District level control room established in Thoothukudi to guide class XII students into higher education
As part of the school education department's initiative for the 2024-2025 academic year, 'college dream' (Kalluri Kanavu) a higher education guidance programme under the 'Naan Mudhalvan' scheme was conducted on Monday in Thoothukudi. The event was conducted for motivating students who have passed their class XII exams to pursue college.
Mr. Elambahavath who presided over the event, emphasised the importance of higher education among the students. He said that the 'college dream' (Kalluri Kanavu) programme had already been conducted in April, even before the class XII exams results were released, with the motive of giving students first hand exposure to various colleges, their academic programmes, facilities and infrastructure.
He added that based on the data from the Tamil Nadu school Education Department, 1,408 students had been identified in the district, who needed special attention. These include school dropouts, economically weaker students and those who had lost their parents.
Out of the 1,408 students, 762 had already applied for various college courses, while the remaining 646 students were yet to apply, he noted.
Mr. Elambahavath stressed that the headmasters and teachers must work together to identify these students, explain to them the significance of higher education and ensure they apply to college. He added, 'our target is to achieve 100% enrolment of all students who have passed class XII into higher education.
He further mentioned that the district level control room for higher education assistance would guide the students and ensure that they had chosen courses that match their score.
District Chief Educational Officer Ganeshamoorthy, and officials from educational and other departments were present at the event.

Kalloori Kanavu initiative sees rise in college enrolment among government school students in Coimbatore
Coimbatore Kalloori Kanavu, a career guidance initiative under the Naan Mudhalvan programme of the Tamil Nadu Government, aims to improve higher education enrolment among government school students. The programme provides information on career paths and higher education options, facilitates access to education loans and scholarships, and offers personalised counselling. In Coimbatore district, the camp was conducted in seven phases, with 3,304 select students and their parents participating. As a follow-up, 116 nodal officers from various departments were appointed—one for each government higher secondary school in the district—under the leadership of District Collector Pavankumar G. Giriyappanavar to visit schools and identify students who had passed Plus Two but had not applied for higher education. Their efforts led to 38 students joining colleges, with tuition fees amounting to ₹4 lakh covered by government officials and sponsors. Among them were two students from Velliangadu village. S. Mallika, a student belonging to the Scheduled Tribe community who scored 526 marks, was admitted to PSG College of Arts and Science, facilitated by the District Collector. 'There were two students who were the first from their village to complete Class 12. Mallika has been admitted to PSG College of Arts and Science and her entire course is free. Devika, the other student, has cleared NEET and is awaiting counselling. We are pushing hard to identify such students and make all efforts to ensure they pursue higher education,' said Mr. Giriyappanavar. According to officials, the enrolment rate among students who passed Class XII in Coimbatore district rose from 83% in 2023 to 93% in 2024. This year, the process is ongoing and has reached 98%, so far. Of the 10,301 students who cleared the exam, 121 are yet to apply for any course. An additional 636 students are taking supplementary exams, after which their progress will also be monitored.

Two boats from Thoothukudi stranded near Sri Lankan border, rescue efforts on
A mechanised fishing boat from Tharuvaikulam and a rescue vessel from Thoothukudi, both of which had drifted into the Sri Lankan waters after suffering mechanical failures, are awaiting for the rescue boats to tow them back. A mechanised boat bearing the registration number IND TN 12 MM 6919 from Tharuvaikulam had ventured into sea on June 15, with 11 members on board. On June 27 (Friday), while fishing in the northeastern waters off the coast of Kanniyakumari, the vessel came to halt due to gearbox failure. Upon receiving information about the stranded vessel and after obtaining getting a NOC from the Fisheries Department, a rescue team comprising nine members departed from Thoothukudi on Friday evening in a boat with the registration number IND TN 12 MM 6625, in an attempt to retrieve the stranded vessel. However, during the towing operation, the boat from Thoothukudi also suffered an unexpected mechanical failure and became stranded. When both the vessels did not return to shores as expected on Saturday, the District Administration and Fisheries Department were alerted. As the boats were drifted to the Sri Lankan waters due to westerly winds, there were concerns that winds might push them further into the Sri Lankan territory. An official from the Fisheries department said the Indian Coast Guard has informed the Sri Lankan Navy about the situation. A Coast Guard vessel along with two mechanised boats fitted with transponders have departed from Thoothukudi on Sunday (June 29) to carry out the rescue operation. 'It will take at least seven hours for these boats to reach the spot,' the official mentioned. Thoothukudi Collector K. Elambahavath told The Hindu that a Coast Guard vessel from the nearest point had reached the stranded boats and rescued them from the Sri Lankan waters. The vessels are expected to reach Thoothukudi by Monday.

'Rhino goes to School' : Assam's wildlife NGO's innovative campaign to boost rhino conservation
Guwahati, June 29 (UNI) The rhino goes to School in Assam! Sounds weird, but yes the rhinos are being taken to the schools to make the school children, particularly those living near the one-horned rhinos bearing areas in Assam, aware about the rhinos and to ensure better conservation of the species in future. While the rhinos are literally not going to the schools, a wildlife conservation organization, Aaranyak, has been taking one of their most effective campaigns "Rhino Goes to School" to make the younger generations aware about the one-horned rhinos, the state animal of Assam. Supported by David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation, Aaranyak's main objective behind the program is to create awareness among students on Rhino conservation. "From this program students will get more information about Rhinos, so that they can contribute to conservation in the future. The program includes power point presentation, Poster Presentation, open interaction and open quiz sessions," said Arif Hussain, Programme Manager of Aaranyak. "We believe that we must teach the children about conservation of environment and wildlife at tender age only. We are running this programme for last 15 years and we are happy to announce over a lakh school children are trained under this programme," said Arif. He said that "Rhino Goes to School" programme does not only included awareness about the one horned rhinos. It also includes stories about real life experience on how we can contribute towards conservation, he said. He said that the goal of the programme is to create awareness about rhino conservation and build future stewards for the conservation of this iconic species which is also the State Animal of Assam. " Students were acquainted with basic knowledge on rhinos, their distribution and importance," said Arif who is the Manager, Rhino Research and Conservation Division of Aaranyak. Aaranyak is a prominent wildlife and biodiversity conservation organisation in UN framework convention on climate change have recently announced Aaranyak in partnership with the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) as winner of its UN Lighthouse Activity Award 2014 for the successful implementation of the community-based flood early warning system in the Lakhimpur and Dhemaji Districts of Assam.
