradesh as an emerging Artificial Intelligence hub, continued focused efforts during his third day in Singapore. On Tuesday, he met with Prof. Mohan Kankanahalli seeking their cooperation to set up AI research and innovation centers in the state," said an official release. Stressing the importance of prioritising partnerships between AI Singapore and universities and research institutions in Andhra Pradesh, Naidu proposed launching AI training programmes, exchange initiatives and skill development modules for students across the state. Deliberations chiefly revolved around the use of AI in sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, education, and public services. The CM and Kankanahalli explored opportunities in technology promotion, deep tech, and AI innovation, the release said. Further, the TDP supremo also met with NG Lin Wilin, senior vice president of SIA Engineering to deliberate on the upcoming airports in the state and sought cooperation for Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) services. Naidu briefed the SIA representatives on the TDP-led NDA government's newly introduced industry-friendly policies while showcasing the wide-ranging opportunities in the aviation sector. He invited the company to visit Andhra Pradesh to explore potential investments. Responding positively, Wilin assured that a delegation would be sent to the state soon, the release said. The Andhra Pradesh government is keen to establish a world-class MRO centre by leveraging the expertise and technology of companies such as SIA Engineering.
