Petronas invested RM25bil in Sarawak in 2024: Awang Tengah
Awang Tengah, who is also the Sarawak Minister for International Trade, Industry and Investment said these investments include nine first hydrocarbon discoveries and two major production milestones – the Kasawari field at Block SK316 and the Jerun field at Block SK408.
"Ongoing offshore development and exploration projects are in progress to ensure future energy security.
"Petronas is intensifying frontier exploration through data enrichment and strategic partnerships for seismic processing, reinforcing Sarawak's role in Malaysia's energy sector, supporting long-term energy security and economic growth," he said during his ministry's winding-up session at the State Legislative Assembly sitting here today.
Meanwhile, Awang Tengah said Sarawak recognises natural gas as a vital transition fuel in the global journey towards net-zero emissions and the state is committed to its responsible development.
He said the Sarawak Gas Roadmap leverages Sarawak's abundant natural gas resources, which constitute over 60 per cent of Malaysia's reserves, to drive industrialisation, improve energy security and attract sustainable investment.
"As part of this initiative, a RM100 million city gas trunkline in Bintulu will expand clean and affordable energy access for homes and businesses. The project is going to be implemented soon.
"Meanwhile, the RM1 billion Samalaju Pipeline will transport 300 million standard cubic feet (mmscf) per day of gas from Bintulu to Samalaju Industrial Park. The installation of this gas pipeline is expected to be completed by the end of 2025," he said.

Malaysia, Italy ink major deal on carbon capture and biochemical tech
ROME: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has confirmed that agreements between Petronas and Italy's ENI will spearhead one of the region's largest projects involving carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) and biochemical technologies. Anwar said the initiative is expected to grow further, with new interest from Japanese firms and Indonesia's state-owned oil company, Pertamina. "Once officially launched, this will become one of the largest projects in the region involving CCUS and biochemical technology between Petronas and ENI," he said. Anwar added that the project was aimed at building regional strength and would be expanded in collaboration with Indonesia, citing increasing cooperation between Pertamina and Petronas. He also said that Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba had expressed interest in having Japan involved in the project. Additionally, Anwar said Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) is working with several Italian firms, including APG, on the development of a cross-border power grid stretching from Vietnam to Singapore. "This is a project that also supports Asean cooperation initiatives," he said, highlighting the regional nature of the infrastructure. Anwar also said that a new agreement between Perodua and Magna Steyr on electric vehicle (EV) battery development is expected to be formalised by December this year. The Prime Minister is currently on an official visit to three countries, Italy, France, and Brazil, beginning July 1.

Penang open to renegotiating Karpal Singh Drive reclamation project
BATU KAWAN: The Penang government has expressed willingness to renegotiate the proposed land reclamation project off Karpal Singh Drive following concerns raised by the NGO ProtectKarpal. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow stated that the state remains committed to adhering to the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process before making any final decisions. Chow clarified that the public engagement session concluded on June 30, and the developer must address all concerns before proceeding. The project developer has until February next year to secure EIA approval. 'If approval is not granted, the project may not proceed. If approved, we are open to reviewing implementation methods to minimise environmental impact,' he said after officiating a new public market and hawker centre in Bandar Cassia. The ProtectKarpal group, consisting mainly of Karpal Singh Drive residents, raised objections regarding construction methods and environmental risks. They also urged the gazetting of the nearby Middle Bank as a marine sanctuary due to its ecological significance. Chow acknowledged these concerns, stating the state government is open to discussions despite an existing agreement between the Penang Development Corporation (PDC) and the developer. 'Adjusting the project scale may require compromises, particularly in land allocation, but balancing development and sustainability is crucial,' he added. The RM1 billion Jelutong landfill redevelopment, initiated in 2020, remains under scrutiny as environmental assessments continue. Meanwhile, the RM46 million Bandar Cassia public market and hawker centre project is set for completion by June 2027. - Bernama

Petronas to invest RM500 million a year in Sabah upstream O&G

At the 12th Sabah Oil, Gas and Energy Conference and Exhibition (SOGCE) 2025, Petronas Senior Vice President Datuk Bacho Pilong ( pic ) said the Semporna Basin will be renamed the Tawau Basin to reflect growing interest in Sabah's southeastern offshore prospects. The company will invest RM500 million annually until 2030 in basin exploration and development, including making 3D seismic data for Block SB505 freely available to qualified bidders. New exploration finds - Megah-1, Bilit Deep-1, and Zoisit-1 - could support domestic gas supply beyond 2030, while deepwater projects such as GK-GJE Phase 4 represent cross-border collaboration with Brunei.
