Probe found person with big headload fell on others, led to stampede at New Delhi station: Govt

A big headload falling from one of the passengers triggered the New Delhi railway station stampede that killed 18 people, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw told Rajya Sabha on Friday (August 1, 2025). Also Read | Swelling crowd, continued sale of tickets led to stampede The Minister, in a written reply, shared the findings of the high-level committee constituted to examine the circumstances leading to the stampede this year on February 15. He said there was a gradual increase on passengers, many of whom were also carrying big headloads. Samajwadi Party MP Ramji Lal Suman asked the Railway Minister about the status of the report of the committee constituted to investigate the stampede and the corrective steps taken by the government. Also Read | Eyewitnesses recall tragedy, say many collided and fell on stairs and escalators Mr. Vaishnaw said the high-level inquiry committee has submitted its report for consideration. "As per findings of the report, an unfortunate incident on 15.02.25 happened on foot overbridge-3 stairs connecting platform 14/15 at New Delhi railway station. On the day of the incident, sufficient crowd management protocols were in place to handle the overall volume of passengers at the station," he said. "There was a gradual increase of passengers density on the FOB after 8.15 pm. Many of the passengers were carrying big headloads affecting smooth movement on the FOB. 'There was a big headload falling from one of the passengers and the pressure was passed on to the stairs of PF 14/15 stairs, resulting in the tripping of passengers on the stairs. This led to an incident at 8.48 pm on FOB-3, which was limited to the stairs of FOB. Consequently, passengers fell on each other." The Minister informed the House that in the incident, 18 people lost their lives and 15 others were injured. According to Mr. Vaishnaw, an ex-gratia amount of Rs 10 lakh to the next of kin of each deceased, an amount of Rs 2.5 lakh each to the grievously injured and Rs 1 lakh each to other injured has been paid. "Accordingly, a total amount of Rs 2.01 crore has been paid to 33 victims and their family members," Mr. Vaishnaw said. The Railway Minister said the government has taken several actions to handle the heavy rush of passengers at stations, including the creation of permanent holding areas and access control measures — allowing passengers with confirmed tickets — at 73 identified stations, widening foot overbridges, installing CCTV cameras, developing war rooms at big stations, among others.

Meghalaya govt orders probe into misappropriation of 4,000 MT coal

Shillong, Aug 2 (PTI) The Meghalaya government has ordered an investigation into the alleged misappropriation of over 4,000 metric tonnes (MT) of coal in the state, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said on Saturday. Tynsong, who also holds the Home portfolio, said that instructions have been issued to the district authorities and the police to conduct a thorough inquiry into the matter. 'We have asked deputy commissioners and superintendents of police to investigate if there has been any misappropriation or illegal diversion of coal," the deputy chief minister told PTI. The directive comes close on the heels of a revelation by a High Court-appointed committee that over 4,000 metric tonnes of coal, already declared as extracted and inventoried, have vanished from two designated storage sites. The committee, in its latest report to the Meghalaya High Court, said the disappearance raises serious questions about the state's mechanism for monitoring coal stock and preventing illegal transportation. Tynsong said the government will take action if any wrongdoing is established. 'If there is anything wrong, we will proceed according to the law. Even if it requires us to approach the Supreme Court, we will do so," he added. The state's probe will focus on tracing both diesel and coal inventories, including movement, documentation, and field verification. A comprehensive report will be prepared and shared with the court in due course, an official said. PTI JOP BDC view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Anil Ambani set to rise again, his debt free company now making good profits, earns Rs 600000000, company is....

Anil Ambani (File) Anil Ambani, once India's industrial titan, is currently going through a difficult time. The Enforcement Directorate has summoned Reliance Group Chairman Anil Ambani for questioning on August 5 in a money laundering case linked to an alleged bank loan fraud worth crores of rupees against his group companies, official sources were quoted as saying by news agency PTI on Friday. The federal probe agency has also notified a Look Out Circular (LOC) against the 66-year-old businessman to stop him from travelling abroad, the sources said, PTI reported. He has been asked to depose at the ED headquarters in Delhi on August 5 as the case has been registered here. Moreover, the ED is also looking at allegations of 'illegal' loan diversion of around Rs 3,000 crore, given by Yes Bank to the group companies of Ambani between 2017-2019. After the news broke, Reliance Power and Reliance Infrastructure shares reportedly fell significantly. Overall, the market was in a selling mode. Amidst a series of difficult reports, there is some good news for Anil Ambani. His companies are planning a comeback. According to the ZeeNews report, Anil Ambani's company Reliance Infrastructure (Reliance Infra Shares) has turned from losses to profits. In the first quarter of FY26, it reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 59.84 crore, compared to a loss of Rs 233.74 crore for the same quarter of the previous financial year. Changing their strategies, Anil Ambani's companies are recovering. Earlier on Monday, shares of Reliance Infrastructure jumped over 4 per cent, reaching Rs 358 on the BSE. This jump came after the company reported a significant turnaround in performance, recording a record profit for the first quarter of FY26. The company declared it is now completely debt-free and has no dues to banks or financial institutions. Anil Ambani has altered his business paradigm, now focusing more on debt reduction. He paid off all the debts of Reliance Infrastructure and left the company completely debt-free. As the company began to get out of the debt trap, investor confidence began to return. It began receiving new orders, not just in India, but from abroad as well. This is the primary reason the company is transitioning from loss to profit, and the shares of Reliance Infra started showing signs of revival.
