No news on tenure extension, says Tengku Maimun
PETALING JAYA : Chief Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat said today there has been no updates regarding the extension of her tenure, as well as that of two other judges.
'No news,' Bernama quoted her as saying briefly when asked after the launch of a book, titled 'Law and Practice of Intellectual Property Law in Malaysia', here today.
The other two judges are Court of Appeal president Abang Iskandar Abang Hashim and Federal Court judge Nallini Pathmanathan.
The first woman to serve as the country's top judge, Tengku Maimun is scheduled to go on mandatory retirement on July 1, at the age of 66.
Abang Iskandar is due to retire on July 2, and Nallini will reach the mandatory retirement age on Aug 22.
Under Article 125(1) of the Federal Constitution, Federal Court judges may serve until the age of 66, with the possibility of a six-month extension, subject to the approval of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
On May 20, Tengku Maimun confirmed that she had yet to receive any offer for a six-month extension of her tenure.

KOTA BHARU, July 6 — The presence of dozens of illegal crossings along the Kelantan-Thailand border has raised serious national security concerns, said Kelantan Deputy Menteri Besar Datuk Dr Mohamed Fadzli Hassan. He emphasised that Kelantan's border is an integral part of Malaysia's international boundary with Thailand and must be protected with utmost vigilance. 'The border spans approximately 105 kilometres, with most of it covering Sungai Golok, which separates Kelantan from Thailand's Narathiwat province. 'There are only three official entry points, namely Rantau Panjang, Bukit Bunga and Pengkalan Kubor. However, behind these checkpoints lie dozens of illegal crossings frequently used for cross-border activities,' he said in a statement on his official Facebook page today. Mohamed Fadzli also noted that the region's geography and close familial ties between communities on both sides of the border further heighten its vulnerability to security threats. In light of this, the state government stressed the need to strengthen border enforcement through increased personnel deployment, enhanced security assets and coordinated efforts among all relevant agencies. He added that the state government is fully committed to working together to ensure the nation's borders remain secure. Bangladesh to cooperate fully with Malaysia in GMRB militant group investigation
KUALA LUMPUR, July 6 — Bangladesh has pledged full cooperation to Malaysian authorities following the arrest of 36 Bangladeshi nationals in a recent security operation targeting alleged involvement in the Bangladeshi Radical Militant Group (GMRB). The Bangladesh Foreign Affairs Ministry said that the Bangladesh High Commission in Kuala Lumpur promptly engaged with the relevant Malaysian authorities and formally requested the identities of the individuals as well as information regarding the allegations brought against them. Five of the individuals have been formally charged in Malaysian courts, while the rest are undergoing further investigation or deportation processes, the ministry said in a statement yesterday. "The Bangladesh government is closely monitoring the developments, and the Bangladesh High Commission in Kuala Lumpur is in close communication with the relevant Malaysian authorities and will extend necessary support to the expatriate Bangladeshis wherever needed,' it said. The ministry also reiterated Bangladesh's firm stance against all forms of terrorism, violent extremism, and militancy, reaffirming its commitment to cooperate fully with Malaysian authorities in this regard. Yesterday, Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail reportedly said that police initially detected the group's activities through social media accounts operated by Bangladeshi nationals using Malaysian IP addresses to spread IS ideology. He said a three-phase operation between April and June led to the arrest of 36 Bangladeshi Radical Militant Group (GMRB) members, including their leader, dismantling the group's Johor-based network. — Bernama

Zahid tells Umno members to stop trampling each other, says internal feuds risk party's survival
SEGAMAT, July 6 — UMNO president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has reminded the leadership and members to stay away from the culture of putting each other down which is not beneficial to the party. Comparing the action to 'crabs in a bucket', he said all members should instead work together to strengthen the party's internal security for the survival of the party ahead of the upcoming 16th general election (GE16). 'Don't be like crabs in a bucket... all the crabs want to get out, but step on the others so that they can climb up. 'In the end, not a single one comes out, all die in the bucket. Why are we dying in a bucket because we trampled on each other?,' he said at the closing of the Segamat UMNO Division Delegates Meeting at the Taman Yayasan Multipurpose Hall, here yesterday. Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman, stressed that the culture of pointing fingers and assuming that only one is right will only break the people's confidence in UMNO. 'Any differences of opinion among members must be expressed in a civilised and ethical manner, especially when discussing internal party issues. 'If today we are small leaders, God willing one day we can become big leaders, but if we are rude to others today, when we rise, more people will be rude to us,' he said. Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Deputy Prime Minister, also called on the entire UMNO machinery to remain focused on efforts to strengthen unity among the grassroots and not make differences of opinion a cause for division.
