Kaizer Chiefs' Motaung responds to Nabi exit reports

The Citizen12-05-2025
"We're just planning for the future,' says the Chiefs sporting director.
Kaizer Chiefs sporting director Kaizer Motaung Jr has responded to rumours that head coach Nasreddine Nabi will be leaving the club at the end of the season.
This comes after the Sunday Times reported this past weekend that Chiefs will fire Nabi and his technical team.
OPINION – Now Chiefs need to build sustainable success
The report came a day after Nabi led Amakhosi to the Nedbank Cup triumph over rivals at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.
Speaking to Xoli Zondo on 5FM on Monday morning, Motaung Jr dismissed the rumours, saying no decision has been made yet on Nabi's future.
'Coach has got another season after this with us now,' said Motaung Jr.
'At the same time, like we do after every season, we sit down and review. We know that the results in the league have been inconsistent.
'We know that we've just been able to achieve a record milestone. With everything else, we're moving forward in our planning.
'We want to savour this moment, massively view this moment moving forward. And galvanise the supporters, the technical team, the players, and the staff for the mission ahead. So, we're just planning for the future.'
Will Nedbank Cup triumph save Nabi's job?
Meanwhile, speaking after his side's victory over Pirates, Nabi said that he was hoping that winning the Nedbank Cup would convince the Amakhosi fans that he is the right man to lead the club.

'My first objective for the club is to place Kaizer Chiefs back in its natural position. I'm happy for this trophy because it is going to help me continue my process, and it is going to give the fans a lot more confidence in this project,' said Nabi.
However, with Chiefs in danger of missing out on the top eight, it remains to be seen if the club's hierarchy will decide to keep him for next season or terminate his contract.

Kaizer Chiefs new striker: Two main targets revealed

Kaizer Chiefs are in the market for a new striker in a bid to answer their goal-scoring woes. Kaizer Chiefs have struggled in front of goal for several seasons. So, Amakhosi's technical team is actively hunting for a new striker. Let's take a look at their latest targets. Chiefs have identified two main striker targets – Etiosa Ighodaro and Dzenan Zajmovi. Initially, Ighodaro was reportedly spotted in training with Amakhosi. However, he is now training alone due to his current contract situation with Mamelodi Sundowns. 'He is training on his own. It's believed that his head is affected by the interest from Kaizer Chiefs and that he still has a running contract with Sundowns, so he is at a crossroads right now. But because he wants to remain fit, he is training on his own for now,' the insider stated on SNL . Meanwhile, Chippa United striker Zajmovic is the other player on Amakhosi's radar. 'I think if he's on a free, it's a good gamble for me. Whether he will start it will depend on his match fitness and how he is able to gel and I think the coach is the only one who can answer. Zajmovic at Galaxy showed a lot of goal-scoring prowess, he's good in the air, good on the feet, good decision-making. If they can get him as soon as possible and (Tashreeq) Morris and other guys, put them on loan, you can't have a heavy strike force,' he added. 'Chiefs haven't given up on him. They are still working behind the scenes to try and get him for this season. They have a chance of registering him as a local player if they can sign him as he is waiting for his Permanent Residence Permit papers as well. So Chiefs are looking at all those possibilities to sign him,' the second source told the Siya crew. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211. Chiefs face Stellies test as they look for Premiership lift

'If you look at the bigger picture of the project, they're heading in the right direction,' former Chiefs captain Willard Katsande told FarPost. Kaizer Chiefs face a difficult opening salvo in the Betway Premiership on Sunday, when they take on Steve Barker's Stellenbosch FC at the Cape Town Stadium. ALSO READ: Appollis chuffed with dream start to Pirates career Amakhosi had an unwanted weekend off due to their non-participation in the MTN8. This was after Nasreddine Nabi's side finished ninth in the Premiership last season. Never-say-die Stellies Stellenbosch, meanwhile, showed why they have developed a never-say-die reputation. Stellie saw off AmaZulu 3-2 after extra time on Sunday to set up an MTN8 semifinal against Sekhukhune United. Sanele Barns' brace and Langelihle Phili's extra time strike were enough to see off Arthur Zwane's Usuthu. Chiefs signed a host of new players in the off-season, while there were plenty of outgoings too. Nabi's side had a pre-season camp in the Netherlands. They then played the Toyota Cup against Asante Kotoko, losing on penalties after a goalless draw at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban. Chiefs played fairly well in Durban. But were haunted by problems of the past. They wasted opportunities to put the game to bed. It remains to be seen if Nabi is the man to turn their fortunes around in the Premiership. The Tunisian did lead Chiefs to their first trophy in a decade in the form of the 2024 Nedbank Cup. But Chiefs desperately need to mount more of a challenge at the top of the table this season. One man who does believe Chiefs are on the right path is their former skipper and midfield maestro Willard Katsande. 'Obviously everybody's entitled to their opinion, but if you look at the bigger picture of the project, they're heading in the right direction,' Katsande told FarPost. As for Chiefs' goalscoring problems, former Amakhosi assistant coach Farouk Khan believes they could look at signing free agents Zakhele Lepasa and Dzenan Zajmovic. Zajmovic scored 11 goals in all competitions for TS Galaxy last season, but they released him at the end of the campaign. Lepasa a 'good gamble' for Chiefs Lepasa, meanwhile, was released by Orlando Pirates ahead of the new season. 'If you look at Lepasa, he's more of a false nine coming from deep. He was injured most of last season, he didn't play one game for the complete duration. But we know Hugo Broos saw some quality, that's why he chose him for Bafana setup,' Khan told Soccerbeat's YouTube channel. 'I think if he's … free, it's a good gamble for me. Kaizer Chiefs most improved player wanted in Europe?

Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Nkosingiphile Ngcobo has been one of the few players who impressed during the pre-season. Having struggled for gametime last season, 'Mshini' has earned himself a place in the team during the team's pre-season tour in the Netherlands. According to Soccer Laduma, Ngcobo has attracted interest from European teams, prompting Chiefs to consider extending his deal. 'Last year it was not clear whether he was going to stay or not but this season it's believed that things have changed and the club is willing to keep him because the technical team wants him to be part of the squad which will play an important part this season. And now it's believed management has already exercised his one-year option on his contract so that they keep him until June 2027,' an insider told Soccer Laduma . Ngcobo's contract with Kaizer Chiefs runs until 2026 but if the club don't exercise the option to extend his deal, he could leave for free next season. 'The club is aware that if they don't exercise his option as soon as possible then they could lose him for free or at least close to nothing because his contract was coming to an end in June 2026. So with the exercising of the one-year option it gives the club the chance to negotiate a better price if the move was to happen,' the second insider told the same publication. Kaizer Chiefs kick off their 2025/26 season against Stellenbosch FC this coming weekend. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211.
