‘Grow a Garden' is Roblox's calming new hit, surpassing nine billion visits

PETALING JAYA, June 22 — There's a new gaming sensation on the block, and it's rooted in something surprisingly serene: Grow a Garden on Roblox.
This laid-back farming simulation from Roblox has become a massive hit, attracting over 16 million players last weekend, according to The New York Times. Despite its simple premise, it has captivated millions with its oddly addictive nature.
So, what's the secret? At its core, Grow a Garden is a slow-paced game where players plant seeds, nurture their virtual land, and collect exotic pets.
It's a laid-back experience, offering a calming escape. The appeal? Well, as Reddit users put it, the game is 'simple', 'chill' and perfect for those looking to 'switch off'. This came in response to a post questioning the popularity of the game which the poster said was like watching paint dry.
Since its launch in March, the game has amassed an impressive 9 billion visits, with a huge chunk — around 35 per cent — of players under the age of 13, according to Roblox's own figures. And it's not just about farming; it's also a growing social experience, with a kind and welcoming community (according to some Reddit users).
The game is said to have sparked a secondary market as well, where in-game items like seeds and livestock are being bought and sold on platforms like Discord and eBay, with millions of dollars in turnover every week, according to Bloomberg.

#SHOWBIZ: US influencer Tanner Martin announces his own death before passing away at 30

NEW YORK: American influencer Tanner Martin recently passed away at the age of 30 after a prolonged battle with colon cancer. The news of his death was shared in a pre-recorded farewell video, posted on Wednesday by his wife, Shay Martin, on Instagram and TikTok, according to the New York Times. In the emotional video, the Utah-based Tanner announced his own passing, beginning with the poignant words: "Hey, it's me, Tanner. If you're watching this, I am dead." He explained that he recorded the message before his final moments so his wife wouldn't have to bear the burden of announcing his death while grieving. For several years, Tanner and Shay had garnered hundreds of thousands of followers by openly sharing his cancer journey, which included rounds of chemotherapy and radiation, multiple major surgeries, and even a visit to his future gravesite. His death came just weeks after the birth of his daughter, AmyLou, conceived after the couple chronicled their in vitro fertilisation journey. Reflecting on his life, Tanner said with a smile, "I had a heck of a life. Life was awesome. I really enjoyed it while I was here." In the video, Tanner urged his followers to pray for his family, specifically mentioning, "Please pray for Wright and our little baby girl." He also used the affectionate nickname "Jiaozi" for AmyLou, which means "dumpling" in Mandarin, a nickname born from their first ultrasound. In another pre-recorded video, Tanner revealed he did not have life insurance. As his final wish, he requested his followers to support his family by contributing to a GoFundMe campaign set up for his wife and daughter. "If you feel like helping out, it would mean the world to us," he said. Shay shared the farewell video with the caption, "May the force be with you from our angel force ghost. See the next video for his wish."

A new chapter awaits 56-year-old Fun Kee Bamboo Noodle when it moves to Taman Shamelin Perkasa in mid-July

KUALA LUMPUR, June 30 — Since 1969, Fun Kee Noodles has been feeding all who come to their shop with bamboo egg noodles or chuk sing mee. The family-run eatery that spans three generations keeps alive the tradition of making a special type of egg noodles, where the dough is kneaded using a bamboo pole that they bounce on repeatedly. Unlike machine kneaded dough, this traditional method creates springy, bouncier egg noodles. Their menu is a wide one from egg noodles with various toppings, braised noodles, Cantonese style fried noodles, sang har mee and fried rice. Originally operating from a shack, it eventually found a home in a shop house along Jalan Sungai Besi; they have seen the city change around them. What was once just a road in front of their shop is now a busy thoroughfare for those travelling into the city. Their signature bamboo egg noodles are paired with tender charred 'char siu' with pickled green chillies. — Picture by Lee Khang Yi A flyover built to cope with the traffic congestion meant limited access to the row of shops flanking both sides of the road. Fun Kee is the last eatery standing amidst light shops and other commercial companies. Behind them is the Chan Sow Lin area, tipped to be redeveloped with its proximity to the soon to be developed Bandar Malaysia further down the road. Even now, there are already multi-storey apartments being built all around them. Their devoted fan base has faced a perpetual problem of limited parking around the area, until there's even a sign at the restaurant advising people where to park. Christopher Lee, the third generation of the family, tells Malay Mail there were mixed reactions when they announced their upcoming relocation. Long-time customers, some who also span three generations, were sad that the old charm of the eatery with its retro tiled floor and marble tables will be lost forever. Using a bamboo pole to knead the dough creates a springier texture for their egg noodles (left) which can be enjoyed with dumplings (right) stuffed with pork, prawn and water chestnuts. — Pictures by Lee Khang Yi Some practical customers welcomed the idea of easy access to the new premises located in Taman Shamelin Perkasa. Currently no fixed date has been set for the relocation yet but Lee estimates mid-July as renovations are still being carried out. He has started to distribute new name cards with the Taman Shamelin Perkasa address for a smooth transition. A banner at the restaurant and a virtual announcement on their Google page, is helping to spread the word about the upcoming relocation. At the new place, the restaurant will be air conditioned and the opening hours will be limited to 7am to 3pm only. Presently they operate two sessions, morning and night, where parking is easier at dinner time. Fun Kee Bamboo Noodle will be leaving their present premises for Taman Shamelin Perkasa in mid-July. — Picture by Lee Khang Yi Even the days they operate will change as they will remain open for business on Sunday and take Monday off for their weekly break. Look out for the final announcement for their relocation date. The new address is No. 44 (Ground Floor) Lorong 6E/91, Taman Shamelin Perkasa. For those who want to experience that nostalgic charm of the present place, make a beeline there before they move, Fun Kee Bamboo Noodle, 174-5, Jalan Sungai Besi, Kuala Lumpur. Open: 9am to 3.30pm, 5.30pm to 8pm. Closed on Sunday. Tel:011-2162 8818. Facebook: @FunKee

New York jury to decide Sean ‘Diddy' Combs's future as sex trafficking case wraps

NEW YORK, June 30 — Jurors today will begin deliberating whether Sean 'Diddy' Combs parlayed his celebrity, wealth and business empire into a decades-long criminal ring that saw him force women into drug-fueled sexual performances with escorts. The dozen New Yorkers tasked with deciding the music mogul's future will began poring over thousands of phone, financial and other records along with the stories of 34 people who testified against him over seven painstaking, and at times excruciating, weeks. Combs, 55, faces upwards of life in prison if convicted on five federal charges that include racketeering, sex trafficking and transportation for purposes of prostitution. The producer and entrepreneuer, once one of the most powerful people in the music industry, denies the charges. On Friday his lawyer vied to skewer the credibility of his accusers—namely two women he dated for years—saying they were out for money, while rejecting any notion he led a criminal ring. But in their final argument, prosecutors tore into the defense, saying Combs's team had 'contorted the facts endlessly.' Prosecutor Maurene Comey told jurors that by the time Combs had committed his clearest-cut offenses, 'he was so far past the line he couldn't even see it.' 'In his mind he was untouchable,' she told the court. 'The defendant never thought that the women he abused would have the courage to speak out loud what he had done to them.' 'That ends in this courtroom,' she said. 'The defendant is not a god.' Defense attorney Marc Agnifilo scoffed at the picture painted by prosecutors of a violent, domineering man who fostered 'a climate of fear.' Combs is a 'self-made, successful Black entrepreneur' who had romantic relationships that were 'complicated' but consensual, Agnifilo said. Key to the prosecution's case were witnesses Casandra Ventura and a woman who testified under the pseudonym Jane, both of whom described abuse, threats and coercive sex in wrenching detail. In their closing arguments the defense dissected their accounts and at times even mocked them, insisting the women were adults making choices that were best for them. Speaking for the government on Friday, prosecutor Comey snapped back at that notion, saying the women were 'manipulated' into 'brazen' acts of sex trafficking. Ventura and Jane both said they experienced emotional manipulation and threats which made them feel obliged to meet Combs's sexual demands. Throughout the trial, jurors were shown voluminous phone records, including messages from both women that Agnifilo argued implied consent. But prosecutors said those messages do not paint the whole picture, and referenced testimony from a forensic psychologist who explained to jurors how victims become ensnared by abusers. Central to their case is the claim that Combs led a criminal enterprise of senior employees who 'existed to serve his needs' and enforced his power with offenses including forced labor, kidnapping, bribery, witness tampering and arson. But Agnifilo underscored that none of those individuals testified against Combs, nor were they named as co-conspirators. Many witnesses were given immunity orders so they could speak without fear of incriminating themselves. To convict Combs on racketeering, jurors must find that prosecutors showed beyond reasonable doubt that he agreed with people within his organization to commit at least two of the eight crimes forming the racketeering charge. On Monday, Judge Arun Subramanian will explain to them how apply the law to the evidence. Then, the eight men and four women will begin deliberating. They must reach a unanimous decision, reaching either a guilty or not guilty verdict on each count. — AFP
