Chandigarh: A panel of legal experts are being consulted for a law under which harsher punishment would be given for acts of "sacrilege" against religious scriptures, Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema said Monday.The government is not in a hurry and will not bring such a law which will require subsequent amendments, the minister said.Asked whether the legislation will be brought in the two-day special session of the Punjab Assembly starting July 10, Cheema said, "A panel of legal experts are being consulted over framing the law. We will take the opinion of LR (legal remembrancer) and the AG (Advocate General) office."Cheema said Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann is serious about the sacrilege issue."The law will ensure that no person dares to indulge in sacrilege. Our work (on framing the legislation) is not finished yet. When the draft is completely ready, we will share," he said while speaking to reporters after a cabinet meeting here.The council of ministers, led by Chief Minister Mann, held a meeting here.Asked whether the Bill is not ready yet, Cheema said, "If need be, we will extend it (session) or convene another one after 10 days. We are not in a hurry." He added that the Bill was under works."Earlier, SAD-BJP government framed a wrong bill and then the Congress regime framed the wrong one. We will not bring a law that requires repeated amendments," he added.The minister said there are several other Bills, including concerning goods and services tax, that will be tabled in the upcoming assembly session.The AAP government was expected to table the law on "sacrilege" against religious scriptures in the two-day special session of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha.On June 28, CM Mann had said that his government will bring a law for stricter punishment for sacrilege acts. He had announced the move after holding a meeting with representatives of the 'Sarb Dharam Beadbi Rokko Kanoon Morcha'.Mann had expressed concern over existing legal loopholes that allow individuals guilty of such unpardonable acts to walk free, calling it completely unwarranted and unacceptable.The CM had highlighted that while the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) provides clear provisions regarding religious places, it remains silent on holy 'granths'.Capital punishment could also be part of the law.It is not the first time that a law was being brought for stricter punishment for sacrilege.In 2016, the then SAD-BJP government brought in the IPC (Punjab Amendment) Bill, 2016 and CrPC (Punjab Amendment) Bill, 2016 recommending life sentence for sacrilege against Guru Granth Sahib. The Centre later returned the bill.In 2018, the then Amarinder Singh government had passed two Bills -- the Indian Penal Code (Punjab Amendment) Bill, 2018, and the Code of Criminal Procedure (Punjab Amendment) Bill 2018, which stipulated a punishment of up to life imprisonment for injury, damage or sacrilege to Guru Granth Sahib, Bhagavad Gita, Quran and the Bible.However, the president did not give assent to these two Bills.

'Ache Din' not for Delhi citizens as fuel ban for old vehicles to kick in from November
The Delhi-NCR region is bracing for a fresh wave of vehicular restrictions as a fuel ban targeting End-of-Life (EOL) vehicles is set to take effect from November 1, 2025. The move, initiated by the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), aims to curb air pollution by prohibiting fuel supply to diesel vehicles older than 10 years and petrol vehicles older than 15 latest order comes after weeks of confusion and fierce public backlash, triggered by an earlier July 1 rollout of the same ban in Delhi. Under the directive, petrol pumps were instructed to deny fuel to EOL vehicles, supported by automated ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) systems and police within days, the Delhi government backtracked, suspending the fuel restriction temporarily following widespread outrage from citizens. Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa stated that vehicles would not be impounded and emphasised a "new system" to balance environmental goals with public rights. "We will not let Delhi's environment be harmed, nor will we permit the confiscation of vehicles owned by its residents," he said on July response to Delhi's plea, CAQM convened a meeting and decided to enforce the fuel ban uniformly across all six NCR cities which includes Delhi, Gurugram, Faridabad, Noida, Ghaziabad, and Sonipat, from November 1, providing time for systemic improvements and public authorities acknowledged operational challenges, including:Incomplete ANPR infrastructure in NCR citiesPoor integration with state vehicle databasesRisk of illegal fuel sourcing from neighbouring statesThese concerns were central to the Delhi government's request for a delay in policy has sparked political uproar and legal action. Video of Kerala BJP leaders with Jyoti Malhotra surfaces amid espionage row
Thiruvananthapuram: A video showing BJP leaders in Kerala with YouTuber Jyoti Malhotra currently under arrest in an espionage case -- has surfaced. The video surfaced just days after BJP leaders criticised the Kerala government for hosting Malhotra under its influencer outreach campaign. The video dates back to 2023, during the inaugural run of the Vande Bharat Express from Kasaragod to Thiruvananthapuram. In it, Malhotra is seen engaging in a promotional interaction with then Union Minister of State for External Affairs V. Muraleedharan, asking him about the significance of the new high-speed train. Seated beside Muraleedharan is then Kerala BJP President K. Surendran. Malhotra was one of 41 influencers invited by Kerala Tourism, with her travel and accommodation arranged by a private agency contracted by the department. This development comes at a time when BJP leaders had launched a strong attack on the Pinarayi Vijayan-led CPI(M) government over revelations that Malhotra's Kerala visit -- including travel, accommodation, food, and filming -- was fully sponsored by a private agency contracted by the state's Tourism Department. Following her arrest in an espionage case, BJP leaders -- including senior leader Prakash Javadekar -- slammed the state government, demanding an explanation for 'hosting a tainted individual.' "The Kerala government must explain how such a serious lapse occurred. They cannot simply brush this aside," Javadekar had said. In response, the CPI(M) on Monday condemned the BJP's attempts to politicise the issue, accusing the party of trying to deflect attention from its own failures on national security. Tourism Minister P.A. Mohamed Riyas, who also happens to be Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's son-in-law, had come under fire from BJP leaders over the matter. However, with the emergence of the video, both sides seek to distance themselves from any perceived association with the accused. At the time when Jyoti Malhotra was invited to Kerala to promote tourism, there were no known allegations against her and she was considered a regular social media influencer. She was there in her capacity as a content creator.
