
B&M boss reveals huge change in stores and shoppers might be disappointed
The budget retailer has switched up its range to include products that are more expensive.

That's according to B&M's financial results for the year to March 2025.
The group revealed revenues declined by 3.1% over the year to March 29, compared like-for-like with the previous year.
The retail chain said cutting some of its prices had resulted in it making less money for products like homeware, toys, and electricals.
However, including the impact of the 36 net new stores opened over the year, revenues grew by 3.8% to £4.5 billion.
The group's pre-tax profit fell 13% to £431 million year-on-year, which it said was impacted by higher interest and finance costs.
B&M, which has 777 stores in the UK and 135 in France, as well as 343 Heron Foods and B&M Express shops, said it faced a 'challenging' retail environment.
Shoppers were affected by limited wage growth, especially for its lower-income customer base who faced a cut-off in Government 'cost-of-living' payments during the year, the company said.
It also flagged heightened cautiousness to spend among consumers, and 'very subdued' garden spending due to poor weather at the start of its financial year.
Furthermore, B&M said its own operations 'could have been better' and it was now addressing this.
For example, it reduced prices on some general merchandise products in UK shops which drove a higher volume of sales, but dragged on the total value of sales over the year.
B&M said it had adjusted its range to now include more products sold at a higher price, which had boosted both the volume and value of sales in recent months.
The group said the year ahead would bring new challenges for the sector, namely higher labour costs and inflation.
It is expecting to face a roughly £75 million hit from increased national insurance contributions, the higher minimum wage, and additional packaging taxes which came in from April.
'Work continues to reduce the impact of these pressures, through driving productivity improvements and sales volume growth,' B&M said.
'The underlying market trend towards discount retail continues, and the group's value proposition will continue to resonate with consumers navigating ongoing economic pressures.'

Shoppers have saved hundreds of pounds a year by using B&M's scanner app.
The scanner lets you see if an item's price is cheaper than advertised on the shop floor label.
Products that are typically discounted are seasonal items and old stock that B&M is trying to shift.
The app is free to download off the B&M Stores mobile app via Google Play or the Apple App Store.
According to one ex-B&M manager, you'll want to visit your local branch at 10am on a Wednesday too.

Download the B&M app for free on any smartphone with an App Store or Google Play.
Once you've installed it on your device, click on the option labelled "more" on the bottom, right-hand side of the app home page.
You'll then find an option that says "barcode scanner". Click on this and you'll open a camera screen.
Use the camera to hover over the barcode of the product you wish to check.
If the price comes up as lower, take it to the cash desk and it will automatically scan at the lower price.
You don't need to sign up to the B&M app to use the barcode scanner.

Expensive t-shirts are not more durable, first study into the garment finds
There is no correlation between the price and durability of t-shirts, a first major study into the popular garment has found. The most expensive t-shirt tested by the University of Leeds Institute of Textiles and Colour (LITAC) and environmental group Wrap was outperformed by one costing just a 30th of its price. The study concluded that price has 'very little' to do with the durability of most t-shirts sold in the UK, and that spending more money does not guarantee the item will be more hard-wearing. Researchers tested the durability of 47 t-shirts – 24 male and 23 female designs – from UK clothing brands, including luxury items. They washed the t-shirts using a standard mixed 30C wash cycle followed by a tumble dry 50 times. The t-shirts were graded for pilling – when small balls form on the surface of an item, and the main reason people dispose of the garments – as well as colour fading, shrinkage and general appearance. Of the top 10 best performing t-shirts, six cost less than £15, outperforming many more expensive tees including the most expensive costing £395. The research found more hard-wearing t-shirts tend to have a percentage of synthetic fibres in the composition such as polyester, polyamide, and elastane. Cotton t-shirts tended to have higher shrinkage than synthetic ones, which can be exacerbated with tumble drying. However, the research found four of the 10 top garments were made of 100% cotton. LITAC's Dr Eleanor Scott said: 'If circularity in fashion is to be truly effective, durability must come first. 'Durability underpins the reuse and resale market, as well as keeping our loved items in use longer. Crucially, these findings show that durability is not a luxury reserved for the few — it's achievable at any price point.' Mark Sumner, Wrap's programme lead on textiles, said: 'Most shoppers use price as an indicator of how hard-wearing clothes are – 'the more I spend, the more I'm bound to get out of my purchase'. 'But our study shows this is totally misleading. The most expensive t-shirt we tested cost £395 and ranked 28th out of 47, while a £4 t-shirt was placed 15th. 'The most durable t-shirt cost £28, but the one ranked second worst was £29. So, if you're judging on price alone – buyer beware.' PhD candidate at LITAC, Kate Baker, who presented the findings to the Product Lifetimes and the Environment Conference in Aalborg, Denmark, said: 'This research is another step forward in the road to developing a way of measuring how durable the clothes we wear are. 'Improved clothing durability is critical for the future of circularity and providing the opportunity for people to wear the clothes they love for longer.' The reports recommends that consumers wishing to ensure their t-shirts are as hard-wearing as possible choose heavier weight cotton options, while those with a blend of cotton and synthetic fibres also perform well.

'I'm 28-years-old and earning £100,000 a year - but I'm not rich'

He says he has to make changes to his lifestyle due to the cost-of-living crisis A man who earns £100,000 a year says he has been hit by the cost of living crisis despite his eye-watering salary. Strategy consultant Jack Kim, from East London, says he doesn't see his six-figure salary, once he has stumped up money for tax and bills. The 28-year-old, who owns a home with his partner, has shared a breakdown of his outgoings. Jack lives in a two-bedroom property which he purchased for £550,000. He says their monthly mortgage payment and council tax is tough. The 28-year-old denies that he is rich and says his income puts him firmly in the HENRY bracket. HENRYs are young people in the UK's top 10 per cent of earners who say they are left with little at the end of the month after bills, taxes and lifestyle inflation. Jack claims he's had to adjust his lifestyle due to the cost-of-living - ditching their weekly M&S shop for Sainsbury's, having to reduce luxury holidays in Asia for European mini breaks, and opting for Pure Gym instead of the more expensive Gymbox. "Even though I'm on a six-figure salary, I don't feel rich at all," he said. "Everyone knows living in London is extremely expensive. It comes to four main things - higher tax rate for people on six-figure salaries, higher living costs, lifestyle inflation and debt. As income rises, so does your lifestyle. I don't wear flashy, high-end clothes or own expensive watches, I opt for high street brands like Uniqlo. "We try and live below our means by limiting eating out to once a week at a good quality restaurant. Other than a drink at special occasions like weddings, I don't drink alcohol, which is very expensive. We feel the cost of living just like anyone else. I don't feel upper-middle class." After graduating from the London School of Economics with a bachelor's and master's degree in management in 2019 - which cost £99,000 in tuition fees - Jack began his career as a strategy consultant on a £21,000 salary. He quickly progressed to £45,000 and began saving for a £82,000 deposit to buy a own property with his partner. "We collectively needed roughly £82,000 for a deposit, and we did that in two years with some help from our parents," Jack said. "It meant we stopped eating out and primarily cooked at home. During that time, it was Covid which did help because it meant we weren't spending as much or travelling at all." In December 2021, Jack and his partner were able to get on the property ladder and purchased the two-bedroom property they live in now. Jack said: "Being on a combined income helped us for sure, but alongside our own drive and determination. "I can only imagine how hard it is for young people to get on the property ladder now. Especially if they're single and doing it alone. Affordability and the goalpost for a mortgage have changed - even in the last four years. It's not affordable to get a mortgage these days - unless you have generational wealth. "Growing up, my family and I were considered a lower-income family. From the ages of seven to eight, my mum, dad, brother and I lived in a studio flat in Seoul, South Korea. Since gaining my education and career in London, I'd say as a whole, my family are middle class. But we certainly don't feel it in the grand scheme of things. "I don't have an expensive watch or a car. No luxury yacht or Monaco, St Moritz holidays like my friends who are bankers. Consulting is an industry where you can see fast income growth. Even though my income has increased, our lifestyle hasn't changed that much."
