Current Steelers No. 72 wearers: OG Doug Nester, DL Esezi Otomewo
Both Nester and Otomewo currently wear No. 72 for the Pittsburgh Steelers — a situation that's pretty common during the offseason.
After spending the 2024 season on the Steelers' practice squad, Nester signed a Reserve/Future contract with Pittsburgh this past January. He'll likely be given the opportunity to compete with Max Scharping and Spencer Anderson for the backup guard spot.
Otomewo signed a one-year deal with the Steelers last March. He has nine games of NFL experience, including two starts during his 2024 tenure with the Jaguars. He offers solid depth as both a capable pass rusher and run defender — but faces an uphill battle after Pittsburgh acquired multiple defensive linemen in the 2025 NFL Draft and free agency.

Best No. 72 in Steelers history: OG Gerry 'Moon' Mullins
Mullins was selected by the Steelers with the 86th overall pick in the fourth round of the 1971 NFL Draft. He played for Pittsburgh from 1971 to 1979 — winning four Super Bowls in the process. He played an important role in the Steelers' Super Bowl X victory over the Cowboys, recovering Dallas' onside kick attempt with 1:48 remaining. Mullins was selected to the Steelers' 50th Anniversary Team and was inducted into the Steelers Hall of Honor. He served as one of the most dependable offensive linemen of his era and is, without a doubt, the best to ever don the No. 72 in Pittsburgh.

Their uncle, Tom McConnell, was also a college basketball coach at Indiana University Pennsylvania. Later on, she had a standout college career. She played at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. While there, McConnell set records in assists (660), steals (370), games played (144), games started (136), and triple-doubles (4). In addition, she was a two-time Atlantic 10 All-Conference First Team selection and won the 2025 Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Year. Advertisement McConnell's prospects for the future are unknown. Even though she was not drafted, the Mercury took a chance on McConnell during a treacherous period. The string of injuries affecting the Mercury Despite an 11-4 record, the Mercury have been hobbled by injuries this year. So in truth, McConnell was not an isolation incident. Key players including Kahleah Copper, Alyssa Thomas, and Natasha Mack had to power through injuries. In May, Copper had to undergo left knee arthroscopy and missed 4-6 weeks. That same month, Thomas sustained a calf injury. In mid June, Mack was hobbled with a back injury. On Thursday, guard Lexi Held was diagnosed with a pneumothorax lung injury. Advertisement The entire context of injuries has forced the Mercury to change rotations, rely on their bench, and to sign undrafted rookies such as McConnell. Alabama lands commitment from local standout, 2026 in-state linebacker
On Friday night, the Alabama Crimson Tide landed a commitment from a local product, as in-state standout Zay Hall announced that he had committed to the program. Hall is the sixth different player to commit to Alabama so far this week, as well as the third within the past two days alongside the four-star duo of Ezavier Crowell and Mack Sutter. At the moment, Hall is currently considered as the nation's No. 1,148 overall prospect in the 2026 recruiting class, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. A three-star prospect, Hall is also ranked as the nation's No. 127 overall linebacker, as well as the No. 55 player in the state of Alabama where he attends Hillcrest High School in Tuscaloosa. The three-star prospect is the first linebacker commit in Alabama's class, as well as the fourth from in-state where he is joined by the aforementioned Crowell (Jackson), Zyan Gibson (Gadsden City), and Kamhariyan Johnson (Muscle Shoals). James Harrison says Steelers could cut Aaron Rodgers midseason under one condition
Everyone has an opinion on what the Aaron Rodgers-led Steelers are capable of — but the legendary James Harrison might've just dropped the boldest prediction yet. On a recent episode of the Nightcap podcast, Harrison argued that Rodgers could be released — under one condition: Pittsburgh starts losing. "If [the Steelers] start losing and it's looking like they ain't gonna make above .500, I think it gets real ugly, real fast," Harrison said. "To the point where they may just be like, 'You know what, let's let this dude go midseason. For Aaron, let's just get him outta here and put one of these other quarterbacks in.' Mike [Tomlin] ain't going nowhere." While midseason struggles leading to a major change under center aren't unheard of — releasing Rodgers seems extremely unlikely, especially if his mentorship of rookie Will Howard continues to show positive signs of growth. Rodgers has been candid about his likely retirement after 2025 — but if Harrison's prediction comes to fruition, his career may not end on his terms after all.
