Bangladesh's fastest train connects Dhaka and Chattogram, its top speed is…, no match for Vande Bharat, Shatabdi, Rajdhani Express, name is...
Traveling by train can indeed be an enjoyable experience. It even provides the opportunity to meet interesting people along the way. Whether someone enjoys the scenic views from the train window, reading a book, eating a favourite snack sold by hawkers, or chatting with fellow passengers, train journeys have a charm that other modes of travel can't match. According to a news report by India TV, the fastest train of Bangladesh, the Shonar Bangla Express (Train no. 787/788), operates on the existing rail network, offering inter-city service between Dhaka and Chattogram. This train service makes just one intermediate stop at Dhaka Airport.
The report further mentions that the Shonar Bangla Express departs from Dhaka railway station at 07:00 AM (Bangladesh Standard Time) and arrives in Chittagong at 12:15 PM. On the return journey, the train leaves Chittagong at 05:00 PM and reaches Dhaka at 10:05 PM. This train operates 6 days a week according to the schedule.
It is vital to note that the Shonar Bangla Express was launched as a nonstop inter-city train, providing excellent food and speedy service. Since its inception, the train has been operating from Dhaka Railway Station.
The Shonar Bangla Express holds top priority within the Bangladesh Railway network. Its fare is similar to that of the Suborno Express. Since 2021, food prices are no longer included in the tickets provided by Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation.
The speed limit of the Shonar Bangla Express is not clearly specified. However, based on the typical speed restrictions for express trains, it is likely that the operating speed of the Shonar Bangla Express is below 160 km/h (99 mph).

Indian Railways passenger praises women cops for checking on her on late-night train
A woman shared that her late-night train journey from Mumbai to Surat felt safer when two women police officers checked on her. In a now-viral post on LinkedIn, Purvi Jain shared how her recent late-night train ride left her thinking about how far Indian Railways - and the country - had come in ensuring women's safety.'Yesterday, while I was travelling alone on a latenight train from Mumbai to Surat, two women police officers entered my compartment at around 11p.m. and asked, 'Seat 38 - Purvi?' A bit confused, I told them I was Purvi,' she She said the officers didn't just confirm her identity, they paused to check if she was comfortable, offered a helpline number, and told her to call in case she ever felt unsafe. 'I'd never experienced anything like this before, even though I travel frequently,' she later learned that the cops had specifically come to check on her since she was listed as a solo woman passenger. An elderly couple seated nearby were just as surprised. 'They said their granddaughter often travels alone, and gestures like this make them feel reassured,' Jain short but thoughtful interaction left Jain thinking about the larger picture. 'That small moment made me reflect on how much India's railways, and the country overall, have improved,' she wrote. From high-speed trains like Vande Bharat to quicker online ticket bookings, Jain acknowledged the strides made in passenger convenience.'We're not perfect, and we're certainly not on par with developed nations yet. Indian Railways: How many passengers travelled by train in last six years?
Indian Railways passengers data: Indian Railways (IR) remains one of the most preferred modes of transportation in the country. Over the past decade, the Ministry of Railways has undertaken several initiatives to enhance connectivity including – the launch of modern trains like Vande Bharat and Amrit Bharat, doubling of railway lines, construction of new tracks, and the redevelopment of stations, among others. Earlier this week, Congress MP Imran Masood raised a question to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw regarding the number of passengers who have travelled by train since 2019. In response, Vaishnaw stated that train occupancy is not uniform throughout the year. He explained that passenger numbers fluctuate depending on lean and peak travel periods. 'On Indian Railways, the occupancy pattern of trains is not uniform throughout the year, and it varies over lean and peak periods. During peak rush periods, the occupancy of the trains, especially on popular routes, remains full whereas during lean periods and on less popular routes, there is sub optimal utilization,' Vaishnaw added. A total of 3349 crore passengers travelled in Indian Railways (IR) during last six years (i.e. 2019-20 to 2024-25) which included 418 crore reserved and 2,931 crore unreserved class passengers (2020-21 and 2021-22 were COVID years). Elaborating further, Vaishnaw said, 'To cater to the rush during Durga Pooja/Deepawali/Chhath, 7,990 trips of Special trains were operated during the period 1st October,2024 to 30th November, 2024, to serve approximately 1.8 crore passengers. With a view to facilitate the passengers during the recently concluded Maha Kumbh, IR operated more than 17,300 trains during the period 13th January, 2025 to 28th February, 2025, which served approximately 4.24 crore passengers.' The national transporter also increased the facilities for passengers demanding general class travel. A look at how many passengers travelled by general coaches in the last five financial years.
