Danny Jordaan must leave, says former Chiefs and Bafana captain

Former Bafana Bafana captain Lucas Radebe said Danny Jordaan should not consider serving another term as South African Football Association (Safa) president. Jordaan has served three terms since he was first elected as president of Safa in 2013. Although the 73-year-old stated that he was serving his last term, he recently admitted that he would not refuse the opportunity to serve a fourth term. Meanwhile, Radebe is working diligently behind the scenes to prepare himself for his long-time dream of becoming Safa president. The former Bafana skipper believes that Jordaan should not consider running for another term. 'He shouldn't even be there at this stage, it's long overdue that he leaves,' the former Leeds United captain told the Sowetan . 'He should give others a chance. I followed the conversation [in parliament] and it seems they [Safa] want to reason [that] they don't see anyone who can succeed him. It's all politics.' The Bafana Bafana legend has been very vocal on getting Jordaan out and allowing young candidates to lead the association. In 2024, Radebe revealed that he was eyeing the presidential seat at Safa. 'Absolutely, I am equipping myself and there are a lot of people that I'm talking to that are helping me with the right and relevant information. That will assist me to be ready one day,' Radebe said. 'I don't have that attitude of telling myself that I know what to do or know better because I'm Lucas and all of that. 'Yes, some of the issues [happening at Safa] I think that they are personal. But to be honest, we should be going there. We should be working towards bringing people closer together. 'Because for me, the most important thing is leaving a legacy more than anything else, and bringing progress to our football,' Radebe said. Lucas Radebe says Danny Jordaan must leave Safa

The SA Football Association (Safa) will report a R5m deficit when it conducts its long-awaited ordinary congress this weekend, painting a picture of an organisation in dire financial straits. The constant reports of alleged financial and administrative disarray at Safa prompted legendary Bafana Bafana captain Lucas Radebe to say Danny Jordaan should step down as the association's president. According to the latest financial report, prepared by Safa financial committee chair Mxolisi Sibam, the main reasons for the challenging financial position are high bonuses paid to national teams and spiralling staff costs due to enormous salaries. As a result, Safa's 'liquidity remains tight' and this could lead to 'potential solvency risks'. 'The largest expenditure item was the R150m (or 40% of revenue) paid in performance bonuses to players and technical staff,' reads Sibam's report for the financial year ending June 2024. . However, Safa received R160m from the Confederation of African Football (Caf) and Fifa as participation fees for Bafana Bafana and Banyana Banyana in last year's Africa Cup of Nations and the 2023 Women's World Cup, respectively, taking its turnover to R386m, which was an increase from R239m in 2023. Sibam's report further states Safa pays high salaries to its staff but curiously remains silent on the bloated national executive committee, which Fifa recommended more than a decade ago it must be trimmed 'It is also important to note that salaries and remuneration within the association remain relatively high when benchmarked against other comparable national football associations. The finance committee has identified this as an area requiring review to ensure sustainability and efficiency,' reads the report. Safa will report a 17% increase in assets to R193m, but Sibam states that liabilities remain a problem. 'Total liabilities rose to R207m from R172m in 2023, while current liabilities increased to R197m.' Posted by Newzroom Afrika on Tuesday, June 3, 2025 Saturday's congress comes two weeks after Safa's leadership was grilled in parliament over allegations of misgovernance. At the weekend, Bafana legend Radebe said Jordaan, who has been in office since 2013, should not consider serving another term as the association's president. 'He shouldn't even be there at this stage, it's long overdue that he leaves,' the former Leeds United captain told Sowetan. 'He should give others a chance. I followed the conversation [when Safa reported to the sports portfolio committee in parliament this month] and it seems they [Safa] want to reason that they don't see anyone who can succeed him. It's all politics.' Radebe said that while South Africa was seeing great performances from national teams, such as the Under-20s, who recently lifted the junior African Cup of Nations for the first time, that energy was not matched by delivery in Safa's administration under Jordaan's leadership. 'We are performing on the field but are lacking in the office. We know exactly where change is needed,' he said.

Radebe calls for leadership change at Safa, reflects on Kaizer Chiefs and cancer run

South African footballing great Lucas Radebe believes Safa needs to inject new ideas into the running of the sport in the country. Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix Lucas Radebe remains interested in getting involved in the administration of South African football and believes it would be a travesty if Danny Jordaan were to stand for yet another term as president of the country's governing body. The former Bafana Bafana captain, who previously tried to challenge Jordaan but was curtailed by Safa rules requiring that he be a member of the association's structures, says the local game is in need of administrative change. 'I think it is long overdue,' he said, during an interview in Soweto, where he had just finished running the Discovery Run For Cancer Rave with Orlando Athletics Club. 'I believe there are leaders out there, and all that's needed is for them to be given a chance. Let's get together and see who can take (the leadership) on.' Video Player is loading. Obviously, they (the current Safa leadership) say they don't see somebody who will succeed him — it's all politics. "I believe there's a lot we can do, a lot that can be established. The thing is, our football is good on the pitch; it shows where we are lacking — upstairs, that's where the change needs to be.' The man fondly referred to as Rhoo believes he is ready to take South African football forward. 'I've always wanted to be a part of South African football on a stage where I can make a difference because I believe we've served the country so long," said Radebe. "The game has done us well, too, to get us to where we are. But why can't they give us a chance to do something for the game that we love and get it to where it should be?' Samuel Eto'o of Cameroon. Photo: AFP Image: AFP Radebe agrees that South Africa should learn from the likes of Cameroon, who are led by their former star player Samuel Eto'o as FA president. 'That should happen. I think the most important thing is us uniting as ex-footballers — coming together, agreeing, and sharing a vision for the game. Those technicalities about having to be in the local football associations — they're just finding something to lock the gates and lock us out. I believe change will happen, and we will get a different leadership.' A former Kaizer Chiefs captain, Radebe is pleased that Amakhosi have finally won a trophy after 10 years without silverware. 'They've won a trophy, and it can only get better," Radebe said. "They must give the coach (Nasreddine Nabi) this season and see whether he's good for the club or not, because it does not help to keep changing coaches — it destabilises the club. They just need to bring in quality players to strengthen the squad.'

ANC KZN leaders criticise councillors over municipal failures

KwaZulu Natal ANC task team convener Jeff Radebe speaking at the ANC KZN Alliance Local Government and Service Delivery Summit held in Coastlands Hotel on Durban's South Beach on Sunday. Image: Doctor Ngcobo / Independent Newspapers The ANC leadership in KwaZulu-Natal has read the riot act to councillors regarding the state of municipalities in the province, warning that elected officials must take their oversight responsibilities seriously. Going forward, they will be held accountable for governance failures in councils, the leadership warned. ANC convener Jeff Radebe called on councillors to be well-informed about council matters. He stated that active participation is vital for transparency, efficient service delivery, and curbing corruption and mismanagement at the local level. Radebe made these remarks while delivering his address at the Alliance Local Government and Service Delivery Summit this weekend. 'The ANC must take stock of the state of governance in our municipal councils. The 2026 municipal elections are upon us. We have so little time and so much work to do,' Radebe said. 'We gather at a time when our municipalities are at a crossroads. Progress is evident, yes, but so too are the challenges that will test our collective resolve. As leadership, we share the responsibility of turning this situation around,' he continued. He detailed some of the challenges, noting that capital expenditure stood at R4.8 billion (31.9%) lower than the 50% target. Conditional grants to municipalities totalled R8.2 billion, with only R3.6 billion (36.7%) spent. The critical Municipal Infrastructure Grant of R3.6 billion had only been spent by 39.7%, while the Water Services Infrastructure Grant of R1.1 billion had only been spent by 44.1%. These statistics are shocking. This is a sorry tale,' he continued. 'Urgent intervention is required in debt management, budget accuracy, and compliance with financial reporting requirements. Let us raise the critical oversight and monitoring responsibilities of Exco members and councils. Exco councillors are part of the political executive and are responsible for policy implementation and oversight of specific portfolios, similar to Ministers and MECs. 'Each Exco councillor oversees a specific department and is individually responsible for monitoring departmental performance and ensuring alignment with the Integrated Development Plan and Budget,' said Radebe. He emphasised that councillors are responsible for monitoring service delivery, ensuring that services are delivered efficiently and effectively in line with municipal policies. Mayors and councils must report regularly on departmental performance and intervene when targets are not met, he said. Councillors must take immediate action on remedial measures once they identify problems in service delivery or maladministration, Radebe stated emphasising that they represented the broader public and act as a bridge between communities and the municipality. 'Every ANC cadre who serves as a councillor must engage with residents to report service delivery issues. You must facilitate community meetings, report back, and channel community concerns into council processes through your ANC Caucus. You must ensure that these concerns are addressed by the municipality in which you serve,' he added.

Kaizer Chiefs have released 25-year-old midfielder Sabelo Radebe. The club has released a statement regarding the release of Sabelo Radebe. He got his first taste of senior football at the club in 2017-2028. He only had two Betway Premiership outings this season. He's only notched a total of 18 appearances for Chiefs. 'Radebe, now 25, joined Amakhosi as a teenager. He progressed through the junior ranks in the Kaizer Chiefs Youth Development Academy before moving up to the reserve team in the 2017-18 season,' the statement read. 'He signed after earning a spot in the senior team in the 2020/21 season, following an impressive performance in the DStv Diski Challenge. 'Last season, he had a one-year loan spell at KwaZulu-Natal-based Richards Bay FC.' According to FARPost, Chiefs' PSL rivals Stellenbosch won't be pursuing Asanele Velebayi as they already have a winger of a similar profile in the shape of Langelihle Phili.
