754 and out – Shubman Gill ends stunning series 20 runs short of Sunil Gavaskar's record

Shubman Gill may have scored just 11 runs in the second innings of the fifth Test, after scoring 21 in the first, which may not be noteworthy numbers but they have brought to an end a stunning series with the bat. Gill has ended the series with a tally of 754 runs, which is the second highest tally of all time for an Indian in any Test series, only behind Sunil Gavaskar's 774 against the mighty West Indies in a five-Test series in 1971. Gavaskar had played only four matches in that series, having made his debut only in the second Test. Gill, meanwhile, has achieved this feat on his debut as India's Test captain. He is also just the third Indian to score more than 700 runs in a single series after Gavaskar and his teammate Yashasvi Jaiswal, who had scored 712 runs in a five-Test series at home against England in 2023/24. Gill's tally is also the second highest for a captain in any Test series, only 56 runs behind the record of 810 held by the legendary Don Bradman, who had scored that against England at home in the 1936/37 Ashes. Conversely, it is the highest score by any Indian captain in a Test series by a margin of of 22 runs – Gavaskar held the record previous for the 732 he scored in the six-Test series against the West Indies in 1978/79. Gill fell in the first innings of the first Test after going for a single that was never there. In the second innings, Gill fell off the very first ball of the second session, being trapped in front of his stumps by an inswinger from Gus Atkinson. The only Tests in which Gill failed to score centuries in this series were both in London – the third Test at Lord's and the fifth Test at the Oval. Gill started the series by scoring a century on his captaincy debut. He scored 147 in his very first innings as the skipper, followed by a score of eight in the second innings. Gill then made merry in the second Test, scoring a record 269 in the first innings and 161 in the second as he powered India to a 336-run win at Edgbaston. He then could only manage scores of 16 and six in the third Test and 12 in the first innings of the fourth before grinding out 103 runs off 238 balls as part of a match-saving effort with KL Rahul. Rahul and Gill batted out nearly 70 overs after which unbeaten centuries by Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar helped India draw the match. This was followed by the 21 and 11 he scored at the Oval.

Kartik Aaryan's team says actor was ‘not associated' with event organised by Pakistani restaurant after FWICE's warning

Actor Kartik Aaryan received a notice from The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) over claims that he was going to be present at an upcoming Independence Day event in Houston, USA. The event was organised by a Pakistani-owned restaurant. The actor's team has now issued a statement clarifying that he was not associated with this event. Kartik Aaryan was last seen in Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3. Official statement from Kartik's team The official statement from Kartik Aaryan's team read: 'Kartik Aaryan is not associated with this event in any capacity. He has never made an official announcement about participating in this event. We have contacted the organizers and requested to remove all promotional materials featuring his name and image." Objection from FWICE The issue began when, in an official letter to Kartik, the FWICE urged the actor to withdraw from the upcoming event. As per Times Now, the letter read, 'It is with a sense of deep concern and responsibility that the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) brings to your notice a matter involving your scheduled participation in an event titled Azadi Utsav-The Indian Independence Day to be held in Houston, USA, on 15th August 2025. As per the attached poster, you are being featured as the lead guest for this celebration. While such events are a source of pride and cultural expression for Indians abroad, we regret to inform you that this specific program is being organized by a Pakistani-owned restaurant, Aga's Restaurant and Catering, owned by Mr. Shaukat Maredia.' The letter continued, 'The same restaurant and its associates are also organizing a concert featuring Pakistani singer Atil Aslam and are promoting Jashn-e-Azadi, a celebration of Pakistan's Independence Day. The simultaneous promotion of Indian and Pakistani national events by the same establishment not only creates a conflict of interest but also violates the ongoing national sentiment and directives.' 'We believe you may not have been fully aware of the organisers' background or affiliations. If so, we strongly urge you to immediately withdraw your participation from this event. However, if you were aware, it becomes a matter of even greater concern and we expect a clarification and immediate distancing from such associations. We are confident that you, as one of the most influential and respected faces of today's Indian cinema, will act in a manner that aligns with national sentiment, the dignity of the Indian film industry, and your own stellar reputation. We look forward to your responsible and timely response on this matter,' concluded the statement. On the work front, Kartik was last seen in the horror-comedy Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3. Fans will see him next in Anurag Basu's next, which will also star Sreeleela.

Akash Deep Slams Maiden Test Fifty To Script History, Joins Shane Warne In Elite List For Rare Test Record

Akash Deep frustrated England with the bat and scripted history after scoring his maiden Test half-century on Day 3 of the fifth Test of the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at The Oval on Saturday. Sent in as a nightwatchman late on day two, Akash Deep resumed his innings at the score of 4 on day three and played an extraordinary knock in the first session, scoring 66 off 94 balls with the help of 12 boundaries. He was eventually dismissed by Jamie Overton towards the end of the first session with a short ball. Akash Deep's 66 is the second-highest score by an Indian nightwatchman in Test cricket. Notably, the highest score by an Indian nightwatchman is Amit Mishra's 84 against England, which the leg-spinner hit at the same venue in 2011. Highest Scores By Indian Nightwatchmen In Test Cricket 84 - Amit Mishra vs England, Oval, 2011 66 - Akash Deep vs England, Oval, 2025 54 - Chetan Sharma vs Australia, Adelaide, 1985 50 - Amit Mishra vs Bangladesh - Chattogram, 2010 After his fantastic half-century, Akash Deep joined legendary Shane Warne in an elite list. The 28-year-old became only the second man after Shane Warne this century to score a fifty and take a 10-wicket haul in England as an opposition player. Former Australia spinner Warne achieved this rare feat in 2005. Interestingly, there are only five instances of an Asian player achieving this double in a SENA country.
