Apple News+ subscribers are getting an emoji game with iOS 26

Engadget10-06-2025
Apple is bundling its News+ subscriptions with a new game that users will be able to access when they get iOS 26. MacRumors has reported that Apple is calling it the "Emoji Game," because, well, it's all about using emoji to fill blanked-out letters in incomplete words and phrases. For the word "Disappear," for instance, you can use the "pear" emoji to complete it if the puzzle only shows its first five letters. For the phrase "rubbing elbows," you can use the "pink bows" emoji if the blank spaces correspond to "bows." The same emoji could have several meanings, as well: "Pear" can also be used to correspond to "fruit" in the word "fruitful," as an example.
It's a neat little game that people can play to pass the time, but it can only be accessed by those paying $13 a month for Apple News+. The subscription will give you access to magazines and newspapers, audio stories and regional publications, along with daily puzzles like the Emoji Game. It's pretty pricey, though like Apple's other services, users can share their subscription with up to six family members.
At the moment, only developers who already have iOS 26 beta will be able to play the Emoji Game. Apple's new mobile OS, which the company announced at WWDC, will be released to the public this fall. It will be compatible with all iPhones announced in 2019 or later, which means iPhone XR, iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max owners won't be able to install it anymore. In addition to adopting a new naming convention that's based on the year it's released, the upcoming version of iOS has undergone a major visual overhaul, with translucent user interfaces inspired by the look of visionOS.

Apple debuts AppleCare One service with protection for 3 devices for $19.99 per month

Apple (AAPL) has debuted a new version of its AppleCare service that will allow you to cover multiple devices for a single monthly rate. Available July 24, AppleCare One provides unlimited device repairs for things like drops and spills, battery replacements, tech support, and loss and theft protection for iPhones, iPads, and Apple Watches for $19.99 per month for three devices. You can add additional devices to the plan for $5.99 each. Apple says if you sign up for AppleCare One with an iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch, you'll save $11 per month over signing up for its existing AppleCare+ service for each separate device. To sign up for AppleCare One, you'll either have to purchase it at the same time you buy a new piece of Apple hardware, add it to a product you've purchased within the last 60 days, or upgrade to it from an active AppleCare+ plan. That means you can't just go out and sign up for the service for your old iPhone X. Once you've signed up for AppleCare One, though, you'll be able to add devices to your plan that are fewer than four years old and a part of your Apple Account, though they have to be in good condition. AppleCare One coverage will also automatically transfer from devices you trade in to your new devices, as long as they're tied to your Apple Account. AppleCare subscriptions fall under the company's Services segment, which also includes subscriptions like Apple TV+, Apple Music+, App Store sales, iCloud subscriptions, and payment services, including Apple Pay and the Apple Card. In 2024, Apple reported Services revenue of $96.1 billion, making it the company's second-largest business behind the iPhone, which brought in $201.1 billion of the company's $391 billion in total revenue. Apple also counts things like its search exclusivity deal with Google (GOOG, GOOGL) as part of its Services business. According to court documents, Google paid Apple $20 billion to be the default search engine for Apple's Safari browser. But that could soon go out the window. Judge Amit Mehta of the US District Court for the District of Columbia is expected to issue a ruling on "remedies" that follows the Justice Department's victory against Google in its antitrust suit against the company sometime next month. If Mehta rules that Google has to give up such exclusivity agreements, it could put a big dent in Apple's Services business. New offerings like AppleCare One, however, could help offset some of those losses. Email Daniel Howley at dhowley@ Follow him on X/Twitter at @DanielHowley.

Apple announces AppleCare One for covering multiple devices under one plan — starts at $19 a month

If you want to protect your Apple devices from accidents, theft and loss and get priority support, you can now can get coverage for multiple Apple products in one plan for one price. And you'll save a bit of money in the process. The new service is called AppleCare One, which builds on AppleCare+ by letting you protect up to three products tied to your Apple Account for $19.99 a month. It starts rolling out July 24. That's not a bad deal considering that AppleCare+ currently costs $11.99 a month for the iPhone 16 and $13.99 a month for the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max. So for a few bucks more per month, you can add your Apple Watch and iPad. Or your MacBook and AirPods Max. It's up to you. And if you want to protect more than three devices at once each additional device will cost you an extra $5.99 a month. Another plus is that AppleCare One can cover Apple products you already own up to 4 years old. Headphones need to be less than a year old, though. But at least you don't have to buy something new to add it to your plan. Apple will walk you through the steps virtually to see if your devices are eligible by checking if they're in "good condition." So you don't need to go to an Apple Store. For the first time, Apple is also extending theft and loss coverage to the Apple Watch and iPad. This will be available to AppleCare One and AppleCare+ customers. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Similar to AppleCare+, AppleCare One includes: Note that you cannot add devices from family members to AppleCare One — at least for now. They need to be tied to your specific Apple Account. To sign up for AppleCare One, you can sign up at or when purchasing a device at the Apple Store. In addition, you can enroll in AppleCare One right from the Settings app on your iPhone, iPad or Mac. If you trade-in your Apple device and upgrade with Apple, you can seamlessly transfer coverage to the new device. By signing up for AppleCare One, you can save a decent amount of money versus choosing AppleCare+ for multiple devices. For example, let's say you want to protect an iPhone 16 Pro, Apple Watch 10 and MacBook Pro M4. AppleCare One AppleCare Plus iPhone 16 Pro $19.99 a month $13.99 Apple Watch 10 Inclluded $2.49 MacBook Pro M4 (14-inch) Included $9.99 Total $19.99 $26.47 In this scenario, you'd save $6.48 a month. That's a pretty good deal considering you're getting the same amount of coverage. Overall, AppleCare One is a no-brainer for those who own multiple Apple devices. You'll save money versus buying AppleCare+ for several gadgets. I just wish a family could cover Apple devices form multiple Apple Accounts under one AppleCare One plan. Apple launches $19.99 monthly AppleCare One subscription with coverage for three devices

Apple announced on Wednesday that it's launching AppleCare One, a new $19.99 monthly subscription plan that includes coverage for up to three products. Customers can choose to add protection for more devices for $5.99 per month each. Until now, people have had to enroll their Apple devices into separate AppleCare+ plans if they wanted additional coverage for their products beyond the standard warranty. Now, the company is offering bundled coverage. AppleCare One includes all of the benefits of AppleCare+, including unlimited repairs for accidents like drops or spills, 24/7 support from Apple experts, and battery coverage. AppleCare One adds theft and loss protection beyond iPhone to also cover iPad and Apple Watch. For the first time ever, Apple is letting customers add AppleCare coverage to the Apple products they already own. With the new subscription plan, customers can add most products up to 4 years old if they are in good condition. To verify that a device is in 'good condition,' it may be required to undergo a diagnostic check using a customer's iPhone or iPad, or at an Apple Store, before being added to the plan. Image Credits:Apple 'AppleCare One pricing is the same regardless of the products that are covered, meaning a customer can enroll their iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch, and save up to $11 a month over enrolling in separate AppleCare+ plans for each device,' Apple explained in a press release. This means that if someone buys AppleCare One when they purchase a new MacBook Pro and add their iPhone to the plan, they will already be saving money by not having two separate AppleCare+ plans. Plus, they will get even more value if they include another device, like an Apple Watch. Only devices in the customer's Apple Account can be covered under AppleCare One, Apple says.
