‘Heroes' pull men from smoking wreckage of BMW that flipped in Piccadilly Circus
One of the occupants, aged 22, was taken to the major trauma hospital after the crash in the early hours of Sunday.
Before ambulances could arrive, a dozen passers-by ran to the wreckage of the car and worked together to pull out the two men.
They managed to pull out the injured driver and passenger, not knowing if the vehicle would catch fire or fall on them as they struggled to free them, witnesses said.
Dramatic footage shows the selfless 'heroes' lifting up a limp man wearing jeans and a hoodie from the chaotic crash.
A lamp post and a security bollard had been ripped out of the ground by the black BMW.
A club worker who saw the rescue told Metro: 'There was a group around the wreckage.
'There was smoke coming out. They were heroes to dive in like that. The car was badly beaten up. It could have caught fire or anything.'
Piccadilly Circus is one of London's busiest roundabouts – connecting multiple roads to the West End and attracting upwards of 100,000,000 visitors each year.
The Eros statue and the fountain itself weren't damaged.
One of the men was originally on the critical list but is now not in a life-threatening condition, police said.
A Metropolitan Police statement said: 'We were called at 5.28 am after a single vehicle collision.
'A black BMW had overturned, ending up next to the Eros fountain. Two men, both aged 22 and both occupants of the vehicle, were taken to the hospital.
'No pedestrians were injured and no other vehicles are believed to be involved.' More Trending
No arrests have been made.
Major roads near the crash – Regent Street, Piccadilly Street, Shaftesbury Avenue, and Coventry Street were closed as emergency services swooped in.
The fountain into which the car crashed is known as the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain, also called Eros.
It was unveiled in 1892, and its iconic silhouette is known as the logo of the Evening Standard newspaper.

The German was hoping for a productive run at Wimbledon but saw his hopes ended in the first round by Arthur Rinderknech. It was one of the biggest upsets in the first round of Wimbledon, with Rinderknech defying his world ranking of 72 to stun three-time Grand Slam finalist Zverez. Zverez showed admirable spirit to force a fifth-set decider but was unable to produce the goods in a gruelling contest that almost lasted five hours, ultimately losing 7-6 (7-3) 6-7 (8-10) 6-3 6-7 (5-7) 6-4. The 28-year-old started the year by reaching the Australian Open final but just six months on has been left feeling 'empty and alone'. Zverev was accused of domestic abuse by his former girlfriend Olya Sharypova in 2020 and by the mother of his child, Brenda Patea, in 2023. He has repeatedly denied both sets of allegations and a Berlin court case brought by Patea was discontinued last year. I keep kind of finding myself back in it in a way. I don't know. 'I feel, generally speaking, quite alone in life at the moment, which is a feeling that is not very nice. 'It's not a feeling on a tennis court, it's just a life feeling in general. As I said, I never felt this way before. I don't know. It's difficult to find joy outside the tennis court for me at the moment. 'It's not an excuse or anything. I think Arthur deserved to win today. It's nothing about that. I've been through a lot of difficulties in the media. I've been through a lot of difficulties in life generally. 'I've never felt this empty before. Just lacking joy, just lacking joy in everything that I do. It's not necessarily about tennis. Just lacking joy outside of tennis, as well. Despite struggling mentally, Zverev is still determined to win a Grand Slam, having come so close on three separate occasions. 'I want to win a major, yes. Attacker pulls out huge knife and lunges at young woman in London park

Snapchat video captured the moment the hooded perpetrator whipped out the blade in Gladstone Park, north London, on Monday. The weapon was inches from slashing the terrified victim, as she backed away while others fled. A man filming the attack can be heard screaming, 'She backed out a shank, are you mad?' meaning she brought out a knife. Police officers descended on the scene just after 10pm after the video went viral on social media, but they could not locate the alleged knife-wielder or weapon, the force told Metro. There were no reported injuries and arrests have been made. Metro revealed that almost half of all murders in the UK over the last two years have been due to stabbings or violent incidents with a blade. Figures show that out of the 898 recorded murders in the UK over the last three years, 443 of these murders were committed using a knife, stabbing, or a sharp instrument. Data gathered from Freedom of Information Requests (FOI) from 38 police forces across the UK between 2022-2024 highlighted the worrying rise. Labour says it will bring 3,000 police officers back on the streets alongside a five-step plan to 'tackle the issue 'take back our streets'. This includes the banning of ninja swords this summer. 'Beautiful' girl, 7, crushed to death by falling tree named
Her family have paid tribute (Picture: REX/ESSEX POLICE) A seven-year-old girl crushed to death by a falling tree has been named as Leonna Ruka. Leonna, from Dagenham, was enjoying the warm weather in Chalkwell Park in Southend-on-Sea on Sunday when a tree collapsed. Several children were pinned beneath it, including Leonna, as dozens of park-goers and family members rushed to raise the broken branches. Leonna was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, where she died. The youngster's family said in a statement today: 'It is with broken hearts and unimaginable pain that we share the devastating loss of our beloved daughter Leonna – our beautiful, bright, and loving little girl, taken from us far too soon.
