Despite Bounou's Heroics, Fluminense Beat Al Hilal to Reach Club World Cup Semifinals

Morocco World2 days ago
Rabat – Brazilian side Fluminense have advanced to the semifinals of the Club World Cup after a hard-fought 2-1 win over Saudi Arabia's Al Hilal at the Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida, today.
The match kicked off with both teams struggling to create clear chances, and it took until the 40th minute for Fluminense to break the deadlock through Martinelli.
Right before the break, Al Hilal thought they had a chance to equalize when the referee awarded them a penalty after Leonardo went down in the box. However, the VAR ruled there was no foul.
Al Hilal came back stronger in the second half. They leveled the score in the 51st minute when defender Kalidou Koulibaly headed the ball down in the box, and Leonardo smashed it in from close range.
But Fluminense weren't done. Just 19 minutes later, Hercules scored the winning goal. His first shot was blocked, but he kept pushing and managed to slot the ball into the bottom corner, making it 2-1.
Al Hilal had a few more chances to score but couldn't find the net again. One of the main reasons they stayed in the game as long as they did was their goalkeeper, Yassine Bounou. He made several important saves, including a key one-on-one stop against Fluminense's Cano. Without him, the score could have been worse for the Saudi side. That said, Al Hilal's defense showed some worrying gaps, especially in the build-up to both goals.
Despite the loss, Al Hilal showed moments of quality, especially through Leonardo and Milinkovic-Savic, but it wasn't enough to overcome Fluminense's determined performance. Tags: Club World CupFootballyassine bounou

Mourinho Holds Firm on En-Nesyri

Fenerbahçe have reinforced their attacking line with the loan signing of Colombian forward Jhon Durán from Saudi side Al-Nassr while sticking to the Moroccan striker Youssef En-Nesyri. Durán, 21, joins on a season-long deal with an option to buy, in a move aimed at bolstering José Mourinho's forward options rather than replacing En-Nesyri. Despite attracting significant interest from clubs in the Gulf, En-Nesyri remains central to Fenerbahçe's plans following a prolific 30-goal season, according to TRT Spor . The club are understood to have no intention of selling the 28-year-old unless an 'astronomical' offer lands on the desk. Signed for a club-record €19.5m, En-Nesyri is under contract until 2029 and is seen as essential to Mourinho's side despite criticism earlier and towards the end of the season after an extended goal drought and some lacklustre performances. According to transfer guru Fabricio Romano, Durán arrives in Istanbul just months after his high-profile €77m move from Aston Villa to Al-Nassr. While the striker showed promise in the Saudi Pro League with eight goals in 13 appearances, he struggled to fully settle. Fenerbahçe have paid a reported €7m loan fee, with Durán expected to earn €15m over the course of the season. The Turkish club also hold an option to make the transfer permanent until 2030. The signing offers Mourinho tactical variety, allowing the Portuguese coach to rotate between the two strikers or partner them both in a two-forward game plan. Fenerbahçe fans will hope the new partnership helps deliver the silverware that has eluded them in recent seasons. Fenerbahçe last won the Turkish Süper Lig title in the 2013–14 season. It's been over a decade since they lifted the league trophy – something the club, and José Mourinho in particular, will be desperate to put right. Tags: En-NesyriFenerbahceMourinho

Morocco and Zambia draw in thrilling Women's AFCON opener in Rabat

The Moroccan women's national football team drew 2-2 with Zambia on Saturday evening at the Rabat Olympic Stadium, in their opening match of Group A at the 2024 Africa Women's Cup of Nations (AWCON), hosted in Morocco. The Lionesses of the Atlas were caught off guard by an early goal from Barbra Banda in the first minute, but the team, coached by Spain's Jorge Vilda, remained unfazed. They pushed forward to level the score, with early chances from Nouhaila Benzina (4') and Ghizlane Chebbak (5'). Their efforts were rewarded in the 12th minute, when Ibtissam Jraidi converted a penalty awarded after a VAR review. The equalizer boosted the confidence of the Moroccan side, who took control of the game and looked to go ahead. But it was Zambia who struck next, with Racheal Kundananji finding the net in the 27th minute. Zambia kept the pressure on with long balls behind the Moroccan defense, nearly breaking through again before halftime, but goalkeeper Khadija Er-Rmichi came up big in a one-on-one with Barbra Banda in stoppage time (45+1'). After the break, the Lionesses of the Atlas played more boldly in attack, particularly down the flanks. Substituting Yasmin M'Rabet, Sanaa Mssoudy (63') brought fresh energy and helped stretch the Zambian defense. Morocco looked more dangerous in the second half, creating several chances thanks to the lively Sanaa Mssoudy and the ever-reliable Fatima Tagnaout. Their persistence paid off when team captain Ghizlane Chebbak scored the equalizer in the 87th minute, bringing the score to 2-2. The opening ceremony of the 2024 Women's AFCON, held from July 5 to 26 in Morocco, featured a dazzling sound and light show, complete with fireworks. The highlight of the night was a performance by Moroccan singer Jaylann, who electrified the crowd with her latest hit. The match was attended by prominent figures including CAF President Patrice Motsepe; Morocco's Minister of National Education, Preschool and Sports, Mohamed Saad Berrada; Minister of Youth, Culture and Communication, Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid; FRMF President Fouzi Lekjaa; and other CAF officials.

FIFA hails Yassine Bounou as one of the greatest modern goalkeepers

After making waves against Real Madrid and Manchester City at the 2025 Club World Cup, Yassine Bounou has further cemented his status as «one of the greatest goalkeepers of the modern era», the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) proudly declared. In an article dedicated to the Moroccan international, FIFA highlighted that the Al Hilal shot-stopper has «proven himself time and again». Bounou has «left his mark on unforgettable matches», delivering heroic performances in FIFA competitions and once again rising to the occasion on the global stage. Nicknamed «the Spider», he led his Saudi club to the quarter-finals with a dramatic 4–3 victory over Manchester City, an achievement FIFA notes in its reflection that «a good goalkeeper is often half the team». «With his exploits in decisive matches, Bounou has transcended the traditional role of a goalkeeper to become the architect of historic moments etched in football history», the article continues, referencing Morocco's historic win over Spain in the 2022 World Cup (0–0, 3–0 on penalties). In that match, Bounou saved penalties from Carlos Soler and Sergio Busquets and made two crucial saves in regular and extra time, helping Morocco reach the quarter-finals for the first time ever. In the quarter-final against Portugal, which Morocco won 1–0, Bounou delivered another stellar performance, denying three dangerous shots, including a powerful strike from João Félix, to keep a clean sheet for the second consecutive game. The victory made Morocco the first Arab and African nation to reach a World Cup semi-final. At the 2025 Club World Cup, Bounou again made headlines, saving a late penalty against Real Madrid to help Al Hilal earn a crucial point. He registered five saves in that match, four from inside the box, against top talents like Vinícius Jr. and Gonzalo García. Just days later, Bounou donned his «superhero cape» once again, making 11 saves, eight of them from inside the box, against Manchester City in a stunning 4–3 extra-time win that propelled Al Hilal into the next round. FIFA also recalled his heroics in the 2023 UEFA Europa League final with Sevilla FC against AS Roma. With the match tied 1–1 after extra time, Bounou emerged as the hero in the penalty shootout, saving attempts from Gianluca Mancini and Roger Ibañez with unshakable composure. His performance not only secured Sevilla's seventh Europa League title but also earned him the Man of the Match award.
