The wild step Cameron Heyward would take to prevent Steelers from trading T.J. Watt
Cameron Heyward revealed his plan to keep the Steelers from trading T.J. Watt, and it involves storming into general manager Omar Khan's office. The Steelers defensive end said Wednesday, in a tongue-in-cheek way, that if he caught wind that a trade was going to occur that he would go up to the GM and tell him, 'That's not happening.' 'If there's even a trade that gets up there, I don't think it helps our team to trade a guy like that,' Heyward said during an appearance on the 'Rich Eisen Show.' The Steelers' defensive end broke into laughter when Rollins followed up by asking if Heyward had the power to do that. 'No, no, I don't have that power,' he replied. 'I'd be like, guys, we have to have a talk. I don't know if it's even going to work, but I'm gonna throw my hat in the ring and say this cannot happen.' Talks have continued to drag on over a contract extension for Watt, though it's expected he will end up getting a deal that will surpass an annual average value of $40 million. T.J. Getty Images The Steelers also reportedly did their due diligence in inquiring about Watt's trade value. 'Man, that's my brother,' Heyward added. 'I want [Watt] to get paid what he deserves. That dude is one of the most fierce and best players in our league. And he's respected throughout the league. I've had the best time being able to play with him, and I hope this year is not the last time we play together, because that dude, that's my running mate, and we create a lot of havoc together. And I just want to see that guy continue to be a Pittsburgh Steeler, and be a one-helmet guy.' The Steelers are set to kick off training camp on July 24, and the picture should start to become clearer over what will happen with Watt.

Russell Wilson's Leadership With NY Giants Lands Honest Review
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. When the veteran tight end Chris Manhertz played with Russell Wilson for the first time, the national narrative surrounding the veteran quarterback was tanking faster than ever. Once known as a top passer in the game for the Seattle Seahawks, Wilson's Denver Broncos era was throwing dirt on a lot of his accomplishments. The situation simply wasn't ideal for the veteran passer. On March 4, 2024, Wilson was released by the Broncos. During his lone season in Denver, Manhertz appeared in 16 games with the Broncos. He caught two passes for 16 yards. After that, he signed with the New York Giants for the 2024 NFL season. Meanwhile, Russell Wilson picked up a season with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Wilson appeared in 11 games for the Steelers in 2024. He threw for 2,482 yards, 16 touchdowns, and five interceptions. The Steelers accomplished a 6-5 record during that time. Pittsburgh bounced early, and Wilson was back on the free agency market, looking for a new team. It's become clear that Wilson might not have been the Giants' first option. That hasn't left the veteran passer bitter, viewing the situation in a different light. Wilson is embracing his upcoming season with the Giants and making sure his leadership tactics are top-notch. Recently, Manhertz opened up about it to the New York Post. Read More: NFL Writer Places Russell Wilson on NY Giants' Hot Seat "As a player, Russ is as detailed as it gets," Manhertz told the New York Post. "It's kind of contagious to be around him and see how he works and how he carries himself. It's great work, and it's necessary work leading up to training camp. It's all business on the field, and Russ is all business." Wilson earned plenty of praise from coaches and teammates throughout OTAs and minicamp for his performance and leadership. Ahead of training camp, the quarterback helped host many of his teammates, including quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers, and tight ends, out in San Diego to work out and bond before they reach their next phase of full-team preparation. Being that Manhertz was around for New York's three-win run in 2024, he can spot the differences. "I think it feels different this year in a good way," the veteran added. "The leadership is a lot better." So far, all seems well for the Giants' Russell Wilson stint. They will soon have a chance to show if it can all be put together and result in victories. Commanders Land Steelers Star in Blockbuster NFL Mock Trade
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Fresh off making a shocking run to the conference championship, the Washington Commanders have been hard at work upgrading their roster. In a recent mock trade, they make a huge splash to firmly cement themselves as a threat to contend in the NFC. Ahead of training camp, the Commanders are one of a handful of teams dealing with a player holding out for a new deal. While they try to rectify things with wide receiver Terry McLaurin, the Pittsburgh Steelers find themselves in a similar situation. Heading into the final year of his contract, star linebacker TJ Watt is in search of a long-term commitment before the 2025 campaign gets underway. As this standoff between Watt and the Steelers continues, speculation continues to arise of Pittsburgh moving on from the former Defensive Player of the Year. Though this outcome is rather unlikely, Bleacher Report's Brent Sobleski put together a handful of trade packages for the star linebacker. In one scenario, the Commanders part with a first, second, and third-round pick to land Watt in Washington. PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA - JANUARY 10: T.J. Aller/Getty Images Also read: NFL Insider Has Troubling Update on Commanders' Terry McLaurin Situation "The Washington Commanders are in the position any team wants to be in if it's going to make a splash move to improve its roster," Sobleski wrote. "They have a franchise quarterback in place under a rookie contract. Jayden Daniels isn't going to see top-of-the-market money for another five years. This point is exactly when the Commanders need to go all-in and capitalize on that financial advantage. The fact that Washington lacks a true-blue pass-rusher makes a potential move for Watt even more of a necessity." Led by an emerging superstar in Jayden Daniels, the Commanders have the pieces in place to shine on the offensive end. However, if they were able to land a player the caliber of Watt, it would instantly put them in the conversation of Super Bowl contenders this season. His presence would immediately raise the Commanders' floor on defense, and help some address some of the team's glaring weak points. Also read: Commanders Named 'Perfect' Landing Spot For Steelers Standout While acquiring Watt would be a huge addition for the Commanders, they should prioritize dealing with their in-house situations first. McLaurin is a foundational piece to the organization and will be a driving force of their success in 2025. Knowing this, Washington needs to work out a deal with the star wideout so he'll rejoin his teammates in training camp and beyond. Steelers May Have Found Perfect DK Metcalf Partner in Surprise Minicamp Playmaker
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Pittsburgh Steelers are still bringing together their team, as they recently brought in All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey and Pro Bowl tight end Jonnu Smith. Both players will have an immediate impact in their respective positions, but there is still a glaring hole on the team. More news: Jets' Sauce Gardner Doesn't Hold Back About Aaron Rodgers DK Metcalf was brought in to take over as the premier receiver, especially after the Steelers lost George Pickens in free agency. However, there is no clear-cut WR2 that can line up alongside Metcalf. Despite the worry that the Steelers may need to sign another proven veteran, one surprise minicamp and OTA star may be the answer the team is looking for. MoreMore news: Dolphins Receive Concerning Outlook Following Series of Wild Trades A new report on the biggest minicamp surprises from ESPN identifies which players have been making head turns, and the Steelers have a clear favorite. That favorite is upcoming third-year veteran Calvin Austin III. "Since trading George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys, the Steelers are squarely in need of a No. 2 wide receiver to complement DK Metcalf. WR coach Zach Azzanni, though, believes they already have someone in the building to fill that role. "I think that '2' spot is all Calvin's right now," Azzanni said during the Steelers' minicamp. "Selected 86 picks after Pickens in 2022, Austin missed his entire rookie year with an injury but has turned into a steady contributor in each of his last two seasons. Austin was just behind Pickens last season, averaging 15.2 yards per reception, and he hauled in four touchdowns to Pickens' three. Austin still has to build chemistry with quarterback Aaron Rodgers, but he made plays throughout the Steelers' OTAs and minicamp with Mason Rudolph, Skylar Thompson and Will Howard throwing him the football," Brook Pryor writes. Austin was drafted in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft and did not impress in his first season playing in 2023. He secured 180 yards and one touchdown. Austin may have missed the 2022 season due to injury and was trying to make it back in 2023, but he emerged in a big way in 2024. He secured 548 yards and four touchdowns, increasing his production by a significant margin. As Pryor writes, Austin still has to figure out his chemistry with Aaron Rodgers, but he was already making plays with Mason Rudolph, Skylar Thompson, and Will Howard in minicamp and OTAs. Rodgers is a consummate pro, and he might be able to unlock the next level of Austin's game. With Pickens gone, a new receiver needs to emerge as the next best target alongside Metcalf. As it stands right now, Austin can be that target. Austin had the second-most touchdowns on the team in 2024, and he could be the young dynamic playmaker that Rodgers looks for downfield. Ravens Player Grateful Cowboys Deal Didn't Happen
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Baltimore Ravens nearly found themselves in a situation where they had to potentially cut ties with the veteran wide receiver, Rashod Bateman. Before inking a deal with the Baltimore Ravens, Bateman was rumored to be a target for the Dallas Cowboys. Bateman was likely open to making his way to Texas, but at the end of the day, he's thankful to remain in his current situation with the Ravens. "I went through a lot of things with the Cowboys and all of that with my contract," Bateman told The Athletic. "There was a time when I didn't know what was going to happen. (The Cowboys talks) were a thing, for sure. It was a possibility. I don't want to deny that." Rashod Bateman #7 of the Baltimore Ravens celebrates a touchdown during the first quarter against the Pittsburgh Steelers during the AFC Wild Card Playoff at M&T Bank Stadium on January 11, 2025 in Baltimore, Maryland Rashod Bateman #7 of the Baltimore Ravens celebrates a touchdown during the first quarter against the Pittsburgh Steelers during the AFC Wild Card Playoff at M&T Bank Stadium on January 11, 2025 in Baltimore, MarylandBaltimore Ravens General Manager Eric DeCosta kept Bateman in a positive space mentally and ensured he would be taken care of long-term. "DeCosta, he's always making magic work," Bateman added, "and he made it work. And I'm thankful for that." Being in the NFL since 2021, Bateman has played in 51 games across four seasons. When he was a rookie, Bateman caught 46 passes for 515 yards and one touchdown. In year two, Bateman appeared in just six games, catching 15 passes for 285 yards and two scores. Last year, Bateman had his best season yet. The 25-year-old received 72 targets throughout the season. He caught 45 passes, totaling 756 yards in the air. He scored a career-high nine touchdowns. The Cowboys' interest in trading for a standout WR2 was evident back in the spring. Although they were in the market for Bateman, reports suggested that the talks did not go very far. Bateman's perspective tells a slightly different story, as it seems there was some real smoke there, but the Ravens took care of business on their end. Dallas eventually did the same. The Cowboys made a call to the Pittsburgh Steelers, who had George Pickens available on the block. Pickens recently wrapped up his third season with the Steelers. He produced 2,841 yards and 12 touchdowns during his tenure in Pittsburgh. The Steelers agreed to send the veteran wideout, along with a 2027 sixth-round pick, to the Cowboys. Pittsburgh landed a 2027 fifth-round pick in exchange. While the Cowboys attempted to kick the tires on acquiring Bateman, a little patience put them in a position to feel confident about their 24-year-old standout wideout. Clearly, Bateman is thrilled to remain in his position as well. For more Dallas Cowboys and NFL news, head over to Newsweek Sports.
