Scott Barrett retained as All Blacks captain for France series despite calls for Ardie Savea

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — All Blacks coach Scott Robertson has retained Scott Barrett as captain for New Zealand's three-test series against France next month, ignoring calls to promote star backrower Ardie Savea.
Barrett's reappointment was certain when it was revealed that Robertson's 35-man squad would be announced Monday at the Coastal Rugby Club in the tiny North Island town of Rahotu to which all three Barrett brothers belong.

Beauden and Jordie Barrett also were named in the squad — midfielder Jordie was included despite spending the last northern season in Ireland with European Champions Cup finalist Leinster.
Savea was voted Super Rugby Player of the Year after he led Moana Pasifika to their best-ever season in the tournament. But Robertson remained loyal to Barrett, with whom he has a strong bond. Barrett wasn't Crusaders' captain when the francise won the Super Rugby title this season for the 13th time.
'Scott's leadership is hugely valued in this group and well complimented by Ardie and Jordie," Robertson said. "They will play a vital role along with the wider player leadership group in supporting the transition of the new players into the environment and imparting their experience to ensure the squad is set up for success.'
The squad, read out by former All Blacks captain and current New Zealand Rugby chairman David Kirk, includes five new caps.

Chiefs hooker Brodie McAlister and prop Ollie Norris, Highlanders lock Fabian Holland, Hurricanes flanker Du'Plessis Kirifi and Highlanders center Timoci Tavatavanawai were all named for the first time.
Holland joins Scott Barrett, Tupou Vaa'i and Patrick Tuipulotu among the secondrowers in the squad. Kirifi, the Hurricanes captain who has been the best jackal among New Zealand teams this season, is included among backrowers with Savea, Samipeni Finau, Wallace Sititi and Luke Jacobson.
Tavatavanawai was picked in the midfield along with Anton Lienert-Brown, Jordie Barrett, Rieko Ioane, Quinn Tupaea and Billy Proctor. Tupaea returns to the All Blacks squad for the first time since 2022 after recovering from a knee injury.,
'For the five uncapped players this is a particularly special day," Robertson said. 'These players have all impressed us with their talent and work ethic and have earned their opportunity to be part of this All Blacks squad. '

Another uncapped player, Crusaders backrower Christian Lio-Willie, has been designated as injury cover for Jacobson while two-test winger Emoni Narawa will cover for Lienert-Brown.
Hooker Asafo Aumua, Ofa Tu'ungafasi, lock Sam Darry, flanker Peter Lakai and utility back Stephen Perofeta were unavailable because of injury.
Beauden Barrett and Damian McKenzie will vie for the No. 10 jersey while Caleb Clarke, Will Jordan, Ruben Love and Sevu Reece will contest places in the back three along with Ioane, who can cover wing.
Robertson will use his full squad in the three tests against France. The All Blacks and France meet at Dunedin on July 5, Wellington on July 12 and Hamilton on July 19,

NRL world all says same thing about Storm after brutal Jahrome Hughes blow
Melbourne Storm fans watched on in horror on Thursday night as reigning Dally M medallist Jahrome Hughes left the field clutching at his shoulder, and supporters are not confident the team can win the NRL comp without the halfback. Hughes left the field early in the second half after diving to his left in an attempted tackle on James Tedesco. Hughes got up from the tackle, but was clutching at his shoulder and left the game immediately. Hughes went straight to the hospital where his shoulder was put back into place. And in good news for the Melbourne Storm, Hughes joined his teammates back in the hotel after his side's gutsy 34-30 win, which keeps their hopes of a minor premiership alive. Harry Grant put on a masterclass when Hughes went off injured and the Storm showed plenty of determination with Cameron Munster and Ryan Papenhuyzen also missing. Although coach Craig Bellamy said the outlook wasn't great for the halfback's recovery. "I don't think it's overly good news," he said after the win. "I think the longer they're out, it's a bigger problem ... it stretches the ligaments and muscles around the joint." Although the severity of Hughes' injury remains to be seen, with reporter Michael Carayannis claiming he should be back this year with the halfback delaying surgery. "Jahrome Hughes returned to the team hotel last night with his shoulder back in place," Carayannis said on SEN Radio on Friday morning. "The Storm are confident there is no structural damage to that shoulder, which indicates they may be able to nurse him through this backend of the year." Carayannis said there are questions around whether Hughes will be pushed to come back before returning and if his shoulder can last the rigours of finals footy. "It's a ticking tome some point, you would assume, he is going to need surgery to repair it," he added. "He might be able to play six games, he might be able to play six early indications are that the Storm have some hope Hughes will be back this year." Jahrome Hughes injury throws Storm's hopes in doubt Bellamy was quick to admit Hughes' injury was a major blow to the team with the New Zealand-born star set for a stint on the sideline. "Obviously no one wants to lose their halfback. He is a massive part of our footy team without a doubt," Bellamy said. "It'll take a bit. We probably won't recover completely, he was the Dally M player last year. However long he is out for, we're going to miss him." Fans were quick to claim Hughes is too important to the side and missing the Dally M halfback will see them drop behind Penrith, the Bulldogs and the Raiders in their quest to win the 2025 NRL premiership. Commentator Andrew Voss claimed Hughes' injury is a significant blow, but the depth of the spine with Grant, Papennhuyzen and Munster means they can still win the competition. And Carayannis agreed. "No Munster, no Papenhuyzen as well. I think they have got enough class to still win the competition, but it will be interesting to see who they put the sort of mix they do in the absence of Jahrome Hughes," Carayannis said. "But I am not going to write them off, despite the fact Jahrome Hughes may not play again." Carayannis was full of praise for Grant who stood up and showed why he is the best No.9 in the competition. He scored a try in the first 40, and carved the Roosters apart with two try assists when Hughes left the field. "We saw Harry Grant really change the game by himself last night. That was the best performance Harry Grant has had in about two seasons. That was a huge performance from him," Carayannis added.

Ineos-Grenadiers staff member David Rozman leaves Tour de France over doping allegation links
COURCHEVEL, France (AP) — Ineos-Grenadiers soigneur David Rozman has left the Tour de France in the wake of media reports linking him to disgraced German doctor Mark Schmidt, the convicted head of an international blood doping ring. Rozman 'has stepped back from race duties and has left the Tour,' Ineos-Grenadiers said in a statement provided to The Associated Press on Thursday, noting that Rozman had received a request from the International Testing Agency (ITA) to attend an interview. It comes following reports alleging Rozman exchanged incriminating text messages with Schmidt back in June 2012. Soigneurs are part of the support team staff, with a focus on the riders' welfare. Schmidt was convicted of treating cyclists and winter-sports athletes with blood doping for years at the culmination of the Operation Aderlass criminal investigation in 2021. Schmidt, who previously worked for the Gerolsteiner cycling team, was accused of violating drug and doping laws in nearly 150 cases from his medical practice in Erfurt, Germany. German broadcaster ARD linked Rozman – without specifically naming him – to Schmidt in a documentary aired last month, when it alleged that a man working for Ineos-Grenadiers had in 2012 exchanged incriminating messages with Schmidt. Journalist Paul Kimmage, a former rider, subsequently named Rozman in a piece he wrote for the Irish Independent newspaper, and other outlets followed suit. Ineos-Grenadiers said Thursday it was aware of the allegations but had not received any evidence nor had it been asked to take part in any inquiry. It said Rozman was informally contacted by an ITA staff member in April 2025 'about alleged historical communications' and Rozman immediately notified the team. 'Although the ITA assured David at the time that he was not under investigation, Ineos promptly commissioned a thorough review by an external law firm,' the team said. 'The team has acted responsibly and with due process, taking the allegations seriously whilst acknowledging that David is a long-standing, dedicated member of the team. Further, both women have been on the Tour's final podium each year since that revival. This season, Vollering has thrived on her new team, winning La Vuelta Femenina as well as several other stage races. She will also have a strong team around her including 2024 fourth-place finisher Évita Muzic and Juliette Labous, both of whom could finish inside the top 10. Meanwhile, Niewiadoma has had a quieter season, but placed third at the Tour de Suisse, her last race before the Tour. Seven UCI Women's ProTeams make up the rest of the peloton, with the two best in the 2024 rankings earning an automatic invite and the rest selected by the Tour's organizers, Amaury Sport Organization (ASO). Each of these teams sends seven riders to the race. The riders vie for four individual classifications during the race, each marked by a specialty jersey. The most aggressive rider of each stage earns the day's combativity prize. The rider judged the most aggressive across the entire race wins the Super Combativity award at the final podium ceremony.
