JERTIH, July 27 (Bernama) -- Police have successfully solved three robbery cases that occurred in several villages in the Besut district after arresting a man in a raid in Kampung Gong Medang here, last Monday. (July 21)
Besut district police chief Supt Azamuddin Ahmad @ Abu said the 32-year-old suspect, who was suspected of being involved in knife-wielding robberies since last month, was arrested by a team from the Criminal Investigation Division of the Besut district police headquarters (IPD).
'The suspect was arrested following three robberies involving three female victims, all of whom were food deliverers between June 24 and July 20.
'The suspect's modus operandi was to identify female vendors who provided delivery service and would give addresses at unoccupied houses in remote areas in Kampung Gong Medang and Kampung Tembila,' he told reporters at a press conference at the Besut IPD here today.
Azamuddin said when the victim arrived at the given location, the suspect would approach the victim's car and brandish a knife before robbing the victim's jewellery.
He added, the suspect managed to rob the jewellery belonging to the first and second victims, involving an estimated loss of RM30,000 and RM200 in cash.
'However, the suspect failed to rob the third victim because the victim resisted, causing the victim to suffer injuries to both hands,' he said.
Azamuddin said following the arrest, the police also managed to seize two melted gold bars weighing 82.26 grammes believed to belong to two victims, a Honda City and two mobile phones belonging to the suspect.
He added that checks found that the suspect had a past criminal record related to robbery and was tested negative for drugs.

Afghan family fails in bid to enter Malaysia using fake visas

PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) has thwarted an attempt by four Afghan nationals, believed to be members of the same family, to enter Malaysia using fake visas. According to AKPS, the four individuals – a man and three women – were among 132 foreigners checked during a monitoring and document screening operation at KLIA Terminal 1 recently. It said the four were spotted wandering in the terminal area, which made the KLIA Terminal 1 Monitoring Unit suspicious. "Based on initial investigations, the four arrived in Malaysia on July 24 at 9.20pm but failed to report to the Immigration counter within the specified time. "It is learnt that they had been in the terminal area for four days without going through (the arrival) process," AKPS said in a statement on Tuesday (July 29). AKPS said further checks on their travel documents revealed that the visas were fake. "All of them admitted that they had never set foot in Uzbekistan, supposedly as a transit point, and the fake visas were obtained through an agent for a fee of US$6,000 (RM25,386)," the statement read. As such, AKPS said, the individuals were denied entry and will be deported to their country of origin on Wednesday (July 30). – Bernama

Kopitiam owner claims trial to bribery charge

JOHOR BARU: A 23-year-old kopitiam owner claimed trial at the Sessions Court here today to a charge of bribing a local council enforcement officer to avoid action against his premises. Tan Kai Dee, who owns a kopitiam in Taman Mutiara Mas, Skudai, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read out before Judge Datuk Ahmad Kamal Arifin Ismail. According to the charge sheet, Tan allegedly handed RM2,000 in cash to an enforcement assistant from the Iskandar Puteri City Council (MBIP) as an inducement to avoid enforcement action under Section 47(1)(a) of the Street, Drainage and Building Act 1974, which prohibits modifications to drains without written permission from the council. The offence was allegedly committed at the restaurant at 6.20pm on Nov 4 last year. He was charged under Section 17(b) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, which is punishable under Section 24(1) of the same Act. If convicted, he faces a jail term of up to 20 years and a fine of no less than five times the bribe amount or RM10,000, whichever is higher. MACC deputy public prosecutor Ameera D'aneez Mohd Shukari requested that bail be set at RM10,000, with additional conditions to prevent the accused from fleeing. Tan's counsel, K. Barathi, urged for a lower amount, citing that his client supports his wife and both parents. The court allowed bail at RM10,000 with one local surety and imposed two additional conditions: Tan must report to the Mutiara Rini police station once a month and surrender his passport to the court. The case has been fixed for mention on Sept 17 for document submission.

Sarawak Energy busts remote crypto mining electricity theft in Marudi

Cryptocurrency mining servers located in the premises, operated using stolen electricity. KUCHING (July 29): Sarawak Energy, through its operations and retail arm Syarikat Sesco Berhad (Sesco), recently uncovered a case of electricity theft involving cryptocurrency mining at an abandoned wooden house in Lubok Nibong, Marudi. According to a press release, the property was hidden deep in a remote area in an attempt to deliberately avoid detection. However, the illegal operation was exposed during routine inspection works by Sesco's technical team. Further investigations discovered direct tapping cables illegally connected from a nearby overhead pole, bypassing the meter and supplying electricity to three cryptocurrency mining servers. All mining equipment on site was seized, and a police report has been lodged. The individuals responsible may face severe consequences under Section 33(5) of the Electricity Ordinance, which carries fines of up to RM200,000 and/or imprisonment for up to five years upon conviction. Electricity theft linked to cryptocurrency mining operations poses a growing threat to the power grid. These unauthorised connections significantly overload the system, risking power disruptions to nearby homes and businesses. Such setups are also highly dangerous as they can cause fires, damage electrical equipment and endanger lives. As part of its continuous anti-power theft efforts, Sarawak Energy actively monitors abandoned properties and rural locations. Inspection teams are trained and equipped to detect various forms of electricity theft. Members of the public are encouraged to report any suspicious activities related to electricity supply. Reports can be made anonymously via Sarawak Energy's Customer Care Centre at 1300-88-3111, by email at [email protected] or through the SEB cares mobile app. All information provided will be treated in strict confidence. cryptocurrency electricity theft lead Sarawak Energy
