Turkish authorities detain prominent journalist for allegedly threatening Erdogan
The detention of Fatih Altayli, whose daily commentaries on YouTube attract hundreds of thousands of viewers, comes amid a widespread crackdown on the opposition.
State-run Anadolu Agency said he was questioned after his detention late Saturday over a comment he made following a recent poll that showed more than 70% of the public opposed a lifetime presidency for Erdogan, who has been in power for more than two decades.
On his YouTube channel, Altayli said Friday he wasn't surprised by the result and that the Turkish people preferred checks on authority. 'Look at the history of this nation… this is a nation which has strangled its sultan when they didn't like him or want him.

During questioning, Altayli denied threatening the president, according to Halk TV's website. It remains unclear whether Altayli has been released.
Officials from municipalities controlled by the main opposition Republican People's Party have faced waves of arrests this year, including Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, who was detained in March over allegations of corruption.
Many consider the cases to be politically motivated, although Erdogan's government insists the courts are impartial and free of political involvement.

Opposition to land pooling increases as support remains limited to AAP leadership
Jalandhar: If voices from Punjab's rural areas, especially among farmers and their organisations, are getting louder against land acquisition policy, voices in support of the policy are confined only to a section of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leadership. There are no organic voices yet from urban areas supporting the policy. Unlike the farm protest at Shambhu border, which led to the blockade of the vital National Highway 44 for close to a year, and where there were voices from trade, industry, and urban areas for lifting the blockade, there are no such voices from urban areas speaking in support of the land pooling scheme. The crackdown on the protest at the Shambhu border helped the ruling party get support from trade and industry sectors, and this became evident during the Ludhiana West byelection. Even when it comes to community, caste, social and economic levels, no section has yet started speaking out in support of the policy. There are quite a few videos that have been widely shared on Punjabi social media space, in which farmers have issued warnings to AAP supporters to face serious physical consequences if they come to their villages to explain the policy. With opposition to the policy now becoming 'political correctness' among farmers, AAP may face an uphill task in getting farmers who can publicly speak in support of the scheme. From the govt side, along with chief minister Bhagwant Mann, ministers Aman Arora, Harpal Cheema, Hardeep Singh Mundian, Sanjeev Arora, and MP Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer have defended the policy. A few office bearers have also given interviews to a few YouTube channels to defend the policy. However, most of the MLAs or constituency in-charges, whose constituencies have areas coming under the land pooling policy, have confined themselves to sharing the party's pro-policy statements or videos, instead of giving their own statements or going to the villages whose land is covered under the scheme. These were mainly the rural areas of Punjab which provided the greatest push to the urban-centric AAP in the 2014 parliamentart election, due to the peculiar political situation in the state. In the 2022 assembly elections, the party swept equally in rural and urban areas. Now, with farm groups, opposition parties, Punjabi activists, and netizens pushing the counter-narrative across rural Punjab, much beyond the villages whose land is coming under it, the task for AAP is getting tougher.

Meet TF-2000: Super advanced air defence destroyer developed by Turkey, it is capable of..., is it a matter of concern for India?
(File) TF-2000 Destroyer: In another major move to boost its military power, Turkey announced that it will build an air defense destroyer ship and four additional patrol ships to bolster the maritime capabilities of the Turkish Navy. According to media reports, state-owned ship builder ASFAT, has secured the contract to build the TF-2000, Turkey's first homegrown warship, which will be built in about 60 blocks, and is expected to be completed by 2030. The company will also build four patrol ships based on Turkey's existing Ada-class corvettes, within the next 36 months, reports said. What is the TF-2000 destroyer? As per Turkish media reports, the TF-2000 destroyer will be about 149 meters in length, 21 meters in width, and will feature a landing platform for a 15-ton military helicopter. The destroyer will be designed to operate in violent seas and able to withstand tidal waves as high as 4 meters, they said. Additionally, the TF-2000 will be able operate for 45 days with requiring any re-supply, and will be capable of remaining at sea for 180 days, while receiving receiving support from the shore. On the weapons front, the state-of-the-destroyer will be equipped with a vertical launching system, a 127 mm naval gun, torpedo launcher, close-in weapons system and electronic warfare sensors. The ship is expected to have a service life of over 40 years, as per the reports. How TF-2000 will boost Turkey's naval strength? While primarily designed for air defense, the TF-2000 warship will essentially be a multirole destroyer, capable of anti-submarine, anti-surface and electronic warfare, anti-insurgency and special operations, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance tasks. AFSAT will also build four additional patrol boats, based on Turkey's previously developed Ada-class corvette design. The 100 meter long, and 14 meter wide boats will be capable of carrying military helicopters like the S-70B Seahawk, and feature a wide array of weapons including 76 mm naval guns, vertical launchers, close-in weapon systems and anti-submarine and missile systems. Experts believe the TF-2000 and Hisar-class ships will significantly bolster Turkey's naval capabilities and will also strengthen the security of its maritime borders with rival nations like Israel, Greece and Cyprus. Additionally, the new ships will further boost Turkey's reputation and presence in the global arms market. Why India is concerned? Turkey, along with China and Azerbaijan, were among the few countries that openly supported Pakistan during the recent India-Pakistan conflict. Ahead of Operation Sindoor, Turkey, which has strengthened its military ties with Pakistan in recent times, had reportedly docked its warship at the Karachi Port, to deter any sea-based attack on the country by the Indian Navy. Additionally, Turkey also armed the Pakistani forces with advanced military drones like the Bayraktar TB2, which were actively used against Indian installations during Operation Sindoor.
