EC to Tejashwi: Hand over suspicious EPIC for probe

leader
to "hand over for investigation" a voter ID card bearing EPIC number RAB2916120, which he claimed to possess but which, according to the poll body, has "not been issued officially".

The controversy erupted after Tejashwi alleged at a press conference on Saturday that his name was missing from the draft electoral rolls, warning that he might be unable to contest the upcoming assembly elections later this year.
In a letter addressed to Tejashwi, sub-divisional magistrate of Patna Sadar, who also serves as the electoral registration officer (ERO) for the Digha assembly constituency, said, "Upon verification, it was found that his name figures at serial number 416 of polling station number 204, located in the library building of Bihar Veterinary College and his EPIC number is RAB0456228."
The letter further noted that the EPIC number cited by Tejashwi – RAB2916120 – did not appear to have been officially issued. "So, you are requested to hand over the details of your EPIC card with the original copy of the card that you cited at the press conference to the undersigned for a thorough investigation into the matter," the notice said. However, no specific deadline was mentioned for compliance.
The development came amid intense political sparring between the Election Commission and opposition parties, particularly since the launch of the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar in late June.
The opposition has accused the EC of attempting to disenfranchise marginalised voters and acting under political pressure.
RJD spokesperson Chitranjan Gagan termed the EC notice a "diversionary tactic". "The draft roll by the EC has large-scale irregularities. On the page where Tejashwi's name is listed, numerous irregularities have been identified. We raised the issue of many voters' names missing from the draft rolls, but the EC is now issuing a notice to our leader," he alleged.

Former Bihar Congress president Akhilesh Prasad Singh accused the EC of abandoning its neutrality. "How can people expect free and fair polling in Bihar if the EC behaves like this?" he asked.
On the other hand, BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya launched a blistering attack on the RJD leader. "I still can't believe Tejashwi once compared himself to Steve Jobs, only to now be exposed holding multiple EPICs! From fake comparisons to fake voter IDs, the hypocrisy is staggering," he posted on X.
Malviya added that a former deputy CM holding two EPICs constitutes a "criminal offence" and demanded immediate filing of an FIR.
The confrontation between the INDIA bloc and the Election Commission has intensified since the SIR process began with the opposition staging marches to the EC office in Patna and disrupting the recently concluded session of the Bihar legislature. The Parliament session too remains turbulent over the issue.

Election Commission Uses India's 6-Run Win Against England To Encourage Voting
Thirteen months ago, when India beat South Africa in the final of the ICC World T20, Mohammad Siraj, in an after-match interview, said: "I only believe in Jassi bhai". On Monday, when he walked onto The Oval, England needed 35 runs to win, and they had four wickets in hand. Siraj, who didn't play that final against the Proteas in June 2024, didn't have Jasprit Bumrah with him today. And he told himself: "Believe in yourself." He picked up a fifer and India beat England by six runs to win the fifth and final Test of the series. What looked like a sure-shot English victory on day four turned into a dramatic collapse as Siraj led India to one of the most thrilling comebacks in recent memory. With this win, India levelled the five-match series 2-2, capping off an unforgettable contest. And much like the fans, the Election Commission has tapped into the excitement surrounding the win to promote democratic participation, comparing the win to voting. "Team India wins the 5th Test by just 6 runs! Edge-of-the-seat stuff, because every run is a game-changer. In a democracy, every vote counts just as much. Every eligible elector must enrol in the electoral roll!" they wrote on X. ???? Team India wins the 5th Test by just 6 runs! Edge-of-the-seat stuff, because every run is a game-changer. In a democracy, every vote counts just as much. ✅ Every Eligible Elector must Enroll in the Electoral Roll! ???? @BCCI #INDvsENGTest #OvalTest #TeamIndia #SIR #Bihar — Election Commission of India (@ECISVEEP) August 4, 2025 Enrolling in the electoral roll means registering yourself as a voter in the country's official list of eligible voters. The Commission's message comes as it carries out a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list in Bihar, ahead of state assembly elections due later this year. The drive, which saw a 99.8 per cent participation, collected around 7.24 crore registration forms. The revision led to the removal of approximately 65.6 lakh names from the rolls, mainly classified as dead, duplicate, migrated, or untraceable, leaving 7.24 crore electors in the draft list released on August 1. Opposition parties have slammed the exclusion of Aadhaar, Voter ID (EPIC), and ration cards as valid documents in the voter roll revision process. The Supreme Court is currently hearing the case and has warned it will intervene if it detects large-scale removal of eligible voters. Earlier, the Court directed the Election Commission to accept these commonly used IDs during the SIR. Coming back to the match, the fifth Test match delivered high drama as England, chasing a formidable target of 374, were in cruise control mode. With tons from Joe Root and Harry Brook, the hosts crossed the 300-run mark and seemed well on course for a memorable win. A stunning reversal followed. Mohammed Siraj delivered a fiery spell, tightening the screws when it mattered most. England's batting order crumbled under pressure, losing their last seven wickets for only 66 runs. Finishing the match, India bowled them out for 367, securing victory by a razor-thin margin of six runs, their narrowest in red ball cricket. AIMIM chief and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi also celebrated Mohammed Siraj's stellar performance with a tweet in Hyderabadi slang, " Poora khol diye Pasha," meaning Siraj was at his absolute best. The fast bowler, who took 23 wickets in the five-match series and five in the final innings, was named Man of the Match.

10 lakh of 17 lakh Gopalganj voter forms have no supporting documents: District Election Officer
A significant number of enumeration forms in Gopalganj, Bihar, were submitted without necessary documents. The District Election Officer revealed that over 10 lakh forms lacked proof. Similar issues are emerging across other districts. Authorities are assisting electors in gathering documents. "Yes, there are several such cases of electors whose forms have come but not with the documents required. However, this list is coming down every day as BLOs are going from house to house to reach all such electors and help them with the documents. We have also brought out the Mahadalit Vikas register and SC/ST family registers to specifically help the disadvantaged sections make it to the rolls. Also, it must be noted that the ERO has the right to assess each elector's details based on field enquiry and other inputs to decide on electoral roll entry . We are quite positive that all eligible electors will make it to the final roll," a district election officer of a district with lakhs of such cases told major concerns over the inability of electors to furnish the ECI prescribed documents of proof of birth for themselves and parents (in some categories), the poll panel had shifted its focus to submission of forms by July 25 -- even without documents -- and submit them later during the claims and objections period over the month of August for the ERO to assess.
