French tourists rescued after going off Sepilok trail

Kota Kinabalu: Two French tourists were guided back safely after going off-trail in Sepilok, highlighting the swift response and strong safety commitment of Sabah's eco-tourism operators. Rainforest Discovery Centre (RDC) Manager Bernadette Joeman said Santarelli Antoine Pierre and Girodet Charlene were eventually brought back to RDC by rangers. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of trail awareness, she said. She said the trail system is designed to keep visitors safe and help them enjoy the experience without worry, as long as they stay on the designated paths. 'Our trails are wide, five to six feet, maintained and cleaned regularly by the Forestry Department. 'There are clear markers every few hundred metres and large maps showing 'you are here',' she said. Bernadette said it is important to keep our tourists safe, adding that international visitors are vital to sustain the centre's long-term operations. Bernadette said the incident coincided with a temporary disruption in RDC's landline, prompting the tourists to call emergency services. 'I received a call from the fire and rescue department asking if anyone had gone hiking to Sepilok Laut. 'I checked with our reception and confirmed that they had bought permits to hike the Mangrove Trail in the Kabili-Sepilok Forest at around 8am. 'During the hike, they went off-trail and became lost,' she said, adding that her team immediately coordinated with the fire and rescue department and the police after having pinpointed their location via a phone call. 5,500 take part in Friendship Run

Malaysia-China Friendship Run 2025, held early Sunday morning at Padang Merdeka to commemorate the 51st anniversary of diplomatic ties between Malaysia and China. Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew flagged off the 7km run on behalf of Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. The route stretched along scenic Likas Bay, turning at the Bay 21 roundabout and ending back at Padang Merdeka. Also present were Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, Deputy Minister of Plantation and Commodities Datuk Chan Foong Hin, Assistant Finance Minister Datuk Tan Lee Fatt, Chinese Consul General Zhu Xinglong and Malaysia-China Friendship Association Sabah President Dr Oh Ei Sun. Dr Oh said the event aimed to honour the enduring friendship and cooperation between the two nations. Christina praised the organisers and expressed hope that the run would become an attractive cultural activity for visitors. 'I hope tourists will be able to join future runs as a value-added experience. She expressed pride in joining the celebration, describing the event as a symbol of shared ideals between the two nations. Public transport users feel safer with seat belt ruling
The wearing of seat belts is now compulsory in express and tour buses. — Filepic THE enforcement of seat belt use for passengers and drivers on express and tour buses nationwide has received positive feedback. A French tourist, who wished to be known as Farida and was travelling around the country with her husband and three daughters, gave it a thumbs up. 'In our country, it is not mandatory to wear seat belts on city buses and as such, we forgot to fasten up when we arrived in Malaysia. 'It is always good to use the seat belt as it can save lives,' she told StarMetro while waiting for a bus at the Larkin Sentral bus terminal in Johor Baru. Human resource executive Yap See Wei, who commutes between Johor Baru and her workplace in Singapore, described it as a positive step. 'Wearing a seat belt can ensure passengers are not flung out in the event of an accident. 'I always fasten my seat belt, especially for long-distance travel.' She also suggested that stricter action be taken against repeat offenders. Polytechnic student S. Theivaanaath, who was travelling back to Seremban with his sister after a term break, also welcomed the enforcement. Yap (left), pictured with her sister says she feels safer now that the seat belt ruling has been enforced. 'I think it is for everyone's safety. When we wear seat belts, we can reduce the chances of serious injuries or death during an accident. 'Even the bus driver wore a seat belt and reminded us, too. 'So, I think the enforcement is working,' he said, adding that it should be continuous. Universiti Kuala Lumpur student Siti Noorsyahirah Mohammad Yusof said authorities should focus on the conduct of bus drivers. 'I take long-distance express buses weekly to return to my hometown in JB and I have seen drivers playing games, making loud video calls at night on their phones and even hurling insults at other motorists. 'Passengers can be fined for not wearing seat belts but what about the drivers? 'Shouldn't they face stricter consequences since they are the ones who drive recklessly and cause accidents?' She also shared her frightening experience during a trip returning from her campus in Kuala Lumpur to Johor Baru. 'We were all sleeping when suddenly, there was a strong, burning smell. 'A passenger at the back started shouting to alert the driver. 'At first, he ignored it. Only after a while did he stop to check on the vehicle's condition. 'Everyone had been worried that the bus would catch fire if the driver did not stop to inspect the source of the burning smell.' It was reported that the Road Transport Department (JPJ) had enforced the installation and use of seat belts for all express and tour buses starting July 1. This is in line with Motor Vehicles (Seat Belts and Child Restraint Systems) Regulations 1978 Amendment (2008). For the first offence of not wearing a seat belt, the fine is RM2,000 or a jail term of not more than six months.

LABUAN, July 26 (Bernama) -- The Borneo Flora Festival (BFF) has not only attracted residents of the Pearl of Borneo, but also visitors from outside the island who have come to celebrate the festival, which began today. A visitor from Brunei Darussalam, Siti Norlila Rahim, 38, did not want to miss the opportunity to see the various species of flowers on display at the International Sea Sports Complex. The mother of three said her family had arrived on the island by ferry from Brunei to Labuan yesterday to visit relatives living here. 'My mum told me there's a festival here (in Labuan), so I thought, why not come… and most importantly, there are also booths from Brunei involved in the festival,' she told Bernama. Jinus Yoson, 51, from Tambunan, meanwhile, arrived in Labuan two days ago and came to the BFF as he did not want to miss the chance to witness the flower festival being held for the first time. He said the arrangement and decorations at the BFF were very attractive, with colourful floral displays and various activities for visitors to take part in. 'If even the people of Labuan are coming, then those of us who don't live here surely won't miss the chance to come,' he said, adding that he was also visiting his child who worked on the island. Nur Hayanti Asri, 18, from Kuala Penyu, said she was not only thrilled and excited as it was her first time attending such a festival, but also because she wanted to capture memorable photos with the flowers displayed at the BFF. 'As a young person, the first thing I thought of when deciding to come to the BFF was to take pictures to use as backgrounds and post them on Instagram,' she said, adding that she learnt about the festival through social media promotions.
