Ford Breaks General Motors' Infamous Recall Record

Ford Breaks General Motors' Infamous Recall Record

Miami Herald20 hours ago
We already knew that Ford was having a dire year for recalls, but a new record by the Blue Oval is the final nail in the coffin for the brand's ongoing quality issues. According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Ford has issued 89 recalls in the first six months of 2025. That number surpasses the annual record for recalls by an individual manufacturer - and we're only in July. For dealers and customers alike, the need to attend to the various issues related to the 88 recalls has caused immense frustration.

Ford's 89 records so far in 2025 surpassed the 2014 record held by General Motors, when the latter issued 77 recalls. That year, hundreds of thousands of GM cars were affected by faulty ignition switches, including models from Chevrolet and Cadillac. However, GM is the parent company of multiple individual brands, so it figures that more recalls had to be issued, whereas Ford only has Lincoln under its umbrella.
According to Automotive News, Ford's 2025 recall count is more than the next five automakers combined. Ford says it's taking a proactive approach to recalls, whereby it's aggressively auditing previous fixes of issues in an attempt to pick up problems early. As Dodge recently discovered, some recalls can come back to haunt automakers years after quality issues should have been resolved.
Ford is willing to risk short-term reputational damage to improve quality in the longer term, although one wonders when customers will finally see the number of recalls decline, as Ford was the most recalled automaker in 2023, too.
One of the most recent of Ford's 89 recalls is an issue with a low-pressure fuel pump. This one affects over 850,000 models, including the Ford Bronco, Ford Expedition, and Ford F-250. Prior to this, Fords were recalled in 2025 for issues with rearview cameras, steering controls, braking systems, and seats, among others.
The rearview camera recall was even bigger, affecting 1.1 million vehicles. In this case, the rearview camera image could freeze or be delayed, so drivers would not be able to spot potential hazards.
At the end of 2022, Ford CEO Jim Farley said that fixing Ford's quality issues could take years, and midway through 2025, the company still has its hands full resolving new and old quality issues.

'1000-Lb Sisters' Tammy Slaton Sets Sights On Her Dream Car After Reaching Weight Loss Goal

's taste in cars is definitely exquisite! The reality star is ready to hop behind the wheel after smashing her weight goals and getting a much-needed skin removal surgery earlier in the year. Tammy Slaton became a superstar after she began documenting her weight transformation on the "1000-Lb Sisters" reality show in 2020. Five years later, the TV star is in a much better place and eager to try new things. Although Tammy is nowhere close to being an ideal driver, she already has an eye on her dream car. In a recent podcast, she expressed her wish to get a classic Ford Mustang GT, lovingly describing it as a vintage stang. In the same podcast, Tammy admitted to being afraid of semi-trucks, which, according to her, cannot see other drivers on the blind side. Back to her decision to own a Mustang, the reality star knows her onions. Not only is Mustang a high-performance and horsepower car, but it also has a very spacious interior, adding to its comfort. As reported by Screenrant, the TV personality will not let her fear of semis overpower her desire to have a good time behind the wheels of her dream car. She admitted that at some point, she would eventually take driving lessons. Tammy's fear of driving does not end with the semi trucks. She shared on the Creative Chaos podcast that she once had a scary experience where she and the driver fought back sleep while on the road. According to her, she had to take one for the team and stay awake to help the driver despite not having the slightest idea of how to turn a steering wheel. Afraid of suffering the same fate a second time, the reality star decided to lay her curiosity about driving any car to rest, until now. She experienced another close shave with an auto accident when she drove a golf cart with her brother, Chris Combs. Initially, Tammy was elated to drive the cart, which was moving at a high speed. Not long after, the situation became dire as she found herself heading for a tree to avoid a more disastrous collision. The situation left her scarred, as it took her a while to get over it and regain composure. The 38-year-old and her friend recorded a collective weight loss of over 2k pounds, a significant progress that still left her battling some challenges. The Blast reported that the content creator admitted that the excess skin that came with shedding all the weight introduced some physical discomfort. She declared late last year, before her weight loss surgery, that she sometimes got rashes under her stomach that were prone to infections, and that was a source of worry to her. Aside from this, Tammy has a lot to be thankful for. The star shared that she was able to cross her legs without breaking a sweat and put on her shoes conveniently while sitting on the toilet. Tammy showed up on social media oozing confidence with the results of her plastic surgery, which, according to fans, transformed her entire appearance. The Blast shared that Tammy hard-launched her new look in a selfie with her significant other, Andrea. She also played around with several filters, trying out what she would look like in previous years and centuries. It took a whole lot of convincing for Tammy to go in for the surgery. According to her, she was skeptical about the procedure as she did not know what the outcome might be and the pain she might experience along the way. She acknowledged the physical difference she would experience and ultimately concluded it was for the best. "I'm going to look halfway normal from [the] face down. It's scary but rewarding at the same time," she shared. After three years of dating, Tammy proudly flaunted her engagement ring to Andrea Dalton on the podcast hosted by Hunter Ezell. She noted that their relationship was pretty private, with most of their time spent indoors. Not only did she get a ring, but Tammy also got a necklace with the inscription "Andrea." The engagement announcement comes months after she revealed that she was dating a woman on the TLC show. Andrea revealed that they met on a dating app and immediately connected, taking each day slowly and eventually ending up together. On her choice to keep the relationship away from her family at the time, Tammy declared: "I think I want to approach this relationship differently than I have in the past. So I haven't told my family because my family's gonna have something to say about it." Andrea is Tammy's first relationship since her husband, Caleb Willingham, passed away in July 2023. Rooting for Tammy Slaton to tick off everything on her bucket list.

GM's Tennessee Plant to Start Churning Out Cheaper EV Batteries Soon

For current electric vehicle buyers, the news of the federal EV tax credits disappearing before the end of the year is probably spurring a second look at their budgets. Can they still swing that entry-level EV without a $7,500 tax break? For those looking at GM products, at least, there might be some good news on the horizon. Thanks to an investment into its Spring Hill, Tennessee battery plant, GM's Ultium battery packs might get a cheaper cell design soon—and since the battery is one of the most expensive components in an EV, any cost reduction there directly translates to savings on the car's MSRP. Same goes for the location of that battery plant. Cells built in the U.S. can mitigate today's tariff costs. GM's Tennessee plant will produce cheaper LFP battery cells by 2027, reducing EV costs as federal tax credits phase out. LFP cells are less costly due to abundant materials but have lower energy density. The move aims to offset tariffs and make entry-level EVs more affordable. This summary was generated by AI using content from this MotorTrend article Read Next Utilizing its joint venture with LG Energy Solution and its $2.3 billion investment, GM will expand the Ultium Spring Hill, Tennessee battery production plant in order to produce new lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cells. Commercial production volumes are expected to start in late 2027. Currently—no pun intended—Ultium cells built at the Warren, Ohio, and Spring Hill, Tennessee, plants utilize nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) aluminum chemistry. While powerful and well developed, NMC batteries come with inherent problems stemming from sourcing cobalt and the cost of nickel raw materials. Both issues create a battery cell that is quite expensive, even as overall production scale continues to drive costs down. Those who know battery chemistries know that there is a better alternative already in reality (unlike some solid-state battery chemistries that border on fantasy): LFP. While not a solid-state battery, LFP has many advantages, namely its lower material costs. Both iron and phosphate raw materials can dip into cents per pound while something like nickel is dollars per pound and cobalt can reach the tens of dollars per pound. The drawback of LFP is mainly its energy density and its performance. LFP batteries don't hold quite as much energy as an NMC battery and can be slower to both charge and discharge on demand. Density is easy to improve by just making a bigger battery cell, but that does mean it will weigh more. Despite those issues, the carrot of lower materials cost is just too good to pass up, especially for lower-priced EVs that tend to skip out on ultra-fast charging and mega range anyhow. But just how much cheaper could a GM vehicle using LFP batteries be? We asked GM for those details but it wasn't able to respond to our questions in time for publication. Once it gives us those details, we'll update this story with some ideas.

Why I'm Reconsidering Ford's Role in My Portfolio: Is There a Better Investment for Income and Growth?

Ford hasn't been delivering the income and growth I had hoped. I'm evaluating other investment options to replace Ford, like Healthpeak Properties. The healthcare REIT pays a high-yielding monthly dividend that should steadily increase. 10 stocks we like better than Ford Motor Company › I've owned shares of Ford (NYSE: F) on and off for several years. I bought my initial set by writing put options, lost those by writing call options, and acquired more through puts a few years ago. My strategy with Ford has been to generate income from writing options and collecting its lucrative dividend, while also benefiting from some stock price growth. Unfortunately, Ford's stock has gotten stuck in reverse over the past few years. As a result, call options don't pay very well. Meanwhile, Ford's dividend payment is at risk because of the potential impact of tariffs on its business. So I'm reconsidering Ford's role in my portfolio. Here's a look at one stock I'm considering as a potential replacement for the auto giant. Ford has been working to reinvigorate its iconic brand through its Ford+ growth plan. The company launched that strategy several years ago, which combines vehicles with software and services. It also focuses the company's efforts on three core areas: Ford Blue, for legacy gas-powered and hybrid vehicles; Ford Model e, for electric vehicles; and Ford Pro, for vehicles built for commercial customers. The company's strategy has yet to deliver for shareholders. Wholesale sales of vehicles from its Ford Blue and Ford Model e segments both declined last year. While revenue for Ford Blue was flat because of price increases, sales in the company's Ford Model e growth engine stalled, slumping 35%. As a result, that business unit continues to lose a lot of money. Ford initially expected that 2025 would be a year of significant progress for its Ford+ strategy. CFO Sherry House stated in the fourth-quarter earnings report that "the Ford+ plan is built on strong fundamentals, and we expect to build momentum and earnings power through 2025." However, the uncertain impact of tariffs on the auto industry caused the company to suspend its guidance in the first quarter. If its cash flow declines too much, the company might need to cut its dividend payment. With the dividend at risk and the share price in decline, Ford isn't delivering the income and growth I had hoped it would for my portfolio. That's why I'm considering selling and reallocating that money to a new position. One company I'm considering as a replacement for Ford is Healthpeak Properties (NYSE: DOC). The healthcare REIT owns a diversified portfolio of healthcare properties, including outpatient medical buildings, purpose-built lab facilities, and senior housing communities. Demand for space in its properties is strong and growing. Healthpeak Properties signs long-term leases with leading healthcare operators for its outpatient medical and lab facilities, which generate stable and growing cash flow. Meanwhile, its senior housing communities are benefiting from durable and growing demand as the population ages. Healthpeak expects the income from its existing properties to rise at a 3% to 4% annual rate from rental escalations in existing leases and signing new ones at higher rates as legacy leases expire. The company's stable and growing cash flow enables it to pay an attractive dividend that currently yields over 6.6%. The REIT recently switched to a monthly payment schedule, making it a great investment for generating passive income. The REIT's higher-yielding dividend is on a much more sustainable foundation than Ford's payout. Healthpeak has a low dividend payout ratio for a REIT, enabling it to retain additional cash to invest in new income-generating healthcare real estate. It also has a strong investment-grade balance sheet. The company currently estimates that it has between $500 million and $1 billion of dry powder to make accretive investments. Healthpeak's durable and growing income should enable it to steadily increase its dividend. It recently raised its payment by 2%. As a result, the company should deliver income and growth for investors. Ford is no longer meeting the needs of my portfolio. That's leading me to consider selling the auto company and reinvesting that cash into a company that can better deliver on my desire for growth and income, like Healthpeak Properties.
