Danny Jordaan must leave, says former Chiefs and Bafana captain

Former Bafana Bafana captain Lucas Radebe said Danny Jordaan should not consider serving another term as South African Football Association (Safa) president.
Jordaan has served three terms since he was first elected as president of Safa in 2013. Although the 73-year-old stated that he was serving his last term, he recently admitted that he would not refuse the opportunity to serve a fourth term.
Meanwhile, Radebe is working diligently behind the scenes to prepare himself for his long-time dream of becoming Safa president. The former Bafana skipper believes that Jordaan should not consider running for another term.
'He shouldn't even be there at this stage, it's long overdue that he leaves,' the former Leeds United captain told the Sowetan .
'He should give others a chance. I followed the conversation [in parliament] and it seems they [Safa] want to reason [that] they don't see anyone who can succeed him. It's all politics.'
The Bafana Bafana legend has been very vocal on getting Jordaan out and allowing young candidates to lead the association. In 2024, Radebe revealed that he was eyeing the presidential seat at Safa.
'Absolutely, I am equipping myself and there are a lot of people that I'm talking to that are helping me with the right and relevant information. That will assist me to be ready one day,' Radebe said.
'I don't have that attitude of telling myself that I know what to do or know better because I'm Lucas and all of that.
'Yes, some of the issues [happening at Safa] I think that they are personal. But to be honest, we should be going there. We should be working towards bringing people closer together.
'Because for me, the most important thing is leaving a legacy more than anything else, and bringing progress to our football,' Radebe said.

Steenhuisen stuns Mzansi with DA's decision on GNU

Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhuisen says the party will remain in the Government of National Unity (GNU) despite the axing of Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry Andrew Whitfield. However, the DA's Federal Executive has resolved to withdraw from the National Dialogue with immediate effect. In a media briefing, Steenhuisen accused the African National Congress (ANC) of displaying double standards and abusing its power. He warned that the DA's withdrawal from the GNU would have disastrous consequences for the country. Steenhuisen stated that DA members of the executive have remained focused on delivering for South Africans. However, he slammed Ramaphosa for not doing the same. 'Instead of upholding the wishes of the people by working in a respectful and collaborative manner with all partners in the GNU, the ANC has repeatedly undermined these principles. Time and again, it has slapped away the hand of substantive cooperation and co-creation in favour of arrogant and narrow political self-interest,' said Steenhuisen. Steenhuisen also criticised Ramaphosa for ignoring a 48-hour ultimatum issued by the DA following Whitfield's dismissal, calling on him to act against corruption within the ANC. 'If the ANC does not urgently change the way it engages with its coalition partners so that we can fight corruption and start growing the economy, then they imperil the future of the country and its people,' he warned. He emphasised that the DA has acted in the best interests of South Africa since the formation of the GNU, and called on Ramaphosa and the ANC to do the same. Many South Africans took to social media to express their disappointment with the DA's announcement. On X, several users shared that they had expected the party to withdraw entirely from the GNU. Others also questioned the DA's credibility and whether its actions matched its rhetoric. WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE DA'S DECISION TO REMAIN IN THE GNU? Malema pledges EFF support for Mthatha flood victims

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has vowed to support communities affected by recent floods in Mthatha and criticised government delays in responding to the crisis. Speaking during a visit to the flood-hit region on Saturday, 28 June, Malema said government officials were slow to act, despite the floods claiming lives and destroying infrastructure. 'After more than 100 people died, the army only came after the fence,' Malema said. 'If there's a disaster, it means there's an emergency. We can't keep calling meetings. We must meet people on the ground and help.' Malema condemned authorities for holding meetings instead of providing immediate aid and promised that the EFF would help families bury their loved ones with dignity. Malema said the EFF would assist bereaved families whose loved ones died in the floods. According to The Citizen , he also promised to confront any traditional, municipal or police who interfered with burial rights. 'No one should be refused a burial,' he said. 'We will make sure everyone who needs to be buried is buried.' He also raised concerns over families, especially those with young children, who had been denied access to temporary shelters, and some even turned away from churches. 'We cannot have children sleeping under trees,' Malema said. 'Let's find them a wall, a church or a school. Let's go back and plead with the church to accommodate these people while we work on urgent solutions.' Malema urged affluent South Africans, especially Black business leaders and major foundations, to help communities affected by the floods. 'Where is the Motsepe Foundation when parents are asking for clothes for children?' he asked. He contrasted the lack of support in Mthatha with relief efforts in wealthy areas like Cape Town. 'In Cape Town, when there was a disaster, companies sent food, clothes, everything. Why not here?' The EFF leader stressed that victims need more than just basic relief. 'The disaster washed away the clothes, furniture and belongings of our people. Let's help them rebuild their lives.' He added that women especially need sanitary pads, toiletries and clothing. Malema praised the women leading local relief centres, calling them strong leaders who must continue to speak truthfully about their communities' needs. 'Don't lie to receive food. Speak the truth. Sponsors who want lies are not welcome,' he said. He urged communities to maintain honesty and transparency: 'Where there are issues, please speak to us.' Sorry, not sorry? Floyd Shivambu apologises over 'drugs' allegations

Floyd Shivambu has issued a back-handed apology to MK Party spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela, whom he accused of abusing drugs and alcohol. The former secretary-general made a public apology after he was served with a legal letter of demand and another to appear in court for defamation. At a press conference last week, Floyd mentioned another MK Party member – supposedly Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla – who he claimed 'took drugs and tweeted at night'. He has since claimed that his comments were not directed at her. Speaking at the Mayibuye Consultation Process dialogue on Friday, 27 June, Floyd Shivambu addressed his comments about his fellow MK Party colleague. 'I must unconditionally retract the statements about drug use and alcohol abuse of Nhlamulo Ndhlela'. However, he added, 'But we take this opportunity to encourage all the people of South Africa to stay away from drugs and alcohol. If they are members of parliament or leaders of different political parties. 'Drugs will never build you, they will make a lot of mistakes'. Floyd Shivambu's apology comes hours after Nhlamulo Ndhlela posted a screenshot of his court summons over his claims of defamation. On Wednesday, Nhlamulo posted a letter of demand addressed to Floyd, demanding a public apology, retraction of comments, and a warning to cease defamatory comments. In an interview with eNCA earlier this week, Floyd Shivambu took aim at Nhlamulo Ndhlela, whom he labelled a 'imbecile' and a 'foolish leader of the MK Party'. He said: 'He's [Ndhlela] always on drugs and always high on alcohol in terms of how he deals with issues.' Floyd also accused Nhlamulo of spreading misinformation about him. He continued: 'He will use the otherwise very gullible and directionless daughter of President Zuma, who has front-row access to him by virtue of being his daughter.'
