Report: Saints to introduce new alternate uniforms, helmets just before training camp

USA Today15 hours ago
Saints fans may have to say goodbye to their 'Color Rush' jerseys or throwbacks
Here's something to look forward to. Sports Logos' Andrew Lind reports that the New Orleans Saints plan on rolling out a new alternate helmet and accompanying helmet on Tuesday, July 22, just before the team kicks off their 2025 training camp on the following Wednesday. Lind previously reported that the Saints were among several teams working on new alternate helmets.
But that's not all. This reports says that the Saints plan on replacing one of their two alternate uniforms while introducing the new look, swapping it out for either their old-school throwback uniforms or their popular white-and-gold "Color Rush" combo. Lind adds that "An old gold helmet makes sense" to better match the team's pants (which clash with the shade used in their throwbacks), so maybe that's a hint. Maybe it isn't.
Either way, change was needed. When the NFL changed its rules to allow teams to use two different helmet designs a few years back, the Saints' overworked black helmets were a bit of a dud (going 0-4 in the new lids didn't help). The consensus take was that they needed more time in the oven, or at least shouldn't have been paired with their white "Color Rush" uniforms. If this move rectifies that mistake, it could be a big win for NFL fashion advocates everywhere. But of course the largest concern is whether the Saints are winning games, not what they're wearing into them.
More changes are on the horizon. Starting this year, the AFC East and NFC West teams will unveil "Nike Rivalries" uniforms which will be introduced for every team in the league by 2028. Saints fans will have to wait a year or two (or three) to see what's coming, but at least they'll get an early look at a different jersey this summer.

Analytics site misses mark in identifying 49ers biggest position battle

The San Francisco 49ers for the first time in a long time have a handful of position battles set to play out in training camp. One of those is at left guard, which Pro Football and Sports Network identified as the top position battle for San Francisco. The presumed bout between Ben Bartch and Spencer Burford for the starting LG spot will undoubtedly be worth keeping a close eye on. Both players upside, but neither has done anything in the NFL to put a stranglehold on the spot leading up to camp. While the starting LG spot is a big one, our top fight for a starting job is on the other side of the ball. Will linebacker stands out as the biggest position battle for the 49ers as they sort out their new-look unit under new old defensive coordinator Robert Saleh. San Francisco lost Dre Greenlaw in free agency which opened the three-down starting spot alongside Fred Warner. Last season De'Vondre Campbell held down that job while Greenlaw recovered from an Achilles tear in the Super Bowl. Campbell quit playing for the 49ers at halftime of Week 15. Throughout the offseason it seemed as though Dee Winters had the inside track to that job. Then the 49ers selected LB Nick Martin No. 75 overall in the NFL draft and opened a bona fide battle for one of the most important jobs on their defense. While the offensive line may be overall more important for a football team than the linebacking corps, the 49ers' defense has consistently thrived because they've been able to find quality WLB play next to Warner. Having the All-Pro lined up next to another athletic LB with good coverage skills essentially takes away the middle of the field for opposing offenses. Funneling throws to the sideline creates longer routes, makes the quarterback hold the ball longer, and allows the pass rush to get home and generate impact plays. Last season the team struggled in part because Campbell's athleticism had left him in his Age 31 season along with his ability to play coverage or get to the edge in the run game. The Martin-Winters battle will be an important one that could have a long-term impact on San Francisco's defense if one can emerge as a close facsimile to Greenlaw. That improvement is a bigger deal for the 49ers this season and beyond than anything happening at left guard. More 49ers: 49ers finally prepare for loss of future Hall of Famer in 2026 mock draft

Ranking five Eagles' rookies by potential impact in 2025

With the Eagles' training camp report date just 20 days away, we're ranking the Birds' rookies by potential impact in 2025. The Philadelphia Eagles added 10 draft picks to their roster in this year's NFL draft, landing the versatile Jihaad Campbell near the end of Round 1 and Andrew Mukuba in Round 2. Eagles GM Howie Roseman added two dynamic SEC linebackers, an All-American pass rusher, three offensive linemen, and an accomplished quarterback from Philadelphia. We won't know the actual impact of this year's class until these players hit the field and have time to develop, but on paper, it does appear that Roseman has maintained and created another Super Bowl window. The most significant indicator of draft success is immediate impact. With the Eagles' training camp report date just 20 days away, we're ranking the Birds' rookies by potential impact in 2025. 1. DB Andrew Mukuba The 64th pick in the NFL draft, Mukuba is versatile enough to hit the ground running at the safety position in place of the departed C.J. Gardner-Johnson. Mukuba should showcase his skills by displaying elite versatility at all three levels, while presenting a more hybrid and athletic model. According to Pro Football Focus, Mukuba earned an excellent grade in coverage (89.7). He forced an incompletion on 26.1% of his targets and allowed a 12.1 passer rating last season in coverage. 2. OLB Jihaad Campbell The 31st pick in the draft will begin practicing with the team in August when he's cleared to return from shoulder surgery, and he will start off playing the inside linebacker position. Campbell has been lauded for his pass-rush prowess, but his ability at linebacker and his penchant for bringing the ball carrier down are the most exciting aspects of his game. Pro Football Focus said Campbell amassed a 5.9% missed tackle rate, totaling 30 coverage stops. 3. DT Ty Robinson A physical specimen with a high motor, Robinson will complement Jalen Carter, Jordan Davis, and Moro Ojomo on the interior. Robinson's 15 tackles for loss in 2024 were the most by a Nebraska player since Ndamukong Suh in 2009, and he ran the fastest 40-yard dash among defensive tackles (4.83 seconds) at the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine. 4. CB Mac McWilliams Mukuba and McWilliams give Philadelphia's defensive coordinator plenty of options with several Swiss army knives at his disposal. According to PFF, McWilliams allowed just 21 catches for 133 yards on 38 throws into his coverage radius last season. 5. LB Smael Mondon Jr. Mondon logged first-team reps during the off-season program, and Like Campbell, the former Georgia linebacker is an elite tackler with a 7.8% missed tackle rate at Georgia.

Big Ben reacts to Steelers QB Aaron Rodgers' retirement talk: ‘Last glimpse of greatness'

Aaron Rodgers sent the NFL world into a frenzy with his retirement comments — and Steelers legend Ben Roethlisberger has weighed in. On Wednesday's livestream of the Footbahlin with Ben Roethlisberger podcast, Rodgers' retirement comments were a hot topic of discussion — leading Big Ben to praise the farewell tour in 2025: Advertisement "If we're going to take [Rodgers] for his word on that — that this is it — then you're going to get to see one of the greatest of all time play one more season," Roethlisberger said. "I think every week is gonna be must-see TV in a sense. … Fans of football are going to be coming out, whether it's at home, on the road — because you want to get a glimpse of greatness one last time. I think that'll be cool." Pittsburgh is hopeful that Rodgers can channel this "greatness" one last time — potentially leading to the Steelers' first playoff win since the 2016 season.
