Those committed wrongs in Jal Shakti Mission work won't be spared: Patil
Asserting that any contractor or anyone who had committed wrongs in implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) will not be spared, Jal Shakti Minister C R Patil said Thursday that 92 per cent of teams of Central Nodal Officers deputed for 'ground inspection' of the rural tap water schemes have submitted their reports and the remaining are expected to do so by end of this month.
Addressing a press conference on achievements of his ministry on completion of the NDA government's 11 years, Patil said, 'Out of 119 teams constituted, 111 teams have completed their survey work. 89 of them have submitted their reports and work is going on the same. I think that the remaining teams are expected to submit their resorts by 30 [June]. Out of the total teams deployed, 92 per cent have submitted their reports, only 8 per cent are yet to do so.'
Patil said that anyone who has committed any wrong will not be spared.
'hamne pahle Lok Sabha me bhi kaha tha, aap ko bhi batata hun… ye jo nal se jal ki yojana hai vah samanya aadmi ke ghar me paani dene ki baat hai. (I have said in Lok Sabha before and I reiterate it now. The tap water scheme is aimed at providing drinking water to the common man's house. If any contractor or anyone else commits any wrong, we will not spare anyone),' Patil said, responding to a question.
Patil said that he had made it clear and this is the reason that the government had deployed over 100 teams of Central Nodal Officers for ground inspection of the JJM schemes. On May 19, the Centre had announced sending 100 teams for 'ground inspection' of the Jal Jeevan Mission schemes across the country. The move follows a meeting chaired by the Cabinet Secretary on May 8 to review the mission's schemes. Later, some more teams were added to the initial list of the teams.
Patil said that the states have also been told that there should not be any complaints where tap is installed but no water is available. It has been conveyed to the state governments that if the source of water has dried, it must create another source with their own money and ensure supply of water, he said.
Patil's remarks are significant in view of ongoing scrutiny of the JJM amid concerns over rising costs. Since the launch of the Jal Jeevan Mission in 2019, 6.4 lakh water supply schemes with total estimated cost of Rs 8.29 lakh crore—more than double of the scheme's original outlay of Rs 3.60 lakh crore (Centre: Rs 2.08 lakh crore, States:1.52 lakh crore) — have been approved by the states.
On May 21, The Indian Express reported that an investigation of the data uploaded by states and UTs on the Jal Jeevan Mission dashboard showed that a crucial change in tender guidelines three years ago lifted the check on expenditure, and led to cost escalations. This resulted in additional costs totalling Rs 16,839 crore for 14,586 schemes, an increase of 14.58% from their estimated cost.
On a query regarding the recent remarks made by Pakistan Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Indus water, Patil said that India is not afraid of false threats. 'Aisi geedar dhamkiyon se to hum nahin darte. (We are not afraid of false threats),' he said.
Patil said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has decided to keep in abeyance the Indus Water Treaty and it will remain in abeyance. 'Water won't go anywhere… Water will remain in India,' he said.

Narayana vows safe drinking water across all civic bodies
Vijayawada: Municipal administration and urban development minister P Narayana said the state government is determined to provide safe drinking water to households across all municipalities. Addressing the media after a review meeting chaired by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu at CM camp office on Saturday, the minister stated that tenders have been invited for laying drinking water pipelines to cover 85 per cent of households, with support from the AMRUT scheme. He said Rs 5,350 crore, sanctioned by the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, will be used for completing both drinking water and drainage projects. Blaming the previous YSRCP government for lapses in securing Central funds due to failure in releasing the state's share, Narayana stressed the new government's commitment to infrastructure development. On the solid waste issue, the minister said Andhra Pradesh generates 8,000 tonnes of waste daily. While waste-to-energy plants are already operational in Guntur and Visakhapatnam, six new plants are planned in Rajahmundry, Nellore, Kadapa, Kurnool, Vijayawada, and Tirupati. Once operational, they can convert up to 7,500 tonnes of garbage into power. An allocation of Rs 225 crore has been made for new garbage clearing equipment. He also said the government is working to distribute TIDCO houses by clearing Rs 140 crore in pending bank loans for the beneficiaries.

Chaos ensued after two trucks carrying materials for rituals reportedly entered the crowded spot near the chariots of Lord Jagannath and his sibling deities, officials said. When the three chariots reached their destination, a huge crowd of devotees gathered to have darshan of the deity, which lead to the collapse of the crowd barriers. As a result, several devotees fell over each other near the wheels of the chariot. The injured have been admitted to a nearby hospital, and the condition of six people is critical, he said. The deceased have been identified as Basanti Sahu from Bolagarh of Khorda district, Premakanti Mohanty, and Prabhati Das from Athantara village under Balianta block. The bodies have been sent for postmortem and an investigation is underway. Political leaders across parties and civil society members have urged the government to conduct a transparent inquiry and ensure such lapses do not recur. Major protest marks fee exploitation by private schools
Gadwal: In a show of resistance, student organisations came together on Saturday to protest the alleged fee exploitation and irregularities being carried out by private schools in Aiza Mandal of the Alampur constituency, Jogulamba Gadwal district. The protest rally, which began at Telangana Chowrasta and concluded at the New Bus Stand, saw students raising slogans and holding placards condemning what they described as 'commercialization of education.' Following the rally, a delegation of student leaders submitted a memorandum to the Mandal Revenue Officer (MRO), urging immediate intervention and strict action against erring schools, particularly the Sri Krishnaveni Private School, which was singled out for multiple alleged violations. Student leaders alleged that private schools in the region were collecting exorbitant and unregulated fees, in clear violation of the Right to Education (RTE) Act and existing fee regulation laws. They claimed that the Sri Krishnaveni School was forcing parents to purchase uniforms, textbooks, and notebooks at inflated prices from a shop operated illegally beside the school. The school's management had set up a fake certificate-backed book centre and was openly selling books on the roadside, yet no action was taken by education officials despite earlier complaints to the District Collector. The Mandal Education Officer (MEO) allegedly ignored direct instructions from the District Education Officer (DEO) to seize the illegal book stock, and even remarked that he would only take action 'if provided protection.' Furthermore, the students claimed that Bonafide and Transfer Certificates (TCs) were being issued only after collecting up to Rs 2,000 from Class 10 students. The school fee for Class 10 was increased from Rs 28,000 in the academic year 2024–25 to Rs 34,000 for 2025–26 without any justification. School staff, including drivers and teachers, were reportedly forced by the management to protest in front of the MEO office, allegedly with the support of the MEO himself. The situation escalated when student union leaders visited another school, Sri Chaitanya, after receiving reports about similar irregularities. They were allegedly assaulted by men linked to Krishnaveni School owner Madhusudan Reddy, who reportedly sent his drivers to threaten and attack the students. Demanding justice, the protestors urged the authorities to suspend the MEO for negligence and bias; cancel the recognition of Sri Krishnaveni School for repeated violations; file criminal charges against the school owner Madhusudan Reddy and the individuals involved in the assault; and enforce the RTE Act to ensure that 25% of seatsare reserved for underprivileged students.
