I tried on 12 Old Navy dresses, jumpsuits and more — they make me feel comfortable and chic as a 48-year-old mom, and they're all 50% off

Yahoo07-07-2025
There was a time in the early 2000s when everything I owned was from Old Navy. Flash forward to me at 48, and I still can't get enough of the dependable and always affordable brand.
Their current summer collection is particularly on-point — something I learned when I decided to pop into the store on my way back from an emergency evening milk run (how do we go through it so fast!?). I tried on over a dozen items, and I wanted every single one of them. From casual dresses to cute jumpsuits, these all make me feel comfortable and chic, and all work for my busy life as a mom of two. The best part? Everything is currently under $30 thanks to Old Navy's massive sale, where you can score 50 per cent off just about everything. Check out my summer style recommendations below.
$17 $35 at Old Navy
Whether you are looking for a comfy beach cover-up or a low-maintenance dress for running errands, this 100 per cent cotton T-shirt dress checks all the boxes. I tried this on in three colours, including classic black, and really liked the look and feel of them all. The slide slits also give it a little more of an edgy style while allowing you to move with (or chase) your kiddos.
$20 $40 at Old Navy
I don't always love dresses that fall above the knee, but this mini with its side pockets was just too cute not to try. I was immediately drawn to the bright colourway and appreciated the wide adjustable straps. The 100 per cent viscose rayon fabric is curve-hugging without being too tight, and the fit-and-flare shape is super flattering — no wonder shoppers are calling this the "perfect summer dress." One thing? My usual size XS fit fine, but I found it to be a bit looser than I would like in the bust.
$27 $55 at Old Navy
I absolutely loved this dress. The fit, length and comfort were all off the charts. I tried it on in three different colourways and loved them all. Available in regular, tall and petite sizes, this dress is a great option for a variety of body types. With more than 1,600 five-star reviews, I'm not the only one raving about this "versatile" and "flattering" frock.
$22 $45 at Old Navy
This 100 per cent cotton twill dress is so light and airy. The fabric feels great, and the sleeves can be worn on or off the shoulders depending on your mood and how much coverage you want. Again, I'm not the biggest fan of short hemlines, but I found the silhouette to be really flattering paired with longer sleeves. The hidden side pockets are, of course, an awesome bonus.
$27 $55 at Old Navy
I've always wanted to be someone who could pull off a jumpsuit but never found one I felt comfortable in — until now. This linen/rayon number fits my smaller frame perfectly. I love the hip pockets, four-button front and adjustable straps. I will say it took a little muscle to get the fitted waist above my hips, and I wish it had a zip for easy on and off, but, good golly, did it look and feel great on.
From $24 $50 at Old Navy
This dress is a perfect example of one that looks way better on than it does on the rack. The V-neck tie front is fun and sexy, and I love the look of the ruffled waist. The smocked bodice of this 100 per cent cotton twill dress also allows for a super comfortable fit. I never had a purple dress on my bingo card for summer, but this comfy one with pockets has totally won my heart.
$17 $35 at Old Navy
For me, it's all about bright colours this summer. The super soft rayon/spandex blend of fabric would fall nicely over my swimsuit or out and about for a casual day. The high neck provides great coverage, and with a cute pair of sandals or wedges, it's perfect for summer. It does appear to wrinkle easily, which can be a pain, so have a steamer handy when you're ready to wear.
$22 $45 at Old Navy
Me? In a romper? No way! I rarely wear shorts, but this one was too cute not to try. I love the cut-out in the middle, and the 100 per cent cotton fabric feels so great against my sensitive skin. The adjustable spaghetti straps allowed me to get the perfect fit on top. Consider me a convert!
From $12 $25 at Old Navy
I can see this "easy to wear" dress being a total go-to for me as a low-maintenance mom of two. I get a bit self-conscious about my mommy-middle, so I love that this dress is loose-fitting but still stylish and trendy.
$22 $45 at Old Navy
I've never owned anything gingham (seriously!) but this cheerful, sunny number is really tempting me. Just a note: I would recommend investing in some skin-toned underwear if you opt for this style, as the fabric is quite lightweight.
$25 $50 at Old Navy
This dress can take you from a day at the beach to a night out in a pinch. Humid days will be much more survivable while wearing this flowy frock. However, if you need a dress with more chest support, this might not be a fit for you.
$25 $50 at Old Navy
The cushioned footbed of these platform wedge sandals makes them a ridiculously comfortable pair of sandals. As you may have spotted above, I tried them on with all the dresses and loved how they looked, but more importantly, how they felt. The faux leather straps don't rub against the skin, and I love an adjustable buckle. I sent my sister a picture of them, and she immediately texted back, "Get me a pair too!"

David Letterman had something to say after the Stephen Colbert cancellation

Crown David Letterman the king of shade. Letterman posted a video and a quip this week, seemingly in response to news that CBS would be ending 'The Late Show with Stephen Colbert' in May 2026. Letterman shared a montage of the many times he had roasted his own netwrok over the years, when he was still working for CBS. Colbert succeeded Letterman as host of 'The Late Show' in 2014, following Letterman's 22-year run. 'You can't spell CBS without BS,' the caption on the video reads. The two men have been friends for years and have been guests on each other's shows. While CBS cited financial reasons for the cancellation, there have been questions about the timing of the announcement amid the pending sale of Paramount, the parent company of CBS, which requires approval from federal regulators and Colbert's previous criticism of President Donald Trump. Fellow comedians have rallied around Colbert since the news. Comedy Central's Jon Stewart, HBO's John Oliver, and NBC's Seth Meyers and Jimmy Fallon appeared in Colbert's audience on Monday. 'Some people see this show going away as a sign of something truly dire,' Colbert said Monday night. 'While I am a big fan of me, I don't necessarily agree with that statement,' he continued. 'Because we here at 'The Late Show' never saw our job as changing anything other than how you felt at the end of the day.'

James Gunn Says He "Hates" Those PEACEMAKER Cameos in BLACK ADAM and SHAZAM 2, Promises Clarity in Season 2 — GeekTyrant

James Gunn continues to draw a line between the old DCEU and his new DCU, but the situation has been anything but simple. The filmmaker admits that certain cameos and references from the past era have only made things more confusing, and he's not thrilled about it. In a recent interview with Den of Geek, Gunn promised that Peacemaker Season 2 will finally sort out the messy continuity fans have been scratching their heads over. Gunn explained: 'There are certain things from the old universe that we refer to in Peacemaker season 2, but until then, they're not canon. Almost everything from season 1 is canon, but season 2 will explain everything that is or is not canon.' That means the weird limbo Peacemaker currently exists in, caught between two cinematic universes, will finally be addressed. For now, though, Gunn has made it clear what's out: those cameos in Shazam! Fury of the Gods and Black Adam . 'They're not canon! I hate it!' Gunn said, adding that he previously had 'no idea' why characters like Harcourt and Economos were recruiting for the Justice Society in those films. It's a fair point. Right now, remnants of the DCEU keep bleeding into the reboot, and for fans hoping for a clean slate, the result is pure chaos. Still, Gunn is confident that Season 2 of Peacemaker will bring order to the madness. The upcoming episodes will explore John Cena's unhinged hero as he officially crosses into the DCU, and based on the latest trailer, things are going to get wild. Gunn confirmed that the new season will dive deep into the concept of 'pocket universes,' an idea first introduced in his upcoming Superman film. When asked about the pocket universes, Gunn replied: 'The whole [second] season of Peacemaker revolves around that. Yes, absolutely it is. You'll see in Peacemaker [season 2], too… It's just Lex's version is much jankier than the one in Peacemaker . The one in Peacemaker works better. What the whole season of Peacemaker revolves around is that.' Gunn wants fans to know this isn't a typical multiverse mashup like Spider-Man: No Way Home . He described his approach as something more intimate: 'I think of Peacemaker as more of a high-concept story about one other world. It's more akin to Philip Roth's [1996 novel] The Counterlife than it is to the third Spider-Man movie… I love that movie, but it isn't about that. 'It isn't Deadpool & Wolverine . It's really a very simple, simple story about [Chris Smith's] relationship to this one other world.' While Gunn is keeping big-picture DCU details under wraps, he recently teased that there's a central narrative thread connecting these projects, something nobody has guessed yet. 'It's not what anyone thinks. It's not what anyone would guess. But I think if people watch the next season of Peacemaker , they'll see where a lot of these things are going, and have a little bit more of a sense of maybe what can happen.' Peacemaker Season 2 hits HBO on August 21, and if Gunn is to be believed, this is where all the confusion finally gets sorted out.

‘Final Fantasy' Made Hasbro a Hell of a Lot of Gil

Hasbro's no stranger to giving credit where credit's due when a video game helps save its ass financially, having already made plenty of to-do about how the blockbuster success of Baldur's Gate 3 a few years ago provided a surge of interest in D&D. Now it's thanking a video game of a different sort: the Final Fantasy saga, as its recent highly anticipated crossover with Magic: The Gathering has helped make the most successful set of the card game made so far. According to Deadline, Hasbro CEO Chris Cox touted on an earnings call today that sales of the Final Fantasy set, released just over a month ago, helped account for a 23% surge in Magic sales in the last quarter, helping the toymaker offset a $1 billion write-down to account for ongoing tariff-induced uncertainty from retailers, leading to a flat adjusted operating profit for the quarter. 'There's more people playing Magic, and there are more people who have never played Magic who are now playing Magic, than ever before,' Cox noted. The Final Fantasy set has been a subject of controversy even with its massive success and praise for the ways Wizards of the Coast integrated references and mechanics from the legendary RPG series into the Magic format. The first of the 'Universes Beyond' crossover sets to be legal for play in Magic's standard format, before its release, Final Fantasy came to represent concerns from players that Magic was giving too much ground over to licensed crossovers instead of focusing on its original creative storytelling. The surge of interest in the set's reveal also led to a rush on pre-orders, making trying to even get your hands on cards at their suggested retail prices a challenge—especially the set's premium collector-focused booster packs, with aftermarket prices breaking over a thousand dollars at MagicCon Las Vegas for a box of cards meant to 'only' sell for $455. Now, even as player interest switches focus to the upcoming release of Edge of Eternities on August 1st, Final Fantasy packs are still tough to come by. All that controversy matters little to Hasbro's bottom line, so 'Universes Beyond' is going to be here to stay. After Edge of Eternities, the first entirely sci-fi/sci-fantasy-themed Magic set, this year will see the release of two more major crossover sets in the form of Marvel's Spider-Man in late September, and Avatar: The Last Airbender in November. And even though Edge returns to Magic's own storytelling, its mechanics seem ripe for being adapted for the arrival of some pretty hefty franchises among the stars—ones Hasbro at large is already well acquainted with. 'Coming up, we have Spider-Man, Star Wars, and Avengers: Doomsday,' Cox noted on the earnings call, referring more broadly to Hasbro's toy licenses rather than necessarily any specific plans for Magic (although we know there are indeed more Marvel sets on the way after Spider-Man). 'That alone is a pretty stacked lineup and pretty meaningful top-line growth across our Marvel portfolio.' So maybe don't be too surprised if the toymaker finds a way to oust Final Fantasy from its current throne as Magic's most popular set in the not-too-distant future. Want more io9 news?
