New Delhi: During a Municipal Corporation of Delhi's Standing Committee meeting on Friday, members highlighted concerns about inadequate monsoon preparedness and called for a detailed action plan.
Committee members questioned MCD's reported figures of silt removal from drains, noting that despite exceeding targets, waterlogging persists in their areas. Deputy chairman Sunders Singh tabled a short notice questioning the civic body's preparedness.
Sriniwaspuri councillor Rajpal Singh proposed establishing 24/7 control rooms with dedicated staff in all 12 zones to address public complaints.

Members also noted that other departments like PWD were conducting manual desilting and had appointed nodal officers, suggesting MCD implement similar measures.
In response, MCD Commissioner Ashawni Kumar reported that the civic body aimed to remove 26% more silt compared to last year from 800 drains between Jan and June 15. These drains span 530 km, with an allocated budget of Rs 3,599 lakh for desilting.
"Last year, we removed 1 lakh metric tons of silt. This year's target was 1.26 lakh metric tons, and we've already removed 1.56 lakh metric tons. Unlike other departments, we maintain proper records of silt dumped at landfills.
For smaller drains covering 6,069 km, our annual target was 40,000 metric tons, and we've achieved 37,000 tonnes," said the commissioner.
"However, waterlogging and drain cleaning are two separate issues. There are certain points where waterlogging occurs, and we have arranged pumps there. New pumps have been purchased, and existing ones have been repaired for such places.
Standing Committee Chairperson Satya Sharma assured that progress would be monitored and staff had been directed to enhance the city's monsoon preparedness.

The relentless monsoon has brought the State to its knees, leaving at least 16 people dead in the rain-related incidents, which include flash floods, drowning and electrocution, besides five people are still missing from June 20 till June 30. Around 35 houses have been fully or partially damaged, leaving several families homeless. The State had suffered a cumulative loss exceeding Rs 7,569 lakhs so far in the ongoing monsoon season, according to the State's Emergency Operation Center. In the past 24 hours, multiple cloud burst incidents in the State's Shimla, Mandi, and Kullu districts have been witnessed, following overnight rains that have left the State rivers in a spate. The incidents of cloud bursts and flash floods amid heavy rains have badly hit normal life across the State, resulting in loss of lives and property. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Tuesday (July 1, 2025) said there has been a loss of life and property due to overnight rain and cloudbursts in the areas of Karsog, Dharmpur, Mandi Sadar, Nachan, and Saraj, which is extremely painful and concerning. 'I am in constant contact with the district administration, continuously reviewing relief and rescue operations to ensure that prompt and effective assistance reaches those in need. I humbly request the people of the state to strictly follow the guidelines issued by the administration,' he said. In neighbouring States of Punjab and Haryana, several districts received widespread heavy rainfall, even as the joint capital Chandigarh also witnessed a heavy downpour.

Delhi News Live Updates: Ban on fuel sale to old cars begins, police teams deployed at petrol pumps

Delhi News Live Updates: On July 1, Delhi administration commenced the ban on fuel sale to old vehicles with immediate effect. Heavy security and traffic police teams have been deployed in petrol pumps across the national capital, and Automatic Number Plate reader cameras (ANPR) have been installed at 350 locations to identify such vehicles. The transport department has chalked out a detailed deployment plan involving personnel from its organisation, Delhi Police, Traffic Police and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). What is the new rule on old vehicles? As per the new rule, Delhi will no longer provide fuel to end-of-life (EoL) vehicles starting July 1 under the directions of Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM). This measure has been taken to curb air pollution in the city, with the air quality in Delhi dipping every year especially during winters. According to the CAQM directive, all EoL vehicles — including diesel vehicles older than 10 years and petrol vehicles older than 15 years — will be prohibited from being refuelled in Delhi, irrespective of their state of registration. Rain likely in Delhi today: After two days of moderate to heavy rains in the capital, light showers are expected in Delhi on Tuesday, forecast the India Meteorological Department. A yellow alert has been issued in the city, and IMD has forecast a generally cloudy sky with light to moderate rain, thunderstorms, and lightning. The minimum temperature in Delhi settles at 25.2 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, with light drizzling recorded in the early hours of the day. It is likely that Delhi will witness isolated light rains in the afternoon and evening today. The Delhi government has installed Automatic Number Plate reader cameras (ANPR) at nearly 350 petrol pumps across the national capital for detection of such vehicles. The transport department has chalked out a detailed deployment plan involving personnel from its organisation, Delhi Police, Traffic Police and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). Multiple teams of transport department, traffic police and local police have been deployed at different petrol pumps in South Delhi. (PTI)

One killed, nine missing in multiple cloudbursts in Himachal Pradesh's Mandi

Shimla: One person was reportedly killed and at least nine people went missing in multiple cloudbursts overnight in Karsog division of Himachal Pradesh's Mandi district, officials said on Tuesday. The cloudbursts triggered flash floods that washed away many houses. At least 41 people have been rescued by the district administration and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF). According to reports, 10 houses and a bridge were swept away by floods in Kuklah. In Mandi district, the 16-MW Patikari Hydro-Electric Power Project has also been washed away. The run-of-the-river power project is built on the Bakhli Khad, a left-bank tributary of the Beas river. Owing to the heavy inflow of water, 150,000 cusecs of water have been released from the Pandoh Dam. The situation turned critical as the downpour in the Beas upper catchment led to a sharp increase in inflow at Pandoh Dam. Locals and tourists have been strictly warned to stay away from the riverbanks. The 126-MW Larji Hydro Electric Project in Kullu also saw an abnormal rise in water discharge. Owing to heavy rain, Mandi District Magistrate Apoorv Devgan ordered the closure of all schools and educational institutions in the district on Tuesday as a precautionary step. Torrential rain continued across the state, resulting in flash floods. A day earlier, a five-storey building collapsed in the suburbs of Shimla city. However, no lives were lost, as residents had vacated the building. The state suffered a loss of Rs 75.69 crore till Monday due to torrential rain that has occurred across the state in the past 10 days. As per the Revenue Department, the state has witnessed 23 deaths as a result of flash floods, cloudbursts, drowning, etc, from June 20 to June 30. Also, 259 link roads across the state remain closed, while 614 distribution transformers and 144 water supply schemes across the state remain disrupted.
