Uggah: More STEM education initiatives for Bukit Saban students

KUCHING (June 15): More initiatives will be introduced to promote STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education among students in the Bukit Saban constituency, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas. Uggah, who is also the Bukit Saban assemblyman, said the emphasis on STEM is timely given the growing demand for technical and professional talent, particularly in engineering, technology, and accounting. 'With Sarawak advancing into new economic sectors like the hydrogen economy, the aerospace industry, new airport development, and the Sarawak Gas Roadmap programme, we will certainly require more skilled manpower in these areas. 'Potential investors looking at Sarawak will also assess our ability to provide the necessary talent pool,' he added during a presentation ceremony of his annual study incentives to 12 undergraduates and six diploma students from his constituency here today in which a similar presentation will be held in Spaoh tomorrow. According to Uggah, these developments are expected to generate numerous job opportunities for Sarawakians. As such, priority under the state's free tertiary education initiative, particularly at local institutions, will be given to students pursuing studies in STEM-related fields. He also encouraged students to continue striving for higher academic achievements. 'We already have a number of PhD holders from here. If they can do it despite facing various challenges, I am confident many others can follow in their footsteps,' he said. He added that quality education opens doors to better career prospects and an improved quality of life. Meanwhile, touching on the planned Yayasan Sarawak International School for the Betong Division, Uggah expressed appreciation to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for approving the project. He said the school would feature a curriculum distinct from that of regular schools, with a strong emphasis on mathematics and science aligning closely with the state's push for STEM education. 'I hope our students will prepare themselves and develop a strong passion for these two subjects in order to qualify for admission,' he said. Petros to award offshore CCUS contracts by Q2
KUCHING: Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros) plans to award contracts to the successful bidders of three offshore sites for carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) by the second quarter of this year. Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said Petros is currently finalising the agreements with the successful bidders for the offshore storage sites. "Petros, as the appointed resource manager, launched the Sarawak Bid Round 2024, offering three offshore storage sites with significant geological potential," Awang Tengah, who is also the state international trade, industry and investment minister, said in his winding-up speech in the State Legislative Assembly here today. He said Petros, together with investors, has committed over RM100 million to assess Sarawak's carbon storage potential and build a comprehensive database. "These efforts will create a globally competitive carbon storage portfolio, fortifying Sarawak's expertise, investment appeal and sustainable low-carbon economic growth," he said. He said Sarawak is poised to lead regional CCUS efforts, leveraging over 65 per cent of Malaysia's geological carbon storage potential. He said Sarawak is at the forefront of national and regional decarbonisation efforts, driving sustainable solutions and enhancing its pivotal role in the global low-carbon economy. Awang Tengah also said that Petros has expanded its upstream operations with 21 production sharing contracts, including 12 exploration projects and equity in five producing fields, achieving 100,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day. "The SK433 Adong Kecil West site in Miri will produce its first onshore oil next year," he said. Awang Tengah said the state oil company has committed RM8.5 billion in capital expenditure over the next three years for infrastructure development and resource commercialisation. He said that by 2030, the Sarawak Gas Roadmap (SGR) is expected to attract RM60 billion in investments and contribute significantly to Sarawak's economy. He said the initiatives reinforce Sarawak's leadership in sustainable energy, driving economic growth while advancing global decarbonisation efforts.

Petronas invested RM25bil in Sarawak in 2024: Awang Tengah
KUCHING: Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) has invested RM25 billion in Sarawak last year, said Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan. Awang Tengah, who is also the Sarawak Minister for International Trade, Industry and Investment said these investments include nine first hydrocarbon discoveries and two major production milestones – the Kasawari field at Block SK316 and the Jerun field at Block SK408. "Ongoing offshore development and exploration projects are in progress to ensure future energy security. "Petronas is intensifying frontier exploration through data enrichment and strategic partnerships for seismic processing, reinforcing Sarawak's role in Malaysia's energy sector, supporting long-term energy security and economic growth," he said during his ministry's winding-up session at the State Legislative Assembly sitting here today. Meanwhile, Awang Tengah said Sarawak recognises natural gas as a vital transition fuel in the global journey towards net-zero emissions and the state is committed to its responsible development. He said the Sarawak Gas Roadmap leverages Sarawak's abundant natural gas resources, which constitute over 60 per cent of Malaysia's reserves, to drive industrialisation, improve energy security and attract sustainable investment. "As part of this initiative, a RM100 million city gas trunkline in Bintulu will expand clean and affordable energy access for homes and businesses. The project is going to be implemented soon. "Meanwhile, the RM1 billion Samalaju Pipeline will transport 300 million standard cubic feet (mmscf) per day of gas from Bintulu to Samalaju Industrial Park. The installation of this gas pipeline is expected to be completed by the end of 2025," he said.

Joint declaration with Putrajaya allows Sarawak to exempt PETRONAS from licensing requirements, says Abang Johari
KUCHING: Sarawak can exempt PETRONAS and its subsidiaries from licensing requirements to operate in the state following the signing of a joint declaration with the federal government, says Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg. The Sarawak Premier said the declaration served as a guide for how PETRONAS would conduct its operations in Sarawak in collaboration with state-owned Petros. "We give them an exemption if they apply (for a licence), but they have to tell us. "PETRONAS, being a national company, we give exemption to them," he told a press conference at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly complex on Thursday (May 22). He added that the authority to issue licences and grant exemptions lies with the state's Utility and Telecommunication Ministry. The Premier also said Sarawak was committed to working closely with the federal government, PETRONAS and Petros to implement the collaborative framework outlined in the joint declaration in good faith. "This sets in motion a strategic shift towards realising Sarawak's gas potential, advancing the Sarawak Gas Roadmap and accelerating the transition to a cleaner and more sustainable energy future, in line with the aspiration of Sarawak to be the energy hub in the Asean region," he said. The joint declaration, signed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Abang Johari in Putrajaya on Wednesday (May 21), affirmed that all federal and Sarawak state laws relating to distribution of gas in Sarawak will coexist and be respected by all parties involved in such activities, including PETRONAS and Petros. It also recognised Petros as the gas aggregator in Sarawak, while PETRONAS would continue its functions and activities under the Petroleum Development Act 1974. Abang Johari welcomed the declaration as a clear manifestation of mutual respect and recognition of Sarawak's regulatory framework, particularly the Distribution of Gas Ordinance 2016. "This joint declaration shows that Sarawak's rights are respected and that real progress comes from genuine partnership and mutual trust," he said.

Anwar (left) and Abang Johari show the signed joint declaration. – Photo from Sarawak Premier's Office KUCHING (May 21): All relevant federal and state laws governing gas distribution in Sarawak will coexist and be upheld by all parties involved in such activities, according to a joint declaration signed today by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg in Putrajaya today. The declaration stated that the parties include Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) and Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros). 'Petronas will continue its functions, activities, responsibilities and obligations entrusted to Petronas in Malaysia, under the Petroleum Development Act 1974 (PDA 1974) and its regulations. 'Parties shall endeavour to continue to work together to detail out the framework for the benefit of the nation, taking into consideration the aspirations of Sarawak,' it said. The joint statement also confirmed the appointment of Petros as the gas aggregator for Sarawak. This appointment, effective March 1, 2025, is made under Section 7A of the Distribution of Gas Ordinance (DGO) 2016 and must be respected by all parties engaged in the marketing, distribution, and supply of gas to consumers in the state. 'For agreements and arrangements pertaining to the supply and sale of natural gas to consumers in the State of Sarawak, the role of Petros is in alignment with this declaration. 'Any agreements and arrangements between Petronas and/or its subsidiaries with third parties for the purpose of LNG (liquefied natural gas) sales from upstream operations through to LNG exports to foreign parties shall remain unaffected,' it said. Both leaders also announced that Petronas and Petros will enter into discussions to broaden business cooperation in support of Sarawak's domestic gas requirements. These discussions will include joint initiatives to implement projects delivering up to 1.2 billion standard cubic feet per day (Bscf/d) of gas, in line with the Sarawak Gas Roadmap. Additionally, both entities will explore joint ventures in green energy, hydrogen, and power generation projects, in line with Sarawak's broader ambition to establish itself as an energy hub in the Asean region. Meanwhile at a press conference, Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, said the agreement represented a step forward in national and state development through cooperation between Petronas and Petros. 'This understanding, in principle, had been discussed earlier with the Premier, taking into account the parameters that recognise both the Petroleum Development Act (PDA) 1974 and Sarawak's amended Distribution of Gas Ordinance (DGO) 2016,' he said in a Bernama report. Anwar said the agreement reflected Sarawak's growing maturity and capability, including the establishment of a state oil company with significant potential. He added that the understanding ensured Petronas' role would remain intact, while Petros' position in Sarawak would be formally recognised. 'Petronas' role is not diminished. It continues to operate as usual, but now within a framework that also takes into account Sarawak's enhanced responsibilities and Petros' role. 'This understanding allows Petronas to continue its operations, while recognising Petros as a key player in Sarawak. Both will work together to elevate Malaysia's standing in the oil and gas sector,' he said. Anwar also said the government aimed to position Sarawak as the regional hub for the oil and gas industry in Asean. 'I believe this is a realistic and strategic move that will strengthen the nation's economy and enhance Sarawak's position,' he said. Also present were Deputy Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof; Sarawak Utilities and Telecommunications Minister, Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi; and Works Minister, Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi.
