Hyderabad Water Board to construct 16,000 recharge pits in 90-days to augment groundwater resources

The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply & Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) has decided to take up a 90-day special action drive to construct 16,000 recharge pits to augment groundwater storage in the city and up to ORR limits.
Managing Director K. Ashok Reddy on Friday informed that the plan is a direction from Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and is being supervised by Hyderabad district in-charge Minister Ponnam Prabhakar.
He along with executive director Mayank Mittal addressed voluntary organisations working in water conservation area and chalked out a collaborative plan.
In this scheme, in the first week, NGOs and organisations are tasked to identify suitable areas in the city for construction of recharge pits – injection wells, unused borewells, and rainwater harvesting pits for residential properties and apartment complexes.
Following identification, a public awareness campaign is conducted in residential colonies to explain about rainwater harvesting pits, injection wells, and methods to convert defunct borewell into injection borewells.
The campaign 'Intiko Inkudu Guntha' is a planned approach to augment groundwater resources and gradually reduce residents' dependence on water tankers for daily needs, particularly in the summer season, officials said.
Mr. Mittal informed that the 16,000 new recharge pits will be photographed, geo-tagged, uploaded in a special mobile application and can be monitored on a dashboard to check progress and maintenance from time to time.

A riot of colour, devotion and drumbeats: Bonalu draws lakhs to Ujjaini Mahankali temple

The centuries-old Bonalu festival reached a vibrant high at the Sri Ujjaini Mahankali temple in Secunderabad on Sunday, drawing lakhs of devotees from across Telangana for one of its most significant days of celebration. From the early hours of the morning, devotees began queuing up along the roads leading to the temple, with crowds stretching as far as Sarojini Devi Road. With bonams (earthen pots filled with rice cooked in milk and jaggery, accompanied by curd, sugar, and turmeric water) balanced on their heads, women offered prayers to the goddess. A major highlight of the day's festivities was the spirited performance by the Potharajus, bare-chested men daubed in turmeric and vermillion, dancing to the beat of traditional drums. Separate queues were created for women devotees and barricades installed along the route to manage the heavy footfall. Around 11:30 a.m., Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy arrived at the temple, offering pattu vastralu (silk robes) to the deity and performing special pujas. He received theertha prasadam and blessings from the temple priests and was welcomed with traditional Poornakumbham. Earlier in the day, Haryana Governor Bandaru Dattatreya and Union Minister for Coal and Mines Reddy, accompanied by their families, also paid their respects at the temple. Several other dignitaries, including MPs Anil Kumar Yadav and Etala Rajender, Medchal MLA Malla Reddy, Sanathnagar MLA T. Srinivas Yadav and Hyderabad District Collector Hari Chandana Dasari were present on the occasion. With lakhs of devotees expected, civic and temple authorities had undertaken elaborate arrangements. Five medical camps were established near the temple, each stocked with essential medicines and staffed by trained medical personnel. Drinking water points were set up along all major approach routes, and sanitation workers were deployed to ensure cleanliness throughout the area. 'We had offered prayers last year for my son's admission into a master's programme in the US. Now that our prayers have been answered, we have come here to offer gratitude,' said Sangeeta Yadav, a resident of Tarnaka. However, the enthusiasm of many devotees was briefly dampened due to restricted temple access caused by heavy VIP movement. At certain checkpoints, minor scuffles broke out as police personnel attempted to control the crowd, preventing some people from proceeding. Public announcements were made over loudspeakers urging VIP vehicles not to park in areas designated for pilgrims and to vacate congested spots promptly.

"Cryptic in many ways": Expert Mark D Martin on Air India crash preliminary report

New Delhi [India], July 12 (ANI): Mark D Martin, Founder and CEO of an aviation safety and consulting firm, on Saturday said that the preliminary report by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) on the Air India flight 171 crash was 'cryptic' in many ways. He argued that the Ram Air Turbine (RAT) in the aircraft was only deployed in the event of engine failure. 'It is the initial report, and it is quite cryptic in many ways. It says a lot of points that don't add up. If there were an engine failure, that is only when the RAT deploys. When the RAT deploys, there is only one course to restart the engine,' Martin told ANI. He said that incidents of fuel switches tripping to the 'cutoff' position have been reported in the past. However, the Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MROs) don't take seriously the circular issued by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), but only the Airworthiness Directive (AD) and Service Bulletin (SB). 'It has been reported in the past that the fuel switches have been tripped and gone back to the cutoff position several times. There is also an FAA AIB, a circular that has been announced. The sad part is that most MROs and maintenance companies in the world don't take AIBs seriously. They take the seriousness to an AD or an SB. It could have been one of the reasons for this incident,' Martin said. 'We are still in the initial stage of investigation and still have 90 days for the full investigation report to come out,' he added. On Friday, India's AAIB released the preliminary report into the tragic crash of Air India flight 171, a Boeing 787-8 aircraft, which crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on June 12. The AI-171 flight, which was bound for London's Gatwick airport, crashed soon after takeoff from Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel airport. 260 people lost their lives in the accident, which included 229 passengers, 12 crew members and 19 people on the ground. The report outlines a harrowing sequence of events that unfolded within 90 seconds of takeoff, as both engines of the aircraft shut down unexpectedly during the initial climb, leading to a catastrophic loss of thrust and rapid descent.
