WWE's Liv Morgan joins Lily James in Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo
The 'Yesterday' actress and WWE wrestler are joining forces on Neon's upcoming thriller - which is based on the original 1992 noir crime film 'Bad Liuetenant' - alongside 'Godzilla v. Kong' actor Shun Oguri.
As reported by Deadline, the film has been written by '13 Assassins' scribe Daisuke Tengan, who is reuniting with director Takashi Miike.
The film will follow the titular Bad Lieutenant (Oguri), who is a corrupt gambler in the Metropolitan Police Force.
He gets caught up in a messy case when an FBI agent (James) is in Tokyo to investigate the disappearance of a politician's daughter (Morgan).
They appear to be shadowed by a killer in the yakuza underworld, adding more tension to proceedings.
Neon - the studio behind the film - recently had Oscars success with 'Anora', which won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, with their other movies including 'The Monkey', 'Longlegs', 'Parasite' and 'I, Tonya'.
Morgan (real name Gionna Daddio) previously appeared in 2023's 'The Kill Room' alongside Uma Thurman, Joe Manganiello and Samuel L. Jackson, and an episode of 'Chucky'.
Filmmaker Miike - whose credits include 'Audition', 'Dead or Alive' and 'Ichi The Killer' - has promised "unforgettable entertainment" from the upcoming project.
He said: "A team of incredibly talented actors and crew has gathered in Tokyo.
Now, I'm about to throw a fastball straight down the middle of your strike zone – no tricks, no gimmicks.
"I'm confident we are about to break through every limit, to create unforgettable entertainment. Get ready for the ride with us."
Producer Jeremy Thomas of Recorded Picture Company added: "We're all delighted to reinterpret this iconic IP with a master filmmaker like Takashi Miike.
'We've produced 10 films in Japan, most recently 'Grand Maison Paris', which has grossed over $28M domestically, and it's a fertile place to create and distribute films.
"I feel the time is right for this irreverent hybrid.'
And Sam Pressman, the CEO of Pressman Film, revealed his own special connection to the original movie, and described the project as "a dream come true".
He said: "Director Miike brings a fearless new vision to the Bad Lieutenant, a character defined by the auteur.
"Just as maestros Ferrara and Herzog delivered films as radically different as their own voices, Miike's adaptation is unrelentingly wild and unique.
"My father Edward R. Pressman, always believed this story of corruption, both of police and the human soul, has a global resonance.
"To realise this next evolution now in Tokyo with Director Miike, NEON and my father's lifelong friend Jeremy Thomas — all true believers in the power of independent cinema — is both an honour and a dream come true.'

Taylor Russell has exited the Thomas Crown Affair over 'creative differences'. The 31-year-old actress was previously cast as the female lead in Michael B. The 1999 movie remake Pierce Brosnan as a rich playboy who enjoyed the thrill of stealing art, opposite insurance investigator Rene Russo. Lily Gladstone and Sir Kenneth Branagh are among the cast of the new film, although their roles are being kept under wraps. The upcoming movie takes place in Europe, and the art of thieving remains a central theme of the film, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Drew Pearce has written the script, while Patrick McCormick and Marc Toberoff will serve as producers. Alan Trustman, who wrote the original film, has been hired as an executive producer on the upcoming movie. The romantic thriller is scheduled for release in March 2027.

Willem Dafoe eyes reunion with Robert Eggers for Werwulf
Willem Dafoe is in talks to star in director Robert Eggers' Werwulf. The 69-year-old actor - who previously worked with the filmmaker, 42, on The Lighthouse, The Northman and Nosferatu - is in negotiations to appear in Eggers' upcoming horror flick, Deadline has said. The Spider-Man star could be joining Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Lily Rose-Depp, who are also in talks to lead Werwulf. Werwulf is being penned by Eggers' The Northman co-writer Sjón, and is slated to hit cinemas on Christmas Day 2026 in the US. The director and scribe are also due to produce with Focus Features alongside Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner, who will be producing under Working Title. Meanwhile, Maiden Voyage's Chris and Eleanor Columbus will serve as executive producers. While plot details are unknown, Werwulf is expected to be a 13th-century werewolf horror flick set in England. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the dialogue will be 'true to the time period,' with translations and annotations provided to help audiences understand the Old English. Eggers has reportedly abandoned an earlier plan to shoot the film in black and white. As well as Werwulf, Eggers is also said to be in talks to work with Dafoe on a new cinematic retelling of A Christmas Carol for Warner Bros. The director's last release was 2024's Nosferatu, which starred Bill Skarsgård, Dafoe, Rose-Depp, Nicholas Hoult, and Emma Corrin, and followed a young woman haunted by the obsessive vampire Count Orlok. Eggers recently spoke about the gothic influences behind his take on Nosferatu, citing Jack Clayton's 1961 film The Innocents, based on Henry James's novella The Turn of the Screw. He said on Alamo Drafthouse's Guest Selects YouTube series: 'I think it is one of the best - perhaps the best - gothic ghost movie ever made. 'I watch it a couple times a year probably for inspiration. Freddy Francis was the cinematographer, who directed many Hammer horror films, but his finest collaborations are with Jack Clayton. 'And what he does with the camera was very inspiring to what my cinematographer and I were up to with Nosferatu.' Eggers added that another key influence for Nosferatu was Thorold Dickinson's 1949 film The Queen of Spades. The director said he aimed to recreate its 'fluidity and precision of the camera work' and was also inspired by its practical snowfall effects, achieved using potato powder instead of CGI. He said: 'And the atmosphere of the film is also incredibly effective. The snowy Russian streets is a sort of look and vibe we tried to create later in [Nosferatu], particularly the potato snowflake snowfall is very beautiful and we use the same kind of practical snow.' Eggers also credited Ingmar Bergman's 1972 drama Cries and Whispers as a major influence for Nosferatu, citing its 'ghostly atmosphere' and powerful performances. He said: 'Cries and Whispers by Ingmar Bergman is perhaps my favourite Bergman film. 'It's also one of the best horror films ever made even though it certainly doesn't try to be one, and wouldn't be classified as one.'

Jelly Roll sent Logan Paul crashing through a table during a chaotic episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live! The 40-year-old singer - who is set to make his WWE wrestling debut in a tag team match at SummerSlam in August - was a special guest host for the late night talk show on Wednesday (16.07.25) with his tag partner Randy Orton also on the programme. Drew McIntyre, one of their opponents at the upcoming event over August 2 and 3, interrupted the interview, sparking a brawl between the two wrestlers which spilled backstage. Jelly attempted to bring things back on track, only for Logan Paul - Drew's tag partner for the match - to come out on stage and slap the host. The Save Me hitmaker ended up hitting the Chokeslam move made famous by the likes of The Undertaker, sending the controversial YouTuber through the desk. The exchange was part of the storyline building to the blockbuster SummerSlam match. Jelly has been working hard before his first ever wrestling match next month, losing almost 300lbs over the last couple of years after previously weighing over 500lbs. Speaking on The Pat McAfee Show this week, he said: "When me and Hunter [Triple H] started talking, the more I got involved with WWE over the last couple of years, every time I lose weight, they're like, 'Looking good'. "'Good enough for a match yet or do I need to lose another hundred?' 'A little more, brother.' [Laughs]. I just kept pushing for it. "I have been training. I have quietly been living in Orlando for three or four weeks at the PC [WWE Performance Center], showing up every day like a piece of furniture. "They can't keep me out of there. I'm there from the moment I wake up until it closes. I'm obsessed." Jelly explained that he's been working with retired WWE wrestler turned coach Matt Bloom, while some big names have been on hand to help. He added: 'I was training with Matt Bloom the other day, and Undertaker comes in with Michelle [McCool]. 'They just want to watch for a minute, is that cool?' 'For sure.' "This is who he is as a human. The entire three-hour session, him and his wife stood on those ropes and gave me pointer after pointer. "Kevin Owens, Jacob Fatu came in and wrestled with me the other day for three-four hours." He claimed the reason the WWE superstars and legends are so willing to help him is his clear passion and drive to make it work. He said: "These dudes are like pouring into me because they see that I'm trying to take it as serious as I can."
