‘Riddle', ‘Cactus Lily' and 'Sindoor' – decoding India's military codenames against Pakistan

Mint08-05-2025
Operation Sindoor: India's strikes at terrorist camps in Pakistan, hitting 9 targets successfully in the exercise on Wednesday morning was called 'Operation Sindoor' – a codename which was perhaps coined by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
'Operation Sindoor' came two weeks after the Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 people, mostly tourists, were killed in Jammu and Kashmir's Baisaran hill station. India had blamed Pakistan for the attack.
Wednesday's operation was the deepest strikes inside Pakistan's territory since 1971, according to CNN, successfully targeting terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
The operation's codename is ostensibly a reference to only men being singled out based on their faith before being killed in Pahalgam. Sindoor is the Hindi word for vermillion, which married Hindu women often apply to their foreheads. 'Operation Sindoor' was perhaps India's revenge on behalf of the widows of Pahalgam terror attack.
Unlike 'Operation Sindoor' where the emphasis was on victims, India's earlier military operation againts Pakistan had codenames that kind of inspired confidence within the armed forces.
Here are some examples of codenames used by India for military operations before 'Operation Sindoor' :
'Operation Riddle' was the India's response to Pakistan's Operation Gibraltar and Grand Slam in 1965. Pakistan violated the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir. In response, on 6 September, 1965, India launched 'Operation Riddle' in Lahore and Kasur.
'Operation Ablaze' was exercise by the Indian Army along the western border in May-June 1965, following Pakistani attack in the Rann of Kutch. It took place between the operations in the Rann of Kutch (Operation Kabaddi, April 1965) and Operation Gibraltar by Pakistan. The operation did not involve direct combat, it, however, demonstrated India's readiness before the war broke out in August 1965.
'Operation Cactus Lily' is also known as The Meghna Heli Bridge. This was an air operation by India in December 1971 during the Bangladesh Liberation War. The operation was conducted by the Indian Army and Indian Air Force to cross the Meghna River, bypass a Pakistani stronghold at Ashuganj/Bhairab Bazar and reach Dhaka.
'Operation Trident' was launched by the Indian Navy on port city of Karachi in Pakistan during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. In this operation anti-ship missiles where used for the first time during combat in the region. The operation was conducted on the night of 4–5 December and inflicted heavy damage on Pakistani vessels and facilities.
The Indo-Pakistani war of 1971, also known as the third Indo-Pakistani war, occurred during the Bangladesh Liberation War in East Pakistan from 3 December 1971 until the Pakistani capitulation in Dhaka on 16 December 1971.
'Operation Meghdoot' refers to the Indian army's operation to take full control of the Siachen Glacier in Ladakh. The operation was executed on the morning of 13 April 1984. It marks the highest battlefield in the world. The operation ended with Indian forces gaining control of the Siachen Glacier.
'Operation Sindoor' was perhaps India's revenge on behalf of the widows of Pahalgam terror attack.
The Indian Army remains the first and only army in the world to have deployed tanks and other heavy ordnance at altitudes well over 5,000 meters.

Balochistan Liberation Front says ‘Op Baam' complete after 84 attacks on Pakistani forces

According to The Balochistan Post, the BLF claims that at least 50 personnel of the Pakistan Army and Frontier Corps were killed and over 51 others injured. The group further asserted that nine alleged intelligence agents were executed at a checkpoint in the Musakhel region. In a statement issued Friday evening, BLF spokesperson Major Gwahram Baloch said the attacks occurred between July 9 and July 11, targeting Pakistani military personnel, intelligence operatives, and key state infrastructure. Balochistan: The Balochistan Liberation Front (BLF) has claimed responsibility for a sweeping wave of armed assaults across Balochistan, declaring the 'successful completion' of Operation Baam, a large-scale military campaign involving 84 coordinated attacks over two days, The Balochistan Post reported. The BLF detailed its operations, saying it carried out over 30 direct assaults, including four ambushes, striking personnel and installations of the Pakistan Army, Military Intelligence (MI), Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), police, Levies, and Customs forces. It also reported that 25 vehicles, including gas tankers and mineral transport trucks, were destroyed or rendered unusable. The group further claimed responsibility for torching seven mobile towers, downing five surveillance drones, and damaging a government bus and a local bank, according to The Balochistan Post. As part of the offensive, the BLF said it established 22 temporary checkpoints across several strategic zones: Makuran, Rakhshan, Sarawan, Jhalawan, Koh-e-Sulaiman, Bela, and Kachhi, briefly asserting control and seizing weapons. In another statement, the BLF described Operation Baam as a 'strategic transformation' of its military doctrine aimed at 'crippling the colonial administrative structure' of what it called the 'Punjabi-occupied Pakistani state'. The statement, cited by The Balochistan Post, asserted that Pakistan could no longer maintain its grip on Balochistan 'through violence, propaganda, or the illusion of parliamentary democracy'. It denounced the state's exploitation of Balochistan's resources and marginalisation of its people through 'Punjabi chauvinism and fascism'. 'Balochistan will no longer be the provider of golden eggs to a parasitic state,' the BLF warned, adding that continued oppression would bring 'escalating repercussions'. The group hailed Operation Baam as a 'milestone in the national liberation movement', signalling what it described as a new phase of organised resistance. Brahmos was instrumental in Operation Sindoor, got several countries' attention: Rajnath Singh

LUCKNOW: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday said that the Brahmos missile proved instrumental in Operation Sindoor and since then, more than a dozen countries have expressed interest in it. Singh said this at an event in Lucknow where he unveiled a statue of former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Chandra Bhanu Gupta at the National PG College and released a postage stamp in tribute to him. "Just a few days ago, I inaugurated a Brahmos airspace integration and testing facility in Lucknow. You must have seen that in Operation Sindoor, Brahmos missile has done a miraculous job and not only this, after the miracle shown by Brahmos missile, about 14-15 countries of the world have demanded Brahmos missile from India," Singh said. "Brahmos missile will now be exported from Lucknow as well. I believe that this facility will strengthen our country's self-reliance in the defence sector, and at the same time, it will also create employment. My effort is that more industries should also come here so that, along with Lucknow, the state also develops rapidly," he said. The minister claimed that UP was attracting more and more industries on the back of strong law and order and infrastructural robustness. "Historical changes are taking place in infrastructure. Expressway, airport, metro, medical college, all these are presenting a new picture of development," he said. Singh, who is the Lok Sabha MP from Lucknow, also showered praise on Chandra Bhanu Gupta, who served as the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh for three terms. "Chandra Bhanu Gupta ji started as a simple worker in the freedom movement and made a place in the hearts of millions of people through his sacrifice, commitment and leadership. Chandra Bhanu Gupta's life tells us that power does not mean only position or authority, but responsibility, sacrifice and protecting the interests of the public. "His life also gives us the message that there may be differences in politics, but there should not be animosity," he said.
