Police searching for man who allegedly threatened stranger with gun in North York
Toronto police are searching for a man who they say allegedly threatened a stranger with a gun in North York's Flemingdon Park area Thursday afternoon.
Officers say they were called to the St. Dennis Drive and Deauville Lane area at around 4:30 p.m. for reports of a person with a firearm.
It's alleged that the suspect approached the victim and began a conversation before revealing what appeared to be a firearm tucked in his waistband and threatening to shoot.

'The suspect then fled the area and was last seen travelling northbound on Deauville Lane on foot,' police wrote in Saturday's news release.
Officials also say that they believe the suspect and victim did not know each other.
The suspect is described as a man between 20 and 25 years old, approximately five-foot-eight with a medium build. Police say 'he was wearing a black facemask, black swaeter, blue/black pants and black shoes."
Police are urging the public not to approach the man if spotted, and are asking anyone with information to come forward or call 911 immediately if seen.

‘Disgusting act of hate': Victoria synagogue vandalized with antisemitic statements

The Victoria Police Department was called to the Congregation Emanu-el Synagogue on Saturday around 8 p.m. 'Officers documented the graffiti, and collected evidence, and then worked with City of Victoria to have it removed,' a spokesperson said in a statement. The Jewish Federation of Greater Vancouver was among the groups who shared an image of the statements scrawled on one of the columns flacking the building's front entrance on social media, along with a statement. 'We absolutely denounce this act of hate and stand in unwavering solidarity with the Victoria Jewish community. No one should ever feel unsafe in their place of worship,' a statement posted to X said. Public Safety Minister Nina Krieger, whose constituency is in Victoria, also decried the vandalism. 'Hate has no place in our province,' she wrote. 'Antisemitism has no place in British Columbia. Hate vandalism, speech and intimidation are not protected expressions — they are crimes and will be treated as such. The province of B.C. stands with our Jewish community, and with all people vulnerable to hate and violence.' Premier David Eby echoed the sentiment. 'Antisemitism has no place in our communities – not now, not ever,' he wrote. 'The Jewish community and police have our full support as they investigate this disgusting act of hate.' The investigation is ongoing, according to police, who said they have no further information to share about the incident. First built in 1863, the synagogue is a national historic site of Canada.

Private property crash leads to impaired charges in northern Ont.

On July 27 at about 12:15 a.m., Ontario Provincial Police responded to a collision between a vehicle and a camper trailer on the property. As a result of the incident and subsequent police investigation, the motorist was charged with two impaired driving offences – including operating a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration of more than 80. In addition to the charges, the motorist also received 90-day driver's licence suspension and the vehicle used to get him to the beach was impounded for seven days at the owner's expense. The accused is scheduled to appear in court in Haileybury on Aug. 26.

When police arrived, one man was found dead outside and the residence in flames. On Saturday, police announced that two more bodies had been found inside the home, which was destroyed by fire. Please try again A shelter-in-place advisory was posted on social media around 9:30 p.m. Friday. Police warned they were searching for a suspect in a fatal shooting and house fire. 'Officers are responding to a potentially armed person in distress,' according to the alert posted to social media. 'Please stay indoors in a secure location and/or avoid the area.' The advisory was lifted at 1:45 a.m. Saturday, though people were advised to stay alert and report anything suspicious to police. 'The individual previously considered armed and potentially dangerous has not been located, but is not believed to pose an immediate threat to public safety,' the OPP said. Mitchell Gray, 29, of Bracebridge, is wanted for murder. Many of the details of the shelter-in-place are part of the ongoing investigation, OPP Sgt. Joe Brisebois, of the OPP Central Region, said in an email to National Post. However, Brisebois said the suspect and the victim found when police first arrived at the scene were known to each other. 'The identity of the additional two deceased is pending the results of the post mortem, and that may take a number of weeks,' Brisebois said. Investigators do not believe that there is any threat to public safety – but ask if anyone has additional information or knows the whereabout of Mitchell Gray, to contact police or Crime Stoppers. According to Gray belongs to a family that has farmed in the tight-knit hamlet northwest of Bracebridge for generations. 'Everybody here is in shock,' one woman who took shelter in her basement told MuskokaTODAY's Mark Clairmont. 'They're a lovely family. It's pretty awful for them to deal with. Very sad.' Police searched sheds and barns and canvassed the area, according to the report. Police helicopters were seen over farms Friday night. Some people commented on social media that the shelter-in-place alert appeared to downplay potential risks. 'Three people dead. Suspect on the run,' read one post on the Facebook. 'No threat to the public?'
