NBA store opens at the Mall of America
The National Basketball Association (NBA) has opened its newest NBA Store at the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota, in collaboration with long-time NBA partners Lids and Fanatics.
Spanning nearly 20,000 square feet, the store features a wide selection of official NBA and WNBA merchandise, including jerseys, apparel, headwear, collectibles, and sporting goods from brands such as Nike, Mitchell & Ness, New Era, Wilson, Pro Standard, and Fanatics.
A key highlight of the store is a dedicated space honoring the rich basketball culture of the Twin Cities, with exclusive Minnesota Timberwolves and Minnesota Lynx merchandise on display. Fans can also explore an 'Experience Zone' featuring interactive video games. Adding to the personalized shopping experience, the store offers on-site customization services, allowing fans to personalize jerseys and hats, a signature feature of many Lids retail locations.

'In partnership with Lids and Fanatics, the store will offer an immersive experience for our fans in the Midwest and visitors from around the globe, allowing them to connect with the game while exploring a wide range of NBA and WNBA merchandise.'

'We're proud to deepen our longstanding partnership with the NBA through the opening of the new NBA store at Mall of America,' said Bob Durda, president at Lids. 'This location brings the energy of the game to the heart of the Midwest, delivering a dynamic and interactive retail experience that reflects our commitment to basketball fans and elevates sports culture through innovative merchandising, personalization and Lids' signature customization.'

NBA Raptors drop Ujiri as president after 13 seasons
The 54-year-old English-born executive has British, Nigerian, Kenyan and Canadian citizenship. He was named the NBA's Executive of the Year in 2013 while with Denver, the only non-US winner of the award. "During his 13 seasons with the Raptors, Masai has helped transform the organization on the court and has been an inspirational leader off it," MLSE President and chief executive officer Keith Pelley said. "He brought an NBA championship to Toronto and urged us to believe in this city and ourselves. We are grateful for all he has done and wish him and his family the very best." The Raptors, however, went 30-52 this past season, missing the NBA playoffs for the third year in a row and fourth time in five seasons. They haven't won a playoff series since getting past Brooklyn in the 2020 opening round. "As we plan for the franchise's future, and its return to the NBA playoffs, a search for the successor as president of the Raptors, led by CAA Executive Search, will begin immediately." The move came a day after the NBA Draft and just ahead of next week's start of NBA free agency. The Raptors announced they would keep key front office personnel, including general manager Bobby Webster, who received a contract extension, the terms of which were not revealed. "We are confident that the Raptors organization, under the guidance of Bobby and his team, is in a great place," Pelley said. "They have a plan in place for next season and beyond as the team continues its rebuild, and we have confidence in their ability to execute and ultimately, to excel. "We feel the team is in a strong, stable place, and we believe the addition of a new president will continue to move the Raptors forward, towards our next NBA championship." Ujiri played his entire on-court career in Europe, including a stint with England's Derby Rams, before joining the Orlando Magic and Denver Nuggets as a scout. He was hired by the Raptors as global scouting director and in 2008 became Toronto's assistant general manager. He returned to Denver in 2010 as executive vice president and general manager, the first African general manager in major American sports. The Nuggets won a club-record 57 games in 2012-13, with Ujiri being named the league's top executive, and Ujiri signed with the Raptors as executive vice president and general manager in May 2013.

What is the Trump phone and does it promise too much?
US President Donald Trump's new gold smartphone has scrapped messaging that it is made in America, according to reports. Here is everything we know about the Trump phone. Earlier this month, the President launched Trump Mobile, a wireless carrier and the T1 Phone 8002, which the Trump Organisation advertised at first as being 'made in the USA". The website now says the $499 (€426) smartphone has an 'American-proud design' with 'American hands behind every device'. What do we know about the phone? The Verge also reported that the specifications of the phone have changed, from a 6.78-inch AMOLED screen to a smaller one of 6.25 inches. The phone now should have 256 gigabytes of storage, whereas the old advertising had it at 12 gigabytes of RAM. The phone will also have an in-screen fingerprint sensor and artificial intelligence face unlock, three rear cameras with up to 50 megapixels and one front camera. The phone is available for pre-order with a deposit of $100 (€85.37) and will be connected to the Trump Mobile network. The website said the phone was supposed to be available by September but the site now says it will be ready 'later this year". Trump's sons Eric and Don Jr. announced earlier this month that they would offer mobile phone plans for $47.45 (€40.51) a month under the mobile network, a reference to their father's status as the 45th and 47th president. The call centre, they said, will be in the US, too. A spokesperson for Trump told CNBC that the phones would still be made in the US and that any speculation otherwise is inaccurate. Euronews Next has also followed up with Trump's team but didn't receive an immediate reply. However, some experts have questioned if the phone is too good to be true, as the $499 (€426) phone is too cheap for the specs it offers and some parts of the phone are not made in the US. The smartphone is the product of the recently founded mobile phone network Trump Mobile, which is operated by the Trump Organization. The Trump family has flown the American flag before with Trump-branded products of suspicious origin, including its 'God Bless the USA' Bibles, which an Associated Press investigation last year showed were printed in China. In May, President Trump threatened smartphone supplier Apple and other US-based companies with a hefty 25 per cent tariff if they manufactured their phones anywhere outside the US. In response, Apple is reportedly expanding its iPhone supply chain through a $1.5 billion (€1.28 billion) investment for a component plant outside of Chennai, India.

Trail Blazers pick China's Yang in NBA draft first-round surprise
The 7ft 2in (2.18m) center, who made his Chinese Basketball Association debut in 2023 and was an All-Star in each of his first two seasons with the Qingdao Eagles, had been tipped as a second-round pick. That was even after his stock had risen after a promising performance at the NBA draft combine, where some of his passes had earned comparisons to the Denver Nuggets' Serbian star Nikola Jokic -- a three-time NBA Most Valuable Player. He had individual workouts with 11 teams, including the Trail Blazers who, after swapping the 11th and 16th draft selections with the Memphis Grizzlies, grabbed Yang on Wednesday. "The Blazers had scouts scouting me in China the last couple years," Yang said. "I also had a pre-workout with them last month. Everything went very well and I got along with all the front-office people. "But at the end of the day, this is sort of beyond my wildest imagination." Icon Yao Ming, who was the number one selection in 2002, and Yi Jianlian -- who was sixth overall in 2007 -- are the only other Chinese players chosen in the first round of the draft. It made for a sensational birthday for Yang, who turned 20 on Thursday. Not included among the likely first-round prospects and given a place in the near-stage waiting room, he clambered down from the stands dressed in a white suit to shake NBA commissioner Adam Silver's hand. Yang said that after the 15th selection had been announced he noticed more cameras on him. "I just thought something was off or thought something was about to happen. So that's when I found out," Yang said. But it wasn't a coincidence that he was in the stands to see the league's 30 teams make their first-round selections. Despite the pundits' predictions, he was confident he could be among them. "I was expecting to be selected at the end of the first round," he said. "So this is definitely a big surprise for me to be selected in the middle of the first round." © 2025 AFP
