Tanjung Aru PGRS confident of winning three seats

Kota Kinabalu: Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (PGRS) will ensure Tanjung Aru, Tanjung Keramat and Petagas are won by Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) in the coming 17th state election (PRN17). PGRS Tanjung Aru Division Chief Datuk Awang Ahmad Sah Sahari said this confidence is based on the current situation of strong support for local parties. According to him, the situation also reflects the instability within Sabah Umno, particularly the Putatan Division, which had previously been confident in its ability to reclaim all three seats in the coming 17th state election (PRN17). 'This sentiment is also a clear message of the Sabah people's rejection of external parties, particularly Umno, while expressing their support for GRS as a coalition of local parties. 'This situation is evident from the survey we conducted, particularly in Petagas, Tanjung Aru and Tanjung Keramat, which showed that the majority of the people reject national parties and instead support GRS.' 'Support from the youth, particularly new and undecided voters, largely favours GRS and local leadership to continue leading Sabah after the 17th state election (PRN17).' 'For the people, only local parties like GRS truly understand the heartbeat of Sabah's citizens,' he said when met at the Tanjung Aru Open Fut8 Football Championship organised by the PGRS Tanjung Aru Division here on July 20. He was commenting on remarks by Umno Putatan Division Chief, Jeffrey Nor Mohamad, who had earlier expressed confidence in capturing all three seats in PRN17. He said that such confidence was understandable, as the three seats previously belonged to Umno, particularly Petagas, which was once a stronghold of Barisan Nasional (BN). Awang, who is also Petagas Assemblyman, said the focus on safeguarding the interests and welfare of the people through the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) agenda had also contributed to this public support. He said under the leadership of the Chief Minister and GRS Chairman, Datuk Seri Hajiji Haji Noor, various assistance programmes had been provided in education, social welfare and development. 'Under the SMJ agenda, the GRS government has provided substantial assistance and incentives to the people. 'In education alone, there are numerous free initiatives for Sabah's children that have never been implemented by previous governments, including the SMJ housing aid, Syukur programme and many others.' He recalled a meeting in Kuala Lumpur with Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun and Datuk Seri Jeffrey Kitingan where a senior federal leader dismissed the idea of a united Sabah and Sarawak voice. According to Hajiji, the leader's comment, declaring himself as 'the Master,' signalled a clear disregard for the Borneo Bloc's aspirations and Sabah's role in shaping its future. Speaking during the Gagasan Rakyat AGM on Sunday, Hajiji, who is also Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) Chairman and Gagasan Rakyat President, said the incident led to deep reflection and eventually convinced him that change was needed for the sake of Sabah. He said the Unity Government under Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had taken Sabah's longstanding concerns seriously, particularly those related to the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63). Hajiji stressed that GRS backs the current government because it respects Sabah's dignity and has begun to deliver on long-overdue commitments such as the devolution of powers. Federal leader's insult pushed GRS into unity govt, says Hajiji

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : A federal leader's disdain for the proposed 'Borneo Bloc' political cooperation led Gabungan Rakyat Sabah into supporting Anwar Ibrahim's formation of the unity government after the 2022 general election, GRS chairman Hajiji Noor said today. Speaking at the annual convention of Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah, he said a former federal leader, whom he did not name, had dismissed the idea of Bornean cooperation. 'I was with Masidi Manjun and Jeffrey Kitingan in a meeting with a big leader over there (in Peninsular Malaysia) at the time. The person said they were the masters. He did not like the Borneo Bloc. He did not want us to share our experiences and stories with our neighbouring state of Sarawak,' he said. 'I was shocked by his words. I thought about them for a long time. What did they mean? What was his intent? As I thought about it, I lost heart (tawar hati) in these people,' he said in a video of his speech published on Facebook by Sabah Media. Hajiji said it was after much thought that he finally decided that GRS would support the unity government being formed by Anwar. Since then, he said Anwar's government 'has listened to our voices, and we have been treated well', and reiterated that GRS remained in support of the prime minister. Hajiji said many of Sabah's demands under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 were approved by Anwar, as opposed to previous leaders who found difficulty in devolving power to the state. 'So what are we hoping for? If the unity government is good for our state, why shouldn't we support it?' he said. In March, deputy prime minister Fadillah Yusof said the unity government had successfully resolved nine key claims related to MA63, including power to regulate gas supply in Sabah, the administration of the judiciary in Sabah and Sarawak, and guidelines on land reserved for federal purposes in the two states.
