Production-wise, what will we see from Indianapolis Colts' rookie running back DJ Giddens this season?
Mike Clay of ESPN recently put the 25 drafted running backs into tiers based on what he expects their role to be. And with that, he also projected what each running back's production totals in 2025 might look like.
For Giddens, he fell into the 'Situational backs and backups' category. GM Chris Ballard said at the NFL combine that the Colts needed more production from the backup running back position this season, but Jonathan Taylor is still going to shoulder the workload.
"Giddens has a solid frame and showed off his athleticism at the combine, with the second-best vertical (39½ inches) and broad jump (10-foot-10) among RBs," wrote Clay. "He was solid in terms of his efficiency as a collegiate rusher, but he struggled with drops and might max out as an early-down option."
As far as Giddens' production goes, Clay projects that he will rush for 201 yards on 48 carries with two touchdowns. In the passing game, he will catch seven passes for 49 yards.
Perhaps I'm a little too bullish on Giddens, but those production numbers feel light all around. 48 carries on the season is less than three per game. As mentioned, Taylor will continue to be a workhorse back, but I do think there are more opportunities out there than 2-3 carries a game.
Also competing with Giddens for that backup role will be Khalil Herbert, whose experience may give him an advantage. But Giddens packs too much big-play potential not to have the ball in his hands when Taylor isn't in the game.
"It's competition, for sure," Giddens said. "Everybody coming in -- I'm coming in to start -- that's what everybody's mindset is. But whatever it is, I'm gonna keep working, so I'm not trippin'.
"That's just how I am. I just ain't scared of competition. I'll play my role, and as long as I'm making an impact on the team, that's all that matters."
In the passing game, like any rookie back, as Ballard pointed out, Giddens will have to improve in pass protection, and doing so will be important when it comes to seeing snaps on passing downs.
However, it's not as if there is a clear-cut pass-catching option on the roster at running back either for the Colts. This was an element that was mostly non-existent on offense for Indianapolis last season.
So again, I think there are more opportunities out there for Giddens than what is being projected, and more opportunities means more production.
"He's going to hit his ceiling in the passing game," said Colts' area scout Tyler Hughes via the Indy Star. "He's shown enough on tape, as far as a receiver, where he can make guys miss in the open field and run some routes and catch the ball reliably."

Petr Yan: 'Competent win' at UFC on ABC 9 should get me Dvalishvili vs. Sandhagen winner

ABU DHABI – Petr Yan thinks getting his hand raised in a non-controversial fashion at UFC on ABC 9 will be enough to get the next bantamweight title shot. As former titleholder Yan (18-5 MMA, 10-4 UFC) readies for Saturday's matchup with Marcus McGhee (10-1 MMA, 4-0 UFC) at Etihad Arena on Yas Island (ABC, ESPN, ESPN+), the promotion has just announced the next 135-pound title bout between Merab Dvalishvili and Cory Sandhagen for UFC 320 on Oct. 4 in Las Vegas. If Yan takes cares of business this weekend, he said there is no one in the weight class who warrants a crack at the Dvalishvili (20-4 MMA, 13-2 UFC) vs. Sandhagen (18-5 MMA, 11-4 UFC) winner more than himself. "I am hoping for that," Yan told MMA Junkie through an interpreter at Wednesday's UFC on ABC 9 media day. "I think it's the right thing to do. I don't think there's anybody who is ranked higher that deserves this more than I do. I think with a competent win this Saturday, I'll make sure to cement my place as the next contender." Yan said he's intrigued to see how the title fight play out since he has history with both men. He lost a one-sided unanimous decision to Dvalishvili at UFC Fight Night 221 in March 2023, while beat Sandhagen on the scorecards in an interim title clash at UFC 267 in October 2021. He would welcome a rematch with either side, but considering he lost to Dvalishvili, that potential sequel is more compelling. "Definitely an interesting fight," Yan said. "Definitely will be watching it. I'm happy to be a backup if needed for this fight. I think that Merab is definitely going to push his rhythm, push his pace, push his style and make an uncomfortable style. But Sandhagen also has a chance. I think he has a chance to win." "It's very interesting to me to see what I would do in a fight against him. I now understand that in the five rounds we had, I probably threw my right hand four times. I'm interested to see how the fight would play out differently." First things first, Yan must get through McGhee, who hasn't been beaten inside the octagon yet and has plenty of motivation to pull off by far the biggest victory of his career. Yan has no intention to let that happen, however, and knows he can't fall into a trap of complacency against a lesser-ranked foe. "If I see the opportunity for it I'm definitely not going to shy away from a fire fight," Yan said. "I'm definitely going to stand and strike. I know I have the skills, so I'll be looking for openings and the opportunity to catch him and implement my game. Hopefully it works out and I'll knock him out."

Maryland football coach Mike Locksley admits he lost locker room due to NIL in 2024

Maryland football lost a ton of games in 2024, but Mike Locksley admitted he lost the locker room before those on-field losses. Speaking to ESPN on July 22, Locksley said he lost the locker room over which players he needed to compensate with NIL. That led to a 4-8 record, the worst since his first season in 2019 when the program finished 3-9. The Terrapins won just one conference game and lost each of the last five games of the season by at least 14 points. REQUIRED READING: Big Ten college football power rankings start with Penn State, Ohio State "I own the fact that I lost my locker room," Locksley told ESPN. "And this is Coach Locks, the locker room king, telling you this landscape, I had to choose between paying young players who were coming in or reward the older players that have been through the fire, three bowl wins, and I tried to do both with limited resources. And that's what you get: a locker room with the haves and have-nots." Following a 3-win season in 2019, the Terrapins went 2-3 in the COVID-19-impacted 2020 season. However, they went 23-16 between 2021 and 2023, which included three straight bowl victories. Maryland had not had three straight winning seasons since 2001-03. The program had never previously won bowl games in three straight seasons. Locksley called the 2024 season "a valuable lesson." "You go outside my locker room [now] and I have a sign that says: 'Leave your Louis belts, leave your financial statements and your car keys outside of this locker room, because in here we're all going to pay the same price for success or failure,'" Locksley said. "If I've got to put my desk in that locker room, I will. A valuable lesson learned." With the House settlement in place since July 1, Locksley said he has been able to focus more on the locker room this season rather than how much players are paid. He has a 33-41 record in his first six seasons with the Terrapins, and is 35-67 over his nine-year career as a head coach. "I call this a year of vulnerability for me, because I've been torn about what to say about our team when people ask; but I don't know what type of team we have yet," Locksley said. "Some people, as a coach, it's like a bad thing to say, 'I don't know.' But it's a good thing that I don't know."

Trey Hendrickson won't report for camp as contract saga continues with the Bengals

Cincinnati Bengals Pro Bowl defensive end Trey Hendrickson won't report for training camp on Tuesday with the rest of the team, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. Hendrickson posted a photo early Tuesday morning that he's in Florida. This decision not to report to Cincinnati comes a day after Bengals' owner Mike Brown spoke with optimism about a deal getting done with Hendrickson. 'I think it'll get done," Brown said on Monday. 'We like Trey as a person, he's a good guy but when it comes to these negotiations — and we've been through a few of them with him — he pushes hard,' Brown said. 'He gets emotional. We never have an easy time of it, but there's one thing that is consistent. It always gets done. And I think this one will, but we'll see. I've been proven wrong before, but I'm pretty confident that we'll get there at the end.' According to several reports, talks broke down between the Bengals and Hendrickson over guaranteed money. Schefter reported that the Bengals are only willing to offer one year of guaranteed money to Hendrickson. Myles Garrett, TJ Watt and Maxx Crosby have all received three years of guaranteed money from their respective teams. The Bengals will begin training camp without rookie first-round pick Shemar Stewart and Hendrickson on Wednesday. Hendrickson is under contract with the Bengals for the upcoming season but said he won't play for the Bengals on his current contract. And while the team certainly still has time to work things out with Hendrickson before the season begins in September, not having him or Stewart in training camp working with new defensive coordinator Al Golden is putting the team at a disadvantage.
