My date saw nothing wrong with him and his mum's sleeping arrangement
'This is where I sleep', he said. Without blinking, he moved his hand to the mattress on the right.
A part of me knew what he was going to say next and I felt a panic rise in me.
'…and this is where Mummy sleeps'. Alarm bells were ringing so loudly they were all I could hear.
The Oedipus complex was very real.
When we arrived at his house earlier that night, Will said his mum was out, but that I would most likely meet her later.
I hadn't expected to meet a parent so soon – this was only our second date – and by the end of the house tour, I was thoroughly shaken.
I don't know what compelled me to stay except a morbid curiosity to meet the woman who had borne such a weirdly attached son.

Will was pouring himself a whiskey, when his mum abruptly entered.
I immediately stood up to greet her, but she didn't exactly shake my hand back. In fact, she ignored me and instead, picked up an ironing board, bundle of clothing and began ironing – with a face like thunder.
I sat back down, confused – I didn't react, I was taken aback and sat in awkward silence.
'Mummy, don't be rude to my guest!' Will slurred.
She stormed off upstairs to their bedroom.
It takes a lot to make me uncomfortable, but this scene was undeniably awkward.
I couldn't believe what was happening. I was merely trying to go on a sweet and innocent date – how did I end up here?
Earlier that month, as I was weaving through a dive venue with a pint, someone stumbled in my periphery. I turned around to apologise and was met with a twenty-something wearing an outrageously expensive suit.
A little incongruous for this gig, it wasn't really the dress code.
But instead of turning away, he started to engage in conversation. He was handsome, so I let it happen.
He theatrically pretended to be blown away by my perfume – 'you smell incredible! What is that?!' he yelled over the music.
I replied that it was Dolce & Gabbana's 'Light Blue', which I had doused myself in for a date – but I was there alone.
It had been six long months of singledom and I was ready to date again. I met a friend of a friend on a night out, and organised this date with him. But, standing there on the night, I realised he wasn't going to turn up.
And I must admit, I was enjoying Will's attention. He asked me about my 'situation', to which I honestly answered, 'single'.

This gave him the signal he needed and he leaned in – we shared an electric and passionate kiss and swapped numbers. I soon forgot about being stood up.
After a week of messaging, we met for a date in Soho. We sat at the bar mixing all our drinks and got tipsy quickly.
The conversation flowed and we laughed a lot. At that point, I thought he was a promising date and I could see myself with him.
I noticed Will talked about his mum a lot, and at first, I admired his respect for her. When I brought up his dad, he brushed him off as an 'idiot father' with a grimace. He didn't want to talk about him, so I continued to listen about his saint mother.
The date ended with a kiss and when I arrived home, Will had messaged: 'let's do this again soon?'
I fancied him and was looking forward to lining up a second date.
The following week, Will was waiting for me at the Tube station and walked us to a bustling nearby pub. We still had chemistry, laughter and good conversation – so I ignored the potential mummy issues I clocked on the first date.
After last orders, Will suggested drinks and a tour of his fixer-upper home. He claimed to be able to make a mean whiskey cocktail and had all the ingredients, so I accepted the invite – the pace felt right.
I knew I should have fled after the bedroom tour and I regretted not going with my gut. But the time had finally come and I politely made my excuse to head home.
I was freaked out. I told a couple of close friends whose jaws hit the floor.
So I was surprised when Will texted me three weeks after the second date, the day before Valentine's Day with 'I don't have time to be your boyfriend, but we could be friends with benefits?'
His busy schedule was the least of my concerns. I could have ghosted but courteously declined his booty call request and never saw him again.
This experience, while a great story, has taught me to be more discerning when dating.
I was younger then, but now, I'm not afraid to ask questions if a guy presents an amber flag. More Trending
In this case, although there's nothing wrong with having a close relationship with your mother, there's a line between healthy and unhinged.
There are limits to everything and my limit was Will.

Another EastEnders couple ripped apart as wicked Cindy causes more trouble
Wicked Cindy Beale (Michelle Collins) wreaks further havoc on her son Peter Beale's (Thomas Law) relationship with Lauren Branning (Jacqueline Jossa) in EastEnders next week. The couple have had their ups and downs in recent months, having been torn apart as they processed their newborn son Jimmy's sight impairment in very different ways. Amid their turmoil, Lauren kissed former flameZack Hudson (James Farrar), who himself had been through the emotional wringer thanks to his feud with the Mitchells over son Barney (Lewis Bridgeman). So far, their clinch has remained a secret. Enter Cindy. Next week, sinful Cindy gets a hunch that something is going on between arch enemy Lauren and Zack – and wastes no time in using it to her advantage. It comes as Lauren and Peter start to get closer again, as she turns to him for reassurances about Jimmy's diagnosis. Lauren later finds Peter taking a guitar lesson from Jay Brown (Jamie Borthwick) after finding out that his playing helped soothe Jimmy. Jay gives Peter some food for thought when he advises him to stop looking back and move on with Lauren and their children. Meanwhile, Cindy spots Lauren and Zack sharing a hug, and goes to ex Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt) with her suspicions that they are having an affair. As Lauren and Peter enjoy a family picnic together in the Square gardens, they bond as they tell their other son Louie about Jimmy's blindness. However, Cindy soon arrives and makes a huge accusation, which eventually forces Lauren to admit that she kissed Zack. Things are tense the following day when Lauren and Peter receive a set of results about Jimmy's blindness that confirms it has been caused by a genetic mutation, not Lauren's opioid addiction. More Trending As they take the news in, a row breaks out – and with tempers flared, Peter later takes his anger out on Zack and hits him. But Lauren and Peter soon have much bigger things to worry about when they return home and find that Louie and Jimmy are both missing. What has happened to the young brothers? Vinny horrified as major Emmerdale legend overhears private moment with Kammy
A new friendship for Vinny Dingle (Bradley Johnson) turned to confusion on Emmerdale recently when Vinny got carried away and tried to kiss his friend Kammy Hadiq (Shebz Miah). Kammy is confident, relaxed and reckless – all the things Vinny isn't, basically. So when they spent an afternoon getting revenge on a delivery driver who'd made some pointed comments to Vinny, he was swept away by the excitement and fun they were having. He leaned in to kiss Kammy, who didn't reciprocate. They then tried to brush the whole thing off as being a joke. 'Kammy isn't bothered about the kiss, he more feels for Vinny,' Shebz Miah confirmed. 'Kammy's so relaxed. Kammy's so confident in his sexuality. It's more that he wants to offer a helping hand, because it's a very tricky situation now that Vinny's in. We've got Gabs on one hand, then all the other stuff in Vinny's life and how does it affect that?' With Vinny's wedding to Gabby Thomas (Rosie Bentham) coming up soon, Vinny is now feeling incredibly anxious about what happened with Kammy, particularly after Gabby insists that Kammy is on the guest list for the wedding. When Vinny has to take Gabby's car to the garage to be serviced, he can't avoid Kammy any longer. As they talk, Gabby passes by on the phone with Laurel (Charlotte Bellamy) and there's a glitch in the call that means Laurel can hear everything Kammy and Vinny are talking about. It's not long before Laurel demands a private word with Vinny and he's naturally nervous about what Gabby's step-mum might be about to say. Knowing that Gabby has previously had her heart broken when former fiancé Nicky Miligan (Lewis Cope) jilted her on their wedding day after admitting he was gay, Laurel is obviously worried that history could be about to repeat itself. For Vinny's sake as much as Gabby's she begs him to consider carefully whether he's absolutely sure about the relationship with Gabby. She says if he has any doubts, he shouldn't go ahead. Rosie Bentham told us that potentially Gabby would be more devastated if this wedding didn't happen than she was with Nicky. More Trending 'I think this one would hit even deeper because it is someone that she genuinely has feelings for and has developed a very strong connection with,' she reflected. 'I think if Vinny is questioning things and really struggling, some communication needs to happen. But this stuff with Kammy, I don't know how it would be initially received. In a social media post on Friday, the 31-year-old singer told his followers that his vocal cords were checked over by his ENT doctor earlier in the week. Although they were 'slightly swollen' the Seventeen Going Under hitmaker was told he would be okay to carry on playing his shows. During his headline act opening the British Grand Prix at Silverstone on Thursday evening, the chart-topper had put on an incredible show, singing his big hits and a few songs from his new album, People Watching to F1 fans. He continued: 'I felt I needed I had to push a lot harder to sing – this is never a good sign.' He went on to break the devastating news that, after another ENT checkup, he had a haemorrhage on one of his vocal cords, forcing him to cancel several upcoming gigs. This includes his performances at Roch Werchter, Down the Rabbit Hole, NOS Live and Montreux Jazz Festivals. The music artist explained that if was to sing he could risk 'lasting damage' to his vocal cords. Sam has been very transparent about his previous mental health struggles, especially through Covid – and has been praised by many for rising above toxic masculinity and being a great role model by speaking out. The People Watching star has also suffered physical health problems: respiratory infections, laryngitis, and tonsillitis – which resulted in him having to cancel shows over the years. Fans were gutted Sam did not appear at Glastonbury this year after rampant rumours suggesting he would play a secret set. The fan-favourite singer released his third studio album, People Watching, in February of this year. Sam has since begun his People Watching tour, selling out huge venues like the London Stadium and his very own stomping ground, St James Park. His tour has got lots of media attention, especially on TikTok, making his fan base grow rapidly. Olivia Dean was his chosen support act and he actually brought her out on stage to sing 'Rein Me In' back in June at London Stadium. The pair have since joined forces to release the duet which has over 4 million streams on Spotify, after only two weeks of it being out. More Trending The South Shields-born hit-maker isn't the only singer who has had to take a step back from performing due to vocal cord issues. John Bon Jovi, 61, recently underwent surgery on his vocal cords – one of the cords was ' literally atrophied' and Bon Jovi found a surgeon who was willing to use a transplant to build it back up. Similarly to Sam, Kesha rocked out so hard on stage at the Taylor Hawkins tribute concert that she haemorrhaged her vocal cords. Sir Tom Jones has also spoken out about his struggles with controlling his voice as he ages 'The older you get, the less control you have over your vocal cords.' Got a story?
