Exclusive: Sonakshi Sinha Reacts To Rs 1.2 Lakh Prada Kolhapuri Chappals, "The Prices Are Ridiculous"

NDTV3 days ago

New Delhi:
Luxury fashion house Prada is under the spotlight for its latest footwear drop, a pair of leather sandals calling it 'the toe ring sandal' that bear a striking resemblance to India's traditional Kolhapuri chappals - with a price tag of approximately Rs 1.2 lakh.
The internet is split. While some are calling it cultural appreciation, others argue it borders on appropriation, especially with no mention of the chappals' Indian roots.
In an exclusive conversation with NDTV, Sonakshi Sinha shared her thoughts, "It's always great whenever any part of India is on the global map. It's a big deal for all of us. It's very exciting news that Prada has done Kolhapuri chappals. As Indians, we feel very very proud which is great, but the prices are a bit ridiculous. So, it balances the situation."
The original Kolhapuri chappals, handcrafted by artisans in Maharashtra for over a century, are known for their durability, detailed stitching, and heritage leatherwork. Usually priced between Rs 500 and Rs 5,000, depending on the intricacy and quality, they're a staple in Indian fashion and deeply rooted in cultural identity.
Online reactions range from bemused to outraged.
One user wrote, "Rs 1.2 lakh and not even a 'Kolhapuri' mention?"
Another asked, "When will Indian artisans get this level of recognition and compensation?"
While Prada hasn't officially labelled the pair as Kolhapuris, the resemblance is undeniable. The debate once again highlights the need for global fashion brands to acknowledge the origins of traditional designs not just aesthetically, but with credit and context.
As Indian craftsmanship quietly continues to inspire the world, the conversation around representation, pricing, and proper attribution is louder than ever and it's one worth having.

Box Office: Maa scores good results in opening weekend, Kajol starrer collects Rs 17.25 crore in 3 day

Maa, starring Kajol in the lead role, is holding up well at the box office. The mytho-horror drama, directed by Vishal Furia, has met with mixed bag reactions, but managed to impress with its folklore and horror factor. Maa clocks Rs 6.50 crore on Day 3, approaches Rs 20 crore mark Bankrolled by Devgn Films and Panorama Studios, Maa debuted with Rs 4.75 crore on its debut day. The movie further witnessed a good jump of 26% and collected Rs 6 crore on Day 2. As per estimates, the mytho-horror drama saw another jump of 10% today and added Rs 6.50 crore to the tally. The total three-day cume of Maa now stands at Rs 17.25 crore net at the Indian box office. Though this is an impressive figure for a Kajol starrer, the movie could have performed much better had it opened to superlative word-of-mouth. Moreover, one cannot ignore that the makers lured the audience with a BUY-TWO-GET-ONE-FREE offer on the tickets. The real test of Maa will begin from Monday onwards. If the movie manages to hold well and register a reasonable drop, it can see a long run at the box office. Maa faces tough competition from Sitaare Zameen Par and F1 (Formula One) Though Maa had better screens than Brad Pitt's F1 (Formula One), it still remained behind. The Kajol starrer also faced a major dent by Aamir Khan's holdover release, Sitaare Zameen Par, which witnessed a 100% growth from its second Friday to second Saturday. It will be interesting to see how Maa performs further on the weekdays. It will have a new competition from next weekend onwards as Anurag Basu's romantic drama, Metro…In Dino, is slated to hit the screens on July 4th. Breaking: Paresh Rawal returns to Hera Pheri 3 as Babu Rao, comments on his controversy with Akshay Kumar

Hera Pheri 3 hit a major roadblock when Paresh Rawal, who played the iconic role of Babu Bhaiya, stepped back from the movie and indulged in a legal war with Producer Akshay Kumar. Things went ugly when Akshay Kumar sent him a legal notice of Rs 25 crore for breaching the contract and leaving the movie in the middle. However, here comes some good news for all Hera Pheri fans! Paresh Rawal returns as Babu Bhaiya in Hera Pheri 3, says things are resolved Paresh Rawal has been hitting the headlines ever since he backed out of Hera Pheri 3. However, things are back on track as the actor has resolved all the issues with Akshay Kumar and the production banner. In a recent podcast at The Himanshu Mehta Show, Paresh Rawal opened up on the infamous controversy and revealed that everything is now in place. He said, "Mera yahi hai ki jab cheez itni zyda logon ko bhaati hai toh you need to be extra careful. It is our responsibility for the audience, kyunki audience baithi hai itna pyaar karti hai. You can't take things for granted. Mehnat karke unko do." (My point is that when something reaches so many people, you need to be extra careful. It is our responsibility towards the audience because the audience is sitting here and loves it so much. You can't take things lightly. Do hard work and deliver.) Further, he mentioned that all issues are resolved. "To mera yahi hai ki bhaiya sab aaye saath me sab mehnat kar, bas aur kuch nahi. Resolved. Hua kuch nahi hai! It is all resolved. (So my point is that Bhaiya, everyone should come together and work hard, nothing else. It is resolved. Nothing has happened! It is all resolved.)" The actor went on to add that Hera Pheri 3 will 100% return to the big screens. He quipped, "Pahle bhi aane hi wali thi, lekin kya hai ki ek dusre ko thoda fine tune karna padta hai. (laughs). First of all, all of them are creative people... Like Priyadarshan hai, Akshay hai yaa Sunil hai, they all are friends for many many years. (It was happening earlier also, but the thing is that one has to fine-tune the other a little. (laughs). First of all, all of them are creative people... Like Priyadarshan, Akshay, or Sunil, they have all been friends for many, many years.) As the OMG actor himself confirmed his return to the franchise. Fans are expecting a banger movie with the OG trio of Hera Pheri 3 - Akshay Kumar, Paresh Rawal, and Suniel Shetty, with Priyadarshan helming the threequel. Stay tuned to Pinkvilla for more!
