Pradhan urges citizens to plant a tree in the name of their Mothers
In a video message on Wednesday for the launch of the 'Ek Peed Maa Ke Naam 2.0' campaign, Pradhan said, 'This year, the 'One Tree in the Name of Mother 2.0' initiative is being launched to expand this large-scale tree plantation drive.'
In this second phase of the campaign, 10 crore trees will be planted between World Environment Day on June 5 and September 30, Pradhan announced.
The Union Minister emphasized that the main objective of this campaign is to protect the environment through tree plantation and to create awareness among the general public about the importance of planting trees.
Thanks to the dedicated efforts of the people, 'One Tree in the Name of Maa' has become a significant campaign. Pradhan noted that over 5.5 crore trees have already been planted across India under this initiative. 'This is not just about planting trees; it is a symbol of our love and connection with Mother Earth,' he said.
Highlighting the contributions from various states, Pradhan mentioned the seed balls prepared by children and women in Chhattisgarh, the tree plantation initiatives in Tripura, and the planting of 1.5 crore saplings in Rajasthan, which have given this campaign a new identity.
He acknowledged the collective efforts of people from across the country, including Odisha, and described how this national campaign has transformed into a mass movement.
Pradhan further emphasized that this campaign is not merely about numbers but is a manifestation of our love and responsibility towards nature.
Citing the United Nations Environment Programme's guidance for sustainable development, Pradhan said that the solution to the climate crisis lies not only in new methods but also in adopting more sustainable lifestyles.
To advance this idea, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched 'Mission Life', Pradhan noted. He expressed joy and pride in seeing students, teachers, and parents emerging as responsible and sensitive champions of this cause.
As evidence of this, he shared that more than 29 lakh students have created QR codes for over 5 lakh trees, making India's vast environmental knowledge digital and accessible.
Pradhan urged everyone to plant a tree in the name of their mother and to protect and nurture it so that it grows large and shares its story with others.
'Every sapling we plant carries the message that we care for nature and are committed to its protection,' he added.

In April 2025, when TOI inquired about the matter, a senior govt official responded, 'Questions should be asked of the previous govt — what happened to all the machines they claimed to have procured for drain cleaning? Where are the machines they posed with for photographs? Soon, manual scavenging and outdated practices will be things of the past.' Measures will be taken to ensure cleanliness for the Simhastha Kumbh Mela at Nashik: Minister
West Nashik, Aug 2 (UNI) State Environment Minister Pankaja Munde today said that preparations will begin for the Simhastha Kumbh Mela to be held at Nashik-Trimbakeshwar, and measures will be taken for ensuring cleanliness for the lakhs expected to converge there. Earlier, the Minister had a spiritual darshan of Lord Trimbakeshwar and performed pooja of Trimbakraja on the occasion of Shravan month. Trimbakeshwar is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas in the country. Interacting with the media, she said, 'In the coming time, a Simhastha Kumbh will be held at Nashik-Trimbakeshwar. A lot of people will come here during the Kumbh Mela. Therefore, sustainable measures should be taken for cleanliness. The water where the sadhus and mahants will take a dip should be clean. In 2014, when I was a minister, the Kumbh Mela was also held. Now I have become a minister again and am holding the Kumbh Mela again,' she said. 750-acre forest to breathe life into Gurgaon air
Gurgaon: In a move to combat urban environmental challenges, the city is set to host one of NCR's largest urban forest projects. The 750-acre 'Matri Van' along Gurgaon-Faridabad Road will serve as a green buffer, combining ecological conservation with public recreation spaces. The project, launched under the govt's 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' initiative, will span five villages — Chakkarpur, Haiderpur Viran, Wazirabad, Ghata, and Nathupur. It will extend from Khushboo Chowk to Ghat Chowk, connecting with the existing Aravali Biodiversity Park and Nagar Van on the Chakkarpur hill belt. Union environment minister Bhupender Yadav and the minister for housing and urban affairs Manohar Lal Khattar inaugurated the project in Sector 54 on Saturday. The forest will be developed through partnerships between CSR entities, RWAs, NGOs, multinationals, and govt bodies. While plantation of saplings will start within a week, it will continue for the next five years. The result, according to officials, will be visible in a week. "We're not just planting saplings. We're dedicating an entire forest to mothers," said Yadav, adding that invasive Prosopis juliflora shrubs would be removed to revive degraded forest patches. The project's design will incorporate sustainable features like water conservation through recycling and misting systems. Public amenities will include walking tracks, yoga zones, and forest interpretation signage, with 10 thatched huts planned as interim rest points. An Aravalli Arboretum — a botanical garden-like zone focused on showcasing native flora — will serve as an educational zone, featuring specialised corners for research and learning. "Cities like Gurgaon are choking on concrete. Urban forests such as 'Matri Van' don't just improve air quality and water retention — they also provide people with access to nature," said Anand Mohan Sharan, additional chief secretary of environment, Haryana. During the inauguration, minister Khattar highlighted that urban forests helped cool city temperatures, reduce air pollutants, support groundwater recharge, and served as carbon sinks. "India has committed to creating an additional carbon sink of 2.5–3 billion tonnes of CO₂, equivalent by 2030 through afforestation. Projects like Matri Van are expected to play a significant role in achieving that target," he added. The project's funding combines multiple sources, including Rs 7.5 crore from development and CSR partners, Rs 2.5 crore from govt agencies, and additional allocations from various schemes, totalling Rs 14.7 crore. An extra Rs 10 crore could be sought from central govt schemes, officials suggested. "The plantation drive will be phased. The company assigned the project will have to maintain it for three years," said Subhash Yadav, the chief conservator of forests in South Haryana. Once complete, 'Matri Van' will be one of the largest consolidated green zones of Delhi-NCR, designed not only for ecological restoration but also as a public space for learning, leisure, and climate resilience.
