Sarawak to enhance journalists' expertise with international training initiative, says Premier
KUCHING (May 29): The Sarawak government is set to send state journalists abroad to participate in journalism-related programmes aimed at enhancing their expertise to match international standards, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
'I have instructed together with (Deputy Minister in Sarawak Premier's Department (Corporate Affairs and Sarawak Public Communications Unit)) Datuk Abdullah Saidol to start this programme for the future of Sarawak journalism,' he said when met by reporters after officiating at the Asia Carbon Conference 2025 today.
Abang Johari explained that this programme is not just an opportunity for free education, but a long-term investment to elevate the professionalism and critical thinking skills of journalists in the state.
'We will work with the journalists' association to assess eligible candidates, including in terms of qualifications and background,' he said.
He also stressed the importance of journalists who are not only skilled in reporting but also possess vision and insightful ideas to drive innovation within the media industry.
'I hope this program can improve the quality of reporting and open up more space for innovation in journalism,' he said.
This initiative is a continuation of the government's commitment made last year.

Batang Lupar 1 Bridge 84 pct complete, set to open by Gawai 2026, says Uggah

He said despite technical challenges, including an issue at pier number 52, the contractor had assured the matter would be resolved soon. 'We discussed about the bridge being usable by Gawai 2026. We hope all outstanding issues will be resolved and we will continue to visit and monitor the progress of this project,' he said in a Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) report after a working visit to the project site in Sebuyau today. According to the report, the 4.8km bridge forms part of the Sarawak government's ongoing effort to strengthen coastal road connectivity and will fully replace the long-standing ferry service between Sebuyau and Triso. The RM848.7 million project began construction on Jan 7, 2021, and is one of 16 major bridge projects currently underway across Sarawak. Uggah, who is also the State Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development, said the Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak is actively on the ground to assess and discuss any arising issues. 'Our aim is to minimise the number of delayed or problematic projects in the state,' he said. He also revealed another major bridge project has commenced at Miri Marina, with a total cost of RM6.53 billion. 'The government's aspiration is for all these investments to have a direct impact on the state's economic growth through improved infrastructure,' he said. Earlier, Uggah was briefed on the project status by JKR Sarawak director Dr Cassidy Morris, along with the technical leadership from Perbena Emas and the Sebuyau District Office. Premier: Sarawak, Indonesia to jointly develop Kayan River hydropower projects

He said the collaboration was formalised during his official working visit to Jakarta on Tuesday, where he accompanied Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for the 13th Malaysia-Indonesia Annual Consultation. Highlighting the significance of the cross-border cooperation, Abang Johari stressed the need for Sarawakian engineers to work closely with their Indonesian counterparts. 'Sarawak needs more engineers there to collaborate with engineers from Indonesia. This means we will be working beyond Sarawak's borders,' he said during the launch of the Special Financial Aid (BKK) for Sarawakian tertiary students in Kuala Lumpur today. Sarawak rolls out special cash aid for tertiary students, RM50.4 mln allocated

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg during the launch announced that each eligible student will receive RM1,200, disbursed in two phases of RM600 per semester via the S Pay Global platform. Open to all Sarawakian students regardless of household income, the BKK aims to ease the financial burden on families and help students focus on their academic journey. The aid is expected to benefit around 42,000 Sarawakian students currently enrolled in institutions of higher learning nationwide. 'The Sarawak government under Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) has delivered on its promise. This shows that we care, not only about the students as Sarawakians, but because we are a government that is genuinely concerned about the future of our state,' said Abang Johari. Introduced as part of Abang Johari's winding-up speech during the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly sitting in November last year, the assistance was initially targeted at students from households with a per capita income of RM1,500 or below. However, the eligibility has since been broadened to include all full-time diploma and bachelor's degree students with Sarawakian status, regardless of socioeconomic background.
