Did Jessica Simpson just take a swipe at one of her famous exes? Star reveals what she ISN'T looking for in a man
When asked what she is looking for in her next partner, the 44-year-old singer and entrepreneur shared the criteria she's looking for in a man with host Jenna Bush Hager.
'My type of person is a one-of-a-kind,' she gushed. 'I don't have like, a look or anything like that. I just like for somebody to be individually who they are and exude confidence without the ego.'
The performer, who split from Eric Johnson after 10 years of marriage earlier this year, explained she's had trouble finding someone self-assured, but not cocky.
'I feel like it's out there, and I don't need somebody to be supportive of me all the time,' the mother-of-three added. 'I feel like the independence I have right now, if I can have that and give it to someone else, that would be cool.'
Her comment about wanting 'confidence without the ego' seemed to point to her rocky relationship with first husband Nick Lachey.
While writing about their split in her 2020 memoir, Open Book, she admitted: 'We really got crushed by the media and by ourselves.'
'I respect Nick very much. I was really young and my success hadn't really begun. He knew me as this young innocent 18-year-old that had never been introduced to the world in so many ways,' she explained. 'I went straight from my father to him. Nick's very smart. He was eight years older than me, but he was also young.'
As documented on their reality show, Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica, the former couple struggled with his resentment of her career.
'We were not one of those couples that screamed at each other, let whatever fly out of our mouths, and then make mad, passionate love,' she added. 'We would yell at each other, and then he would go out of town and not answer his phone.'
During her Today interview, Simpson also noted that she has no plans to walk down the aisle, but is 'very passionate' and has 'a lot to give.'
Simpson also emphasized that whoever she dates next has to be 'a very good kisser.'
'See, that's like the most intimate thing. Grab my face and pull me in! Can you tell I need it?' the I Wanna Love You Forever hitmaker mused.
Hager, 43, then assured Simpson that she would find her a match and one that could live up to her smooching standards.
'Even if it's just one night!' Simpson playfully shot back.
During her vulnerable appearance on NBC's Today show this week, the star also detailed the emotional fallout of her marriage ending.
'In the face of life completely changing, music saved my life,' Simpson shared.
She continued: 'Nashville saved my life. All the songwriters, the band, everybody, like, it was just one of those things, where I really connected to my soul.'
The actress made the remark after performing her track, Blame Me, off her latest album, Nashville Canyon, Pt. 1, to a lively crowd in New York City.
While Simpson has kept most of the details of her separation private, she confirmed back in January that she and Johnson had been living apart.
'Eric and I have been living separately navigating a painful situation in our marriage,' she said in a statement to Us Weekly. 'Our children come first, and we are focusing on what is best for them.'
The couple, who started dating in 2010 and tied the knot in 2014, share three children—Maxwell, 13, Ace, 12, and Birdie, 6.
Though she didn't mention Johnson by name on Today, Simpson didn't shy away from revealing how emotionally turbulent that chapter of her life has been.
'It was incredibly healing. I was in Nashville. It was a crazy time for me and my life. Literally flipped upside down,' she said.
'And I really just had to focus on my purpose. My purpose, my place in this world, and using my voice for the right reasons. And trying to just inspire myself to get back up. Have the courage to do it in the face of heartbreak.'
These days, Simpson says she's embracing a new chapter—and a new relationship status.
'I'm a very single lady,' she recently told DailyMail. 'I mean, I'm not getting on the apps yet. I would love for a friend to set me up. Are you kidding me?'
Despite the split, things between Simpson and Johnson remain amicable.
'They talk and see each other all the time,' a source told Us Weekly. 'They love each other and will always be supportive of one another.'
Still, the insider added, 'Right now there is no talk of getting back together.'

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce superfans name baby after power couple... and the mashup is going viral
When Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce first got together, fans came up with several combinations of their names, such as Tayvis, Traylor or Swelce, as a moniker for the couple. Now, a set of new parents has taken it one step further and revealed they've given their baby a name that salutes the couple. On Friday, Liberty Hospital at the University of Kansas revealed a sweet photo of a newborn on its Facebook page. The tyke was swaddled in a white blanket with a big yellow bow on her head, lying next to a red Kansas City Chiefs jersey with the name Kelce on it. A sign just above the infant's head featured a cartoon of Swift in cowboy boots and announced her name would be Kelce Taylor. ''We are so excited to announce the birth of the youngest Swiftie and newest member of The Kansas City Chiefs Red Kingdom,' the hospital wrote in the caption. 'Kelce Taylor is officially in her newborn era.' 'Send this to the podcast. I'm sure Travis would be honored,' suggested one commenter. One mom-to-be thought it was a great idea. 'We're having a girl and her surname will be Taylor, I wondering if I can convince my partner to name her Kelce lol,' she said. 'As the mother to a child named Patrick (born 02-02-2020 when we won the first Super Bowl) I support this SO much! And your kiddo will have SUCH a fun name story to tell. I know mine does!!!' A young woman named Kelsey Taylor called it the 'Best name around ❤️.' 'She's going to grow up and be into death metal and hate football lol,' joked another. 'Gosh I hope Travis and Taylor never break up,' wrote one cautious fan. That doesn't seem to be a big concern at the time. Saturday was the two year anniversary of Kelce sharing how he had failed to get a friendship bracelet to Swift, sparking their eventual romance Kelce, 35, shared several snaps of the adventures he and Swift, 35, have gotten up to so far this year. 'Had some adventures this offseason, kept it 100%.' he wrote next to the carousel that not only included the couple but their families including Swift's brother Austin, along with Kelce's mom Donna and brother Jason. Saturday was the second anniversary of the day the tight end revealed he had been unable to give Swift a friendship bracelet with his name and phone number on it at one of her concerts. 'Two years ago today, anyone got an update?' The New Heights podcast tweeted on X. while reposting the original video.

Marcia Hines: ‘The strangest thing I've done for love? Believe the lie'
You grew up with Donna Summer, as you were best friends with her little sister Linda. Is it true you two used to sneak into Donna's bedroom? It's true, I can't lie! She was older than us and any teenage girl knows that a teenager that's older than you is cooler than you. I don't think we ever read her diary or anything. But we wanted to see what she was wearing and try her clothes on. We'd try to hang them up tidy so she didn't know we had been in there. But she'd always know. She didn't like it. But that's what little sisters do! They annoy, you know? She was just so sophisticated and cool compared to us. Donna has passed, but she did get in touch with me and say how proud she was of my accomplishments and congratulations, which was a really nice thing. Is it true that you are distantly related to both Grace Jones and Colin Powell? Absolutely. They're my cousins. Grace is my second cousin and Colin would have been second or third. Grace was brought up in England and I was brought up in Boston, but I did meet up with her brother, Noel Jones, who has got the biggest black American church in LA. I actually went to church with him and one of the guys from the Rockmelons. He said, 'You look like Grace' – well actually, he said, in West Indian terms, he said, 'You favour Grace.' I didn't get to know Colin, but he was so way up in politics, it would have been very difficult to get to him. What's the best piece of advice you have ever received? Stay humble, be gracious, be grateful. And do unto others, as you have them do unto you. I was brought up very well – you learn those teachings as a kid, and it's important to put them into practice when you grow older. What are you secretly really good at? Mosaics! It's always been my hobby. I was taught that if you're artistic as a performer, you're usually artistic with your hands as well. You know that fantastic actor in Silence of the Lambs – Anthony Hopkins! He's an incredible artist. Tony Bennett too. And Joni Mitchell is a fine artist. It's messy, but I do like it. If someone's getting married, or if someone's going moving into a new home, I'll make something for them. It's a nice thing to give something of yourself that you've had to think about. I love to break dishes. What is the strangest thing you've done for love? Believe the lie. [laughs] What's been your most memorable interaction with a fan? There's so many of them. I adore my fans. If it wasn't for my fans, I wouldn't be able to live the dream that I'm living. So many people tell me really moving things – like someone was actually dying and they insisted they played my music as they died. That's big. I hear some incredible stories, because I do a meet and greet with my audience at the end of my shows. It's so touching, you know? One lady told me, 'That song encouraged me to leave my husband.' I was like, 'Well, I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing, but I'm so pleased I could help.' Do you have a nemesis? No. Well, hang on, hang on. Not that I know of, right? I hope not. You can't like everybody and everybody can't like you, but you can meet in the middle of all that madness. If you've got a nemesis, you probably made it. What's the oldest thing you own, and why do you still have it? My Bible, which I wrote in when I was about seven. I used to have a teddy bear that I had when I was a kid, and we put it into a teddy bear exhibition, and someone pinched it. But I still have my Bible. Sign up to Saved for Later Catch up on the fun stuff with Guardian Australia's culture and lifestyle rundown of pop culture, trends and tips after newsletter promotion What's the most chaotic thing that has ever happened to you while on stage? I fell! This was back in the 1970s – I did a kick, and my foot went out from under me. So I stood up and did it again to make it look like a dance step. Also, one of the scariest things that ever happened to me was when I was doing Jesus Christ Superstar. It was almost time to go on stage to sing I Don't Know How to Love Him. Someone spoke to me about something and it disturbed me greatly so when I walked on stage, I blanked. It is scary when you blank. The conductor, Patrick Flynn, was a genius – he saw that I had lost my way, and I don't know where he got a piece of paper and a Texta, but he wrote down a prompt and held it up in the orchestra pit for me. It's not an unusual occurrence to forget lyrics. You do what you can not to. But when it's happening, a millisecond feels like an hour. What's been your biggest fashion crime to date? Platform shoes. It's all relative, isn't it – everything old is new again. I'm seeing all these rehashed hippies wearing clothes that I used to wear. Platforms are back, as are flared trousers and baggy clothes. When I was growing up, midriff was everything –that is back too. Do you have any pets, what are their names and what are their nicknames? I have a dog by the name of Dalley. He's a cavoodle. I also have a cat called Sistah and I have just got a new puppy called Brotha. So I always have a sister and brother in the house! Which book, album or film do you always return to, and why? Out on a Limb by Shirley MacLaine. That really was an incredible thing to read and it's still a very good book. It talks about being a spiritual person, and some of the things that she went through and expressing herself as a spiritual person when people thought she was mad. She's anything but! I don't know where we live as performers – we live someplace else. We can live in amongst this, but we live someplace else and especially when you've got a gift such as she has. I just really like Shirley. Marcia Hines' Marcia Sings Summer tour with Casey Donovan is heading around Australia in October; see here for dates. Her song You (Teddy Cream Remix) is out now (Sony Music Australia)

Love Island is like Hunger Games…I'm 30 & still never had boyfriend – here's reason I blame show, says Olivia Hawkins
LOVE Island 'villain' Olivia Hawkins has compared her two stints on the show to The Hunger Games – and admits they led to her 'losing herself'. The 30-year-old says fellas never ask her out after she was first painted as a troublemaker in the villa in 2023 — then again during her return for this year's All Stars version. 6 6 6 In fact, the beauty, who has been an actress and a ring girl, claims she has never had a proper 'boyfriend'. In an exclusive chat with the Sun on Sunday, Olivia said the telly dating contest reminds her of the brutal fight for survival in dystopian movie series The Hunger Games because 'you never know when you're going to be dumped'. She explains: 'It can feel competitive with everyone the same age, feeling like you're at risk of being dumped. "I find dating hard because the majority of people I meet have watched Love Island, or know of my character on the show. It's hard not to be prejudged. 'I was the villain of the villa. They just saw me as a fiery character. Now I get told I'm quite intimidating. Men don't approach me because they think I won't be responsive. 'But that's a misconception. I'm the most approachable person ever. Men think I'll be hard work, and of course I like the finer things in life, but I provide that for myself.' Recalling how the programme affected her, Olivia adds: 'After Love Island, I got to a point where maybe I just lost myself a bit. "You've been painted as this one person, and then it's almost like a persona that you think, 'Oh, that's obviously not me, but do I have to keep that up?'.' The Brighton -born beauty, who starred in James Bond film No Time To Die with Daniel Craig and Ana de Armas, is now taking part in another TV show, Celebs Go Dating, in search of romance. During her first Love Island appearance, she coupled up with Will Young, Haris Namani and Kai Fagan, but was accused of being hypocritical and instigating toxic antics that made at least one of the lads cry. "She slated the boys who kissed new women behind their original partner's back, despite female friends also doing that. And when she took part in All Stars, she was branded a troublemaker again for seemingly trying to split Luca Bish and Grace Jackson. Despite dating a string of hunks — including EastEnders star Max Bowden, who plays Ben Mitchell, and fellow islander Jack Fowler — she feels her reputation has put men off committing to her and hopes that will soon change with Celebs Go Dating. She says: 'All I want is a partner to be there for me and be my soulmate, and to have a shoulder to lean on. I'd just love someone to take me for being me and get to know the person away from the screen. 'I felt like I really had to try and prove everyone wrong or show a different side to me. 'But really, I needed to just put myself first, and as long as I'm happy with myself, that's all that matters. 6 6 6 'My romantic life has been a real journey, a rollercoaster. I've never been in a relationship. Throughout my twenties, I really settled for the bare minimum and I didn't, I guess, realise my worth. 'I'm now finally at that place where I just don't want to settle for any less. I don't need to put up with a d**khead. 'I know what I bring to the table, so if someone else can't match that, then my time is so precious, as is theirs . . . I don't want to waste my time on anyone.' Olivia will put her romantic fate in the hands of matchmakers Paul C Brunson and Anna Williamson on Celebs Go Dating, which kicks off on E4 on August 11. She will be joined on the show by singletons Kerry Katona, Christine McGuinness, S Club 7's Jon Lee and The Chase star Mark 'The Beast' Labbett. They will be paired with non-celebrity strangers the TV experts believe could be perfect for them — and fans will see the couples then go on a string of dates. After the brutality of Love Island, Olivia says she is enjoying the process. She explains: 'On Celebs, you're never dumped unless you do something really bad! 'Sod the haters' 'That is the nicest part about it. I have full control and I'm not competing with anyone. 'But also, it's in my hands to make sure I'm making the right decision for myself. And I really do feel like I put myself first on this series.' Olivia insists she knows what she wants in a man, revealing. 'At this stage in my life, looks only go so far. 'I've met some absolutely gorgeous men and it just hasn't been there because the personality wasn't there to match. Sometimes, guys can be so attractive and that's all they rely on, and that makes them unattractive. 'I definitely wouldn't say looks are the be all and end all. I don't want to get to 90 and think, 'Oh, the only reason I went for him was because he was 6ft 5ins and so good-looking'. 'I want to be like, 'Haven't we had the best life? We've laughed so much'. 'I need banter. I can't have someone super-sensitive, because I am quite sarcastic. So someone that can give it back to me — that's playful — and I really wanted someone communicative and considerate.' Revealing her dating priorities, Olivia says: 'I need someone that's family orientated. I can't compromise on that.' The Celebs Go Dating stars got a baptism of fire on the new series with a singles night straight away, where they had to pick a match to take on a sun-kissed trip to Ibiza. And despite spending weeks on national TV wearing just a bikini, Olivia says she was more nervous walking into that party — or a 'mixer', as it is called on the show — than she was entering the villa. 'I've never been so nervous,' she admits. 'I know it's ridiculous, but because this was more focused on me and my journey, it's different.' Olivia hopes that by showing her vulnerability, fans will finally see a different side to her. And if they don't, she is past caring. She says with a laugh: 'Sod the haters. They're always going to be there. I don't worry about other people's opinions. I just live life and be happy.'
