CBI probe into PCI chief reignites push for pharmacy commission bill

Time of India7 hours ago
Ahmedabad: With the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) now probing Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) president Montu Patel over alleged corruption in pharmacy college approvals, there is a renewed push for the passage of the long-pending National Pharmacy Commission Bill.
An expert panel, constituted by the ministry of health & family welfare to review the Pharmacy Act, 1948, flagged the issue repeatedly before the govt. The committee warned them of systemic weaknesses in the existing framework and alleged irregularities in the PCI's functioning — issues now under formal investigation by the CBI.
In its communication from Feb, addressed to the PMO, the panel flagged that the Pharmacy Act, 1948, was outdated, lacked enforcement clarity, and offered no academic representation in the PCI.
It cited repeated court observations on the council's inefficiencies and advocated for a complete overhaul on the lines of the National Medical Commission.

The draft bill was already finalised after public consultation but has yet to be tabled in Parliament. With Patel now accused of manipulating inspection norms, bypassing due process, and exerting undue control over the executive committee, experts say the delay in passing the bill has allowed cracks in the system to deepen.

Police close Praful Patel impersonation case against Mumbai hotelier

Mumbai: The nodal cyber police have closed the cheating, forgery and impersonation case against the Juhu hotelier who impersonated NCP Rajya Sabha member Praful Patel and sent messages to Qatar ruling family to seek their assistance in securing business opportunities. Ravi Kant reportedly used Patel's display picture (DP) on WhatsApp to make his demands. Patel had filed a complaint last year. Police submitted a 'C' summary report (when the case is neither true nor false and the case was filed due to mistake of facts), stating that that no criminal offence had occurred and whatever happened was due to misunderstanding, particularly because Kant was a long-time admirer and fan of Patel and put his picture on his WhatsApp profile. CBI Busts International Tech Support Scam Syndicate In Noida, 1 Arrested

Noida: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has busted a transnational cyber fraud syndicate that was operating a sophisticated fake tech support scam targeting citizens in the United Kingdom and Australia. The agency arrested a person in connection with the case. The action is part of the agency's ongoing Operation Chakra-V. The syndicate operated through a fully functional fake call centre under the name FirstIdea, located in the Noida Special Economic Zone. In a coordinated raid conducted on Monday, CBI sleuths searched three locations in Noida and caught fraudsters in the act - live scam calls were detected as the operation was synchronised with the time zones of targeted victims. The group posed as technical support agents of reputed multinational companies such as Microsoft, tricking unsuspecting foreign nationals into believing that their devices were infected or compromised. They would then extort money under the pretext of providing "tech support" for non-existent problems. Acting on credible intelligence, the CBI registered a case and launched the operation with support from the FBI (USA), the UK's National Crime Agency (NCA), and Microsoft Corporation. During the searches, investigators seized advanced calling infrastructure, malicious software scripts, and documents that revealed the large-scale nature of the scam. The syndicate had developed systems that ensured anonymity and enabled cross-border targeting on a significant scale. A key operative, identified as a partner in the FirstIdea operation, has been arrested and is being produced before the Special CBI Court today, July 8. The CBI has reaffirmed its commitment to fighting cybercrime and reiterated its resolve to collaborate with international law enforcement and tech giants to bring such criminals to justice. Through Operation Chakra-V and similar initiatives, the Bureau is actively working to dismantle cybercriminal networks operating across borders. The arrested person's name is Nishant Walia, who is a partner in Firstidea.
