No heels needed: 5 sneakers that add height without discomfort

Wearing heels is a top-of-mind option for women looking to add more height. But let's face it, they're not exactly made for long walks, busy days, or the Metro Manila landscape.
In fact, orthopedic surgeon Dr. Emilia Halili Tanchuling said in a 2009 report that women who wear heels place their "body in an abnormal position."
"When you're wearing heels, your foot is thrust forward into your toes and on the ball of the feet. So, what the body does is it tries to compensate. That is already a postural problem," Dr. Tanchuling said.
That is not to say you should avoid wearing heels altogether, but to find a pair that won't compromise your comfort.
"Wear shoes with an inch or two at the most because this relaxes your heel cord," the doctor advised.
For those looking to rest their feet from wearing heels, today's sneaker designs offer the best of both worlds: comfort and a few extra inches.
Whether you're looking to hit your 10,000 steps goal or simply running some errands on a busy day, here are five sneakers with elevation for that added lift.
1. Converse Chuck Taylor All Star Lift Double Stack
The Converse Chuck Taylor All Stars Lift Double Stack offers 2 inches of platform height for its wearer. Think classic Chuck Taylors, but with a few inches for those looking to stand taller. Website.
2. New Balance 740

4. Asics GT-2000 13 ATC

A 10-minute walk post-meal can help in blood sugar management

A 2025 study published in Scientific Reports suggests a 10-minute walk after eating could effectively manage blood sugar. Led by Kaito Hashimoto along with six of his colleagues, the study titled 'Positive impact of a 10-min walk immediately after glucose intake on postprandial glucose levels' examined 12 healthy young adults, six males and six females, and placed them in three conditions: Control condition (rest): Participants sat and rested after consuming 75 grams of a glucose (sugar) solution. 10-minute Walk Condition: Participants walked on a treadmill for 10 minutes immediately after drinking the glucose solution. 30-minute Walk Condition: Participants sat for 30 minutes after drinking the glucose solution and then walked on a treadmill for 30 minutes. The study revealed that the 10-minute walk was just as effective as the 30-minute walk, given that there was no significant difference in overall blood sugar control between the two conditions. It also showed that the 10-minute immediate walk and walking 30 minutes after eating both lowered overall blood sugar levels in a span of two hours compared to just sitting post-meal. The study did acknowledge that the results are limited to healthy young adults, so further studies are encouraged to see if the same benefits apply to older adults, pregnant women, and people with metabolic issues like diabetes. The study also presents the 10-minute walking session as a practical solution for busy individuals looking to prevent hyperglycemia, especially those at risk of diabetes. Hyperglycemia, also known as high blood sugar, 'happens when there's too much sugar (glucose) in your blood' and is common in people who have diabetes, according to the Cleveland Clinic. These findings are particularly relevant nowadays, given the alarmingly rising cases of diabetes worldwide. A 2024 report said more than 800 million adults have diabetes globally, a chronic metabolic disease involving blood sugar levels, which can damage the heart, blood vessels, nerves, and other organs if untreated. Filipina caregiver in Israel dies of injuries from Iran missile strike in June

A Filipina caregiver in Rehovot, Israel has died from injuries she sustained when an Iranian missile strike hit her apartment block, the Philippine Embassy in Israel said on Sunday. According to the embassy in a Facebook post, Leah Mosquera, 49 and a native of Negros Occidental, underwent several surgeries at Shamir Medical Center, where she "fought for her life" at the intensive care unit for several weeks. Her passing was confirmed by her sister Joy, who also works in Israel. "The Embassy is now working on the repatriation arrangements and the provision of all necessary assistance for Ms. Mosquera," the embassy said. "Lovingly called Ate Leah by her friends, she would have celebrated her 50th birthday this 29 July," it added. Longtime enemies Israel and Iran have exchanged deadly missile strikes since Israel launched airstrikes against the Islamic republic on June 13. — BM, GMA Integrated News
